There is no way that the Golgari deck will focus on Dredge outside of using it as it was intended to be used (A way to bring back a creature per turn). WotC hates the Dredge decks based on filling the yard and winning with Sutured Ghoul/Bridge from Below, so I doubt they are even thinking about making a duel deck (Intended for newbies) like those.

Isn't Rakdos still alive? He was just unconscious.
Rakdos returned to his lava pit, where he was at the beginning of the original Ravnica, he's just napping.

With all you fanboys already drooling, I can tell that there are going to be 4 more of these. And you will all shell out your money. Hand in hand with that goes the fact that there will be no interesting decks for a while since all slots have been filled by said 4 decks.
I highly doubt the next 4 faction vs. faction duel decks will be based on the guilds. This specific duel deck makes sense since we are well, returning to ravnica. They switched the planeswalker and faction duel decks release times (remember, the planeswalker duel deck used to come out in the fall) so that they could do this kind of historical preview for the upcoming block. I'm sure the next fall duel deck will have some connection to "Friends".
EDH is like French fries: some people like waffle cut, crinkle cut, or plain old straight cut, and while there's slight flavor difference and personal preference, at the end of the day they're still fries.
My guess is that the new guildmaster of the Golgari will make an appearance (as a card) in the Golgari deck. It would make sense to have him, if the Izzet deck gets Niv-Mizzet (either as a reprint or a new version). If nothing else, it helps to drive up interest in the release of Return to Ravnica.
Jarad vod Savo, probably with a card name of "Jarad, (insert title here)", will be green and black, and will be a zombie elf. If he has any other types, my guess will be that he's either a shaman or a druid, with shaman being more likely.
Anyway, I'm excited to see what the decklists might contain.
Everyone needs to specify that the things they are saying are simply speculation!
Niv-Mizzet, the Firemind was not spoiled to be released in RTR. Just because he and Jace Beleren were on the announcment picture doesn't mean either of them will be in RVR, at least showing up as a card, that is. Wizards might be creating this duel deck to bring him back up to popularity for the announcement of RTR. It doesn't mean he will be inside it.
Also, I doubt that Niv and Jarad will be planeswalkers. Wizards said they were doing duel decks in this new cycle; planeswalkers, planeswalkers, then regular themes without planeswalkers. If that were the case for this duel deck, they would be breaking the cycle.
As for Jarad, I am really confused about this. There is no Jarad card as we know of, unless they are using new cards for RTR to mix into with the old cards of Ravnica Block. This seems unlikely, but Wizards has been doing some strange things lately. We have had the inclusion of NEW cards for Planechase, so maybe we will see a couple spoilers, including Jarad, from RTR inside this duel deck. If the Golgari deck's leader is not Jarad, I don't know what it would be, and/or why they would talk about him so much in the announcement article if they weren't even going to include him in the deck. Then again, it could be just bad writing for the back, just like someone had already pointed out.
Also, I don't understand why people are freaking out and saying that the guildpact was dissolved. So? This duel deck can still be printed. They printed the Phyrexian vs the Coalition duel decks WAY after that war had happened, so why couldn't the Golgari and the Izzet have a conflict somewhere way back when there were guilds, something they didn't put in the books? After all, they are the authors, the creators, etc etc, if they want to add information we haven't read about, let them. They'll make it work.
Or are they really trying to say that this duel deck reflects a conflict in the future, where the guildpact was readmissioned, or maybe that the guilds are secretly still working without the guildpact? That would give us a selling point for the next set, for sure.
On to my next point. I seriously doubt that Tarmogoyf, Dork Confident, or the lands will make an appearance in this deck. That seems like a very strange way to give them out, and I think with cards like that, they'd rather introduce them in a special reprint set or reprint them in standard again.
As for the decks themselves; I'm worried after seeing the last duel decks: venser vs koth, however I have hope for them, as always. These were two, if the THE two, of my favorite guilds of Ravnica, and I would be sad if they botched them up as bad as Venser vs Koth. Actually, even if the decks were just varied versions of Golgari Deathcreep and Izzet Gizmometry, they would likely still be better than Venser vs Koth. I do hope that they keep the themes of both, though. Draw and Burn vs Graveyard shenanigans like dredge would be a fun match up. Dredge is fun, no matter what people say. Burning and Drawing will always be fun, too.
So, in conclusion, we really have no idea what these decks will be like, and if they have anything to do with RTR aside from being set on the same plane. They might not contain any new cards, nor might they reflect any themes from RTR. However, it's fun to speculate. We can only hope for the best.
I need to see more before I get excited about this.
We already have precons for both guilds and I'm guessing these will look very similar to the ones we have, strategy-wise, and maybe some overlap in the card lists. It's what the guilds do..kinda hard to have them not be rehashes of the originals right?
It's cool and all..I guess I just don't see a huge reason to celebrate over these apart from the generic 'Yay, Ravnica's coming back!'
(On second thought...maybe that's enough. :D)
This name drop of a Jarad is pretty interesting to say the least. While I could see them putting Niv-Mizzet in as the (promoted) mythic card of the deck, I have trouble seeing them give us a brand new mythic from an unreleased set. While previous duel decks have showcased cards from the upcoming set (Elspeth vs. Tezz had Kemba's Skyguard and Contagion Clasp), it's one thing to "preview" a common in a release and another to "preview" a mythic.
As for Shocklands, while they make perfect sense to reprint in this, I've got a feeling they won't be. WotC has made it pretty clear they want these products to be for the casual, and putting shocklands in there, even as a 1 of for each, would instantly drive up the secondary market price of these, as well as keep them out of the hands of the average Joe player.
This is sick. They´re finally giving us what we want! Everybody loves ravnica, and everybody likes the the golgari (trolololol).
Bringing back ravnica will make lots of people happy hopefully, and make wizards alot of $$ (ding ding ding). this is like their BEST chance to redeem theirselves for every mistake EVER in the past... even though we wont stop buying the cards guys
Overall, crossing my fingers!

In all likelihood, we're not getting the 'annual' preview mythic in From the Vault: Realms this year, so there's a chance they've put it here instead.
I teach in a middle school and recently found a group of students playing Magic during lunch. They think their drama teacher is the COOLEST for playing magic, btw.
When I looked at their decks, I saw they were playing these 75 card monstrosities, adapted versions of Ajani vs Nicol Bolas with some M12, INN and DKA mixed in. I sort of realized that the duel decks, while we often scoff at their mixed bag of power levels and tournament playable cards, are a really great entry point for newer players.
These guys would totally love Izzet vs Golgari regardless of whatever important dredge or shocklands wind up inside. And that's great for the health of the game! Not every player is as advanced (lol) as we see at FNM.
Does anyone else think that Niv's mouth doesn't look particularly Dragon-ish or even reptilian.
Looks more feline to me.
But maybe I'm just seeing cats.

Whenever you would do something now, instead do it whenever.
I think there is zero chance of Dark Confidant showing up in this. It's 30-50. Basically double the price of the deck in one card. That's not taking account Niv Mizzet who is probably going to be in it (unless that art is just referencing him but that's not likely).
Breaking news.
There will be no Tibalt, Tamiyo, Tezzeret, Garruk, Chandra, Liliana, mini-Jace, big-Jace, Garruk again, or Sarkhan in Theros either.
There will also be no Black Lotus.

I would say that he will be Elf Zombie Wizard, since Zombie Wizard is how most Liches are typed. Dralnu, Lich Lord of Unx... not Phylactery Lich, curiously. Perhaps PL is using a phylactery bought through TV shop instead of inventing a reanimating spell on his own?
O man! Hearing Jarod and reading through the thread made me feel nostalgic for all Ravnica trilogy. I miss those books.
OT though I haven't particularly enjoyed the faction vs. decks. I heard Elves/Goblins was alright. Divine/Demonic wasn't great imo and I heard Knights/Dragons was pretty goofy too. At least with this, WotC has a blueprint of the guilds (pre-cons!!!) and can make nice balanced deck to duel with. I'm not expecting awesome Jace/Chandra cardplay, but this does sound exciting! Can't wait to see a decklist and see the mythics!

Dude, your sig is the biggest, most tedious eye sore that this board has produced in some time.

On topic: Golgari Cave Troll would be a fun card to see in here, also a great great ramp up for the Return to Ravinca release.
I hate having to wait so long for the deck lists now.
For some reason, I expect these decks to be less Replicate/Dredge-centered than people may expect. Partially because we already have precons for that, but also because RTR is probably going to have brand-new mechanics instead (or together with) the old ones. Not like it's impossible to make a Golgari deck without Dredge.
I remember seeing Niv-Mizzet in Troll and Toad's junk rare bin (2 for $1) at the 2010 Toronto Grand Prix and passing because, as a complete newb, I had no idea what I'd do with him despite his cool art, flavor, and abilities.
I'm very happy to be able to pick up a foil with some pretty great alt art for ~$20. More and more I'm seeing terrific work from Mr. Velinov, and I'm glad Wizards agrees. Add in the Golgari Legend, and the actual deck contents (plus other alt art cards) will be bonuses for me. I will literally expect nothing from the decks themselves.
Does anyone else think that Niv's mouth doesn't look particularly Dragon-ish or even reptilian.

I can totally see the resemblance, but he still looks reptilian to me. Kinda like a bearded dragon.
It's can't be Savra, or the Gorgon's since Szadek killed Savra and Savra killed the Gorgon's! I wonder if they will make it Jarad in the Return to Ravinca! I'm excited as all hell since Jarad and Fonn were my favourite characters! Feather you also better be in the set, screw Razia!

Nice stuff.
I don't have a Niv in paper magic yet, so this seems like a good idea to pick one up.
I agree that putting in the shocklands would have been very nice, but realistically, that's not going to happen for this price. Maybe it they added $10 on top of the price, but then it would defeat the intended purpose of inviting the newer players to Magic with decent decks.
I think they chose the right guilds for this, Izzet and Golgari are both popular.
Hopefully Jared will be a preview card from RTR, with an additonal card for Izzet.
The fact that these most likely will not be Planeswalkers is also good for Commander. If I were Wizards I'd definately put in an insert about Commander to introduce new players to this awesome format.
