1 we have no idea how fast this format is the only real fast deck left intact is zombies as of now and maybe WG humans but thats not nearly as fast, 2. hes a better divination...U verse 2U and sorcery speed...yeah. 3. If you draw 4 cards of this guy your heavily ahead remember sphinx...you needed to answer it in 1 turn or you almost always lost the game how is this much different. 4. He is a complete utility creature which suggests being used in control decks verse aggro.
by worse sorcery divination, i mean you have to wait till next turn to get it. i know the ability is instant speed. and comparing this to something like a finisher sphinx is just silly, for one one card is much more killable and two sphinx went into a completely different deck.
this guy is just pure win moar. you shouldn't be trying to run away with the game at 5 mana, you should be killing them. the fact that it does nothing right away for 5 is huge, and even when it gets to do something, i still wouldn't want to have paid 5 mana for that kind of effect.
should have had an "and" just after the second semicolon, gg wp
Actually, in that sentence I used the semicolons to separate independent clauses, so the semicolons themselves worked as conjunctions. Having an "and" after the second semicolon would have actually been redundant.

hey guys, can you stop arguing about english grammar and talk about the new card? i think he's a bomb in limited. discard your dead spells and divination every turn.
ok lets talk about how often you can expect to open him in limited then? What rares beyond shocks arent good for you in limited?
For the record, I really dont care to use proper english when posting from a phone or from work. I dont mind a fantasy game making up words, but I dont see why chemister makes any more sense than chemist here. I believe it is a failed "rule of cool", and I didnt realize a chemister which I've never heard of in any shape or form before is now suddenly part of a steampunk vibe. I think you missed the point when you went on your proper english rant, and the english itself isnt a proper noun, it is capitalized because it is derived from a proper noun. I will admit I learned something today because of your post, however I also dont really care because of the infrequency of my usage of that word in written form.
tl;dr: I honestly feel you were attempting to troll, and I disagree with the reasons you posted as to why they used it.

Alright, I apologize. Criticizing your grammar on an internet forum was, indeed, rather rude (not to mention stupid) of me. I just found it amusing that you claimed making up a word was improper English, and then went around and had a few grammatical errors. But that does not change that what I did was in fact trolling, intentional or not.
As for the name of the card, yes, while "chemister" does appear to be a word made up specifically for the card, and does not in fact have any root that I know of in actual steampunk lore, let's face it: in a fantasy setting, particularly one which makes liberal use of magic, mundane scientists are considered boring. Hence, scientists are given names - made-up or otherwise - that sound more fantastical, such as alchemists, biomancers, or mechanists. "Chemister" is an example of this, and I personally think that as a word it evokes steampunk vibes (for the record, "mechanist" is another word which I think sounds "steampunk-y"). You are, however, free to disagree. I personally think it's a really cool name, and it is just one of the many things I love about this card.
Back to the card itself, I will agree that, as a Rare, its usefulness as a Limited bomb is... well, limited. It doesn't help that it is such a high mana investment, so unless there are reliable ways to protect it and/or give it haste, it won't be seeing too much Standard play either. I think it'll shine brightest in EDH, but unfortunately, like so many Izzet cards, it simply paints a gigantic bullseye on your head in multiplayer. That said, I simply adore this card, and the fact that it may not be Constructed viable just makes it easier for folks like me to get a couple of copies

I was thinking Thunderous Wrath would be excellent in a deck with this guy. Notice you can use his draw ability EOT to cast miracles and it negates some of the drawback of having one stuck in your hand at 6cmc
This is one of my favorite card arts ever. The look on his face... it's hilarious and perfect. And he sort of looks like John Cleese.
Don't know if the card will see play since it's tough for a 5CMC creature without ETB effects to make it (to be fair, these abilities are possibly worth it...), but god damn, I love that art so much.
Would be way too powerful if you could emerakul to the face for a few mana.
Nothing's stopping you from setting up and doing that now with Erratic Explosion.

Legendary Creature – Human Designer (MR)
Brian Tinsman, Set Designer can only be cast during the third set of a block.
When Brian Tinsman, Set Designer enters the battlefield, ignore all flavor and mechanics of the first two sets in the block. "Ok so what do we have here... gothic horror? Scrap it. Expand the Devine Vs. Demonic duel deck to 244 cards and print it!"
2/2
sure, but that requires setting up your deck or luck.
And this card (with the "or target player" revision) plus emerakul makes you set up your hand or draw it. Either way, getting what you need where you need it isn't too tough. Hell, an Erratic ExplosionDraco 'combo' deck was one of my first ever magic decks.

much easier with this card, we simply need to get the card into our hands. however, if you want the target player, which most excessive cards like emrakul will, you need stuffy doll(at least for standard). maybe make a combo deck with this, large dudes, and stuffy doll with side plan of reanimating the dudes. problem is that deck kinda falls apart without this guy discarding though.
so the new way to say discard costs are good is "combos with miracle"?
Chemister's discard is directly related to the CMC of the card you are pitching, much like Spellbound Dragon. Being able to take advantage of the high cmc of miracles when they are in your opening 7 or the 2nd or third card you draw for the turn is big. I also mentioned how his first ability has synergy with miracles because he enables them at the end of your opponents turn. Good day Sir.
More like you could kill an Emrakul with a WWurm!
