Axebane Guardian ... hmmm. Overgrown Battlement saw play. This costs +1, has -1 toughness, and produces any color mana, not just green. The 2G might kill it as far as constructed play.
Wow. Loving it. Multi-colour decks will be a cinch. A defender sub-theme akin to Rise. May have to get a 2nd box. And I will be drafting this set like a crazy person.

Rakdos gets the short end of the mechanic stick again; Overload looks like it might be interested, but it seems pretty limited, Populate is amazing, and Scavenge is pretty darn great and sync very VERY well with the old Simic mechanic.

Brian Tinsman, Set Designer :?mana::snow::snow:
Legendary Creature – Human Designer (MR)
Brian Tinsman, Set Designer can only be cast during the third set of a block.
When Brian Tinsman, Set Designer enters the battlefield, ignore all flavor and mechanics of the first two sets in the block. "Ok so what do we have here... gothic horror? Scrap it. Expand the Devine Vs. Demonic duel deck to 244 cards and print it!"

The mechanics should be pretty interesting. I love overload; populate and detain could be a lot of fun too. The rest are a bit more meh as far as I'm concerned.
Hopefully they don't force too much to interact with 'gate' lands, but I like the potential that it has.
Think people will actually tutor up the common duals with gatecreeper vine? It doesn't get shocklands.
In Sealed and Draft environments this is VERY relevant. It allows Selesnya to splash Golgari cards and vice versa. It's definitely a solid fixer. Not constructed playable, though ... Elvish Visionary is just better.

What? Elvish Visionary is not a good comparison to Gatecreeper Vine. A better comparison is Borderland Ranger, and this guy loses two power to be 1 mana cheaper AND be able to get a dual land if you want. I love this card to death and I think it has the legs to be Constructed-viable. With this guy and the Joiner Adept mana rock, the manabase for a 4-5c control deck is solidifying: all it needs are the cards you want to play 4-5 colors for.

Asking out a girl is like trying to cast a first turn Necropotence. Sometimes the other player will have the Force of Will to say no. You shouldn't let that stop you from trying it.
No, that's what I understand, but it's also something that signet-like mana fixing could've achieved.
What makes you think that the signets are not in this set? I think They are.
Also, Signets have a different function than the Gates. Although They both mana fix, Signets will create a faster mana curve while the Gates will have a drawback of being slower.
However, the gates will have the advantage of being "fetchable" and harder to destroy, general speaking. Also, They are attached to a sub-theme that will make them more desirable.

Well, the original Ravnica had signets and karoos, and Shards of Alara had both borderposts and panoramas. You need a lot of fixing in a set that's 50% multicolour, and I wouldn't be surprised to see another cycle of signet-like mana fixing.

The name of the next set, "Gatecrash", suddenly has meaning. Cool. I wonder about the story implications of the Gates. Also, Pauper and Limited environments are going to love these lands. There's a good bit of strategy involved with them, and they lead to more exciting and complex midrange games.
Detain is natural and flavorful as a mechanic. It's probably my favorite other than Populate.

Just beat to posting this. This has the possibility of shaking up pauper a fair bit, as with these they may make multicolor decks more viable.
Also, to the person freaking out about no signets, nowhere in the article that I read did it say there would be no mana rocks/signets. As was mentioned previously, the original ravnica had common lands too.

We know there's an anti-guild group who call themselves the Gateless, so Gates are a symbol of the guilds and their regime. The implication would be that there will be more civil unrest and resistance against the reformed guilds as the block progresses.
That, and you know what they say. If Wizards started shipping $100 bills in boosters tomorrow, people would scream and cry and whine that they were folded the wrong way.
We might actually see a life gain card at constructed level now... when was the last time that happened?
The fact that Heroes' Reunion is a reprint -- and, to my knowledge, didn't make any big splash last time around -- suggests that it is not, in fact, constructed level.
(Last time there was in fact constructed-level life gain would be Martyr of Sands, I think. It certainly was, and I can't think of a more recent one, but it's possible there was one and I'm just missing it.)

Does the Soul Sisters deck count? That was more an abuse of lifegain triggers to make huge creatures, but it still counts I think.
Rest for the Weary was played when it was Standard legal, though not a ton.
We have some other interesting lifegain cards presently so I could see someone trying to make a deck out of it. Not sure how good it would be as you still have to kill or deck an opponent..

Reunion, not return. It's a reprint, and a disappointing one at that.

I don't think Rest for the Weary saw any serious play when it was in standard, though it does seem some play in modern.
