My theory is still that the Simic created the Ravnica Merfolk via genetic mutation while we were away from the plane. Makes sense, and doesn't ruin the story.

Anything that happens "while we were away" that is a major plotpoint absolutely does ruin the story. It's impossible to become invested in a story you missed half of.

How, exactly? We've been gone for hundreds of years. I'm sure we'll be caught up on what's happened since then when we start getting more information on the story.

Because it is bad storytelling to have to explain the past instead of showing what happens. Show not tell is how storytelling works.

Well, they're obviously going to show us what happened via the cards. The issue, of course, is that being gone so long, stuff has obviously happened. I mean, did you want everything on Ravnica to stay EXACTLY the way it was at the end of Dissension until our return?
Even with our return to Mirrodin, stuff had happened. The Phyrexians had already started making their move, new characters were already around, etc.
It's not "immaterial" , as you say. It is very important. It influences a lot of the background. Why were they hiding? Where were they hiding? Why come out now? Etcetera, etcetera.
I give up. You're right, we shouldn't speculate that Kiora is involved with the Merfolk on Ravnica in any way, because she can't carry other beings with her between planes, even though the Merfolk were probably on Ravnica all along. Yep makes sense.
I just wanna have the Rav Merfolk as Simic experiments, and now the inmates run the asylum. But that is more that I like the whole science experiments run amok, like Experimental Kraj.

Maybe I should start adding tags to my posts.
I was, for the sake of argument, going along with the supposition that there were merfolk on Ravnica all along. If we were going to assume that that was the case, the things I mentioned before are very important to their story.

[I was permabanned and all I got to show for it was .... well, nothing.]
How, pray tell? Neowalkers CANNOT take others with them across the planes. Not one, let alone entire populations. Of course, they CANNOT do such a thing for as long as it doesn't get in the way of merfolk getting shoehorned in.
Niv-Mizzet can "planeswalk" without a spark, I'm sure he could move a population eventually if he so desired. But why would he? Hmmm...
If the merfolk were "in hiding" one could guess that they'll be aligned with the Dimir colors--hiding in the darkest, least desirable places like sewers, etc. UB merfolk would be pretty sweet, Sygg, River Cutthroat was always a favorite of mine. Just shootin' the stuff here.

That only matters to a small (but vocal) percentage of the Magic community though. A lot of players who weren't around for the first go at Ravnica won't even ask why/ how/ where. A lot of people who WERE around simply won't care.
It's not something I like, since I'm an avid storyline-monger. It's something I've come to realize though.

Considering that Ravnica has both Rivers, Lakes, and Oceans (in addition to very spacious sewers) and is a rather large plane from what we know, it is not unreasonable to assume that the plane is home to several types of creatures we did not know of previously, merfolk included.
Also, from what we can see from the newly revealed artwork (apparently showing the various guild leaders), at least some of the Ravnican merfolk are associated with the Simic guild.

I don't disagree, however I find it interesting that they may have gone from being unassuming citizens that few others took note of to rebuilding and taking charge of the Simic. It would be an interesting story in my opinion, but likely one that will remain untold.
My point was basically that many people don't care much for the Magic storyline, so answers to these thing might not be forthcoming.

MaRo actually said they are going to explain why we have merfolk on Ravnica. probably in the articles we have on daily mtg during prerelease week that talks about the fluff.

If sparks can be transferred then can they be stolen as well?
I've always wondered this. I would assume a walker can forcibly steal another's spark and potentially even contain it. Would make a great character, a walker who steals the sparks of other walkers.
Too bad about the premium deck series. I liked those. I wanted a White Weenie or Counterspell deck. Oh well.

I just want people who redraft to admit this:
"I can't draft objectively unless I am able to guarantee that I receive at least 3 rares. I am also better than most average/new players so I want to make sure that I get the best rares and they end up with worse ones. I care more about the monetary value of cards than actually playing the game for decent prizes."

Add another 100 years since the mending to post-Avacyn.
Actually the Alara storyline, where Ajani becomes a planeswalker and later defeats Bolas, takes place 300-400 years after the mending. It why people got pissed when Vesner got a card since storyline wise he should have been dead of old age being that neowalkers arent immortal.

That one is easily explained. Venser knows Teferi and Jhoria, and thus may have access to "slow-water", which slows down aging to a crawl.

Lol...nice callback to heros.
Seriously, Niv-Mizzet steals Jace's spark.
Unlikely because even Memnarch and Yawgmoth couldn't really do it and while Niv is smarter than them, they had time.

Niv-Mizzet probably has a dozen machines and hundreds of prototypes he can't wait to test on Jace.
