Glad I could clear it up then. I saw a lot of people asking that, and was like umm.... states it right there heh. Well now that mystery is solved for ya. Super card, and I am looking forward to its release.
Gogogo mono-Red Phoenix! Maybe this will make Kuldotha Phoenix, which saw a lot of play in Block, viable along w/ Chandra's. Seems good w/ Runecaster Pike too.
Remember Inkmoth can be an artifact by tapping itself!
It's an instant speed 5/5 trampler for 4. Wtf do you people want seriously? It has applications in populate/ above the curve beats decks, or in Bant control/ flash. I seriously think anyone mad at this card for any reason other than losing an attacker to instant speed wurm, should go home and make their own awesome card game and leave the rest of us alone.
Definitely a strong card. I am on the "No" side when it comes to this card in legacy dredge, though. You wanna know how many times I've been to three mana in dredge? Four, out of I don't know how many games I've played with it. I guess it could work in LED dredge, but LED dredge is just worse than normal dredge. Making a change to an inferior deck (that doesn't break the deck in half) doesn't really strike me as anything great.
Is this a sign that R&D is shifting looting into red?
It's a sign the very fact that they have done so.
Red is the one color that would not loot! Arg! Thinking! Why don't these designers do more of it!
Red already has Wheel of Fortune. Riffs on that are fine. A card that means going out, finding more ideas, more resources, and using the resources at your disposal to derive them... that represents recombining ideas. That is artifice and transmutation in a way that no mechanic involving permanents ever has (and I think -could-) be captured. That represents thought in the purest sense. Looting is the icon of Blue. Draw to discard is more fundamentally Blue than drawing itself.
There are scarcely more obviously true rock-bottom components of pie design than loots for blue and burn for red.

Why do you think there can only be one interpretation of this mechanic? It's ridiculously abstracted, there's no artifice, there's no transmutation, there's no recombining ideas. There's just drawing and discarding cards. Thinking. How much have you done of it? Red's looting is, of course, quite different in flavour. What does red care about? It cares about the here and now, it's doesn't care what it throws away that might be useful later if its in the pursuit of something that's useful now. I can see you've got your heart set on this blue view of looting but please try to forget it for a moment to ask yourself if drawing and discarding really doesn't represent this very red ideal too?

I would consider Divination far more representative of blue than Careful Study. Blue would far rather accumulate knowledge whenever possible than prune away options that could be useful in the future. It will do so, since increased quality of options is still something it wants, but it certainly isn't the color's icon.
Red can loot because it is a color that lives in the moment, seeking what is most useful for it right now and tossing aside what it doesn't find most immediately appealing. I don't see how the act of adjusting your options to match the immediate situation is something un-red. Red isn't stupid, at least, it doesn't have to be. It's short-sighted, but it can act with cunning and intelligence within that moment, to fulfill its goals as directed by one's motivations at the time.
I dunno. For me it boils down to Blue usually gets cards like Mental Misstep and Flashfreeze, while Red gets cards like Gut Shot and Combust. Quite yer so and so folks. A crumb dribbled off the high and mighty table of Blue and fell to the sad rabble (myself included) that likes Red.
Red's had this effect before and the world didn't end. See Control of the Court and Goblin Lore. This is just a slightly more playable version of those becuase you don't have to random discard.
In fact, if it's DA it's legal for PTQ season on Modern - and its presence actually allows several decks that would be unplayable to not only be playable, but potentially be extremely efficient.
Considering that Innistrad leans more into Vorthos than anything else, this card is designed well in flavor. Not only does it matches well with the hell flavor of some cards from the Innistrad set, this cards hints what is going on in Dark Ascension. This card pretty much is supposed to reflect that many humans of this plane have lost their faith in Avacyn and her church. In life outside this game, lootings are very common when something big is going on (protests against a regime, after a major disaster has occurred, etc). As for actual playability, I'm beginning to understand why the Modern has its current form. Wizards was aware that red would get cards that would enable combos and some form of Dredge that would have killed Modern in its infancy.
Too good to be real... :/
Btw, Card Quality > Card Advantage. Also, you can discard flashback spells. There will be some like Ancient Grudge on which the fb cost is actually cheaper than the casting cost, I think.

I don't think he's saying that, let's just call it "abduction" (as in, logical abduction), is the only flavor justification for the looting mechanic. It's the other way around: that looting is the only mechanic that can represent abduction. Which seems like a really weird method for assigning mechanics to colors, I agree, but it is valid.
Clearly FAKE. The art is taken from the cover of the magazine, and the resolution is way too low for the standard card quality these days. Don't get your hopes up, chaps.
It's a mockup. The res is always that trashy on mockups. Also been confirmed by twitter.
God if this card is real, people dont realise how incredibly strong it really is. Worst case scenario it is a 2 deep red filter with buyback, best case scenario it draws you 2 cards for 1 cmc and you can buyback it for 3 cmc.
The Grixis deck that is currently run at worlds is going to abuse the living daylight out of this card.
Welcome to the new std brainstorm.

People haven't even been thinking of it's applications in non-standard formats. Modern Splintertwin is just loving the hell out of this card, as is the U/R Delver tempo list in both standard and modern.
Now will WotC actually COMMIT to a much-needed change in red's color pie, or will they chicken out and just let this be a one-shot?

you can generally tell the easiest road to victory by how many players congregate on it; and the road of counterspells/control has been the freeway of choice in magic for quite some time.

What I find offensive is not that Wizards is endeavoring to make the game more accessible, but the attitudes of elitists who act as though no one of any age should show their face in the Magic public without first having mastery over the complexities of the game.
I admit I didn't read the link at first either, but it says very clearly that this spoiler is legit:
IDW Publishing and Wizards of the Coast have been working together for a while with the Dungeons and Dragons comic, and now with the Magic: The Gathering comic series. One of the hooks with the Magic: The Gathering comic is an exclusive card for use with the upcoming Magic: The Gathering – Dark Ascension set.
The companies sent Major Spoilers the first look at the exclusive playable card.
I am going to do my best to break this card or break something with this card. Before Splinter Twin and possibly Past in Flames, when was the last time you could say red got something breakable? Blazing Shoal in Modern doesn't count, lol

Burning Vengeance is an annoying deck to play against. It's absolutely non-interactive. I thought WotC was trying to steer clear of things like that.
I *hope* this is fake...but I won't be surprised if it isn't.
It's a promo for the comic. If you do your own search then you wouldn't have to be skeptical as this is the second in the series of the comic cards. No it's not fake based on what you have stated as your reasoning.

But theirs also this draw 3 discard 3 random card ; might be something to consider a more red version.
