The last thing I want is Patrick Chapin showing up to my FNM, because guess who's gonna get first?
let's be honest... if big MTG stars like Kibler and Chapin just rocked up at your store - you're not going to complain about them winning (and if they do, it's because they are skillful and put a lot of time into the game)...
no, what you'll be thinking is "omg, it's Patrick Chapin!"
plus, what better way to get the pros involved on a grassroots level? it's a great move. noobs and veterans to the game can always learn something new and big time pro players are the ones to teach it.

The new UI seems sleeker, more intuitive and more newbie freindly than the old one, perhaps this will encourage more people to get involved with the DCI and playing in organized tournaments

I like this. It might really jolt me back in to competitive play.
Anybody who is still for the old system must be delusional. It sucked hardcore. This new system makes trade-offs, but it seems balanced overall to accommodate the needs of different levels of competitiveness.
Asking out a girl is like trying to cast a first turn Necropotence. Sometimes the other player will have the Force of Will to say no. You shouldn't let that stop you from trying it.
Also, Pro Tour Qualifers are no longer a "win the blue envelope" type scenario? So I could win the PTQ, and still not go to the Pro Tour if someone has higher points than me for the season?
Uhhh....I have a life, a family, and a job. Winning the blue envelope was the only chance I had at going to a Pro Tour. There's no way I can accumulate enough points (via a combination of winning and grinding) to get that sort of shot now.
I'm pretty sure winning the PTQ won't change. I think they were referring to people who get invited based on what were Pro Points/Qualifier Points etc.
This seems insane. Pretty happy about it overall, though I'm sure for the first part of 2012 some people who T16 a GP and don't necessarily get a PT invite are going to be kinda frustrated. Still, it seems necessary and will most likely have an extremely positive impact on the game.
Cool, but this doesn't really affect me too much. I've honestly never checked rating, nor do I care to. Well, actually, I tried just now, but there's a smudge covering the first half of my activation code, but I don't care enough to do anything about it. That said, if I had to guess how many points I have, I'd say no more than 20 or so.

Not gonna lie, this kind of scares me. I think it's a good system, but there's an immediate problem that pops out at me. Granted, I'm halfway through the article, but my first thought is, sometimes, players sitting on their rating is a good thing. The last thing I want is Patrick Chapin showing up to my FNM, because guess who's gonna get first? They're pro's for a reason; by sitting out the less competitive events, they actually give other plays a chance to move up the ladder.
Not sayin' Chapin's gonna be showing up to FNMs any time soon, but you get my point.
I sorta disagree here. The pros sit out the FNM events because their decks, while great, sometimes totally break down to some guy's goofy jank deck. They tune their decks to beat other top decks.
I compare it to what I used to call the Street Fighter syndrome (or really any other fighting game). I wouldn't mind playing against someone that knew their character well. I could predict what they would do. That lunatic that is just slapping buttons madly? He has a good chance to get some solid hits on me because not only do I not know what he's going to do, he doesn't either
It won't happen with alarming frequency, but it will happen. We'll hear a slight increase of "who the hell plays THAT card?" at FNM's as the people that were protecting their rank now come out and play.
Also, as the article mentioned, maybe it'll get some of these higher ranked players out there and actually representing the game at a local level, helping teach some strategy to the less experienced players.
What do we really get out of it except a better chance to get byes ?
Will I get free cards for being an *anytitle* ?
I don't see the point for people not interested in byes and such.
Seeing as this is simply replacing the DCI rating system and not the player rewards system, if someone didn't care about byes and such before then they won't care about this either.
I don't think there's any difference in the blue envelope side of things. The only difference is that the T16 of any given GP were auto-invited to the next PT, and now they aren't (although they'll almost always have enough points from going something like 10-2-1 at an 8x event).

^ This 1000 times! I have a friend that had a really high limited rating. He didn't like playing in limited events outside of PTQs and such. Now he doesn't have to care because he can play in whatever limited event he likes!
I think this was a great move by WoTC and now players can easily compare themselves with each other.
Also no one's going to lose their way all the way to level 50. Let's get serious here. If you're attending that many events, you're bound to learn something. Heck I know more about magic and the format I play than I did a couple of weeks ago. We're always learning new things. A player thats level 50, is not going to be a bad player.
Also for starting a new DCI number when I got into college being an Invoker ain't bad. Level 31.
I don't actually care about the rating system since I don't want byes or invites, but this change is absolutely abysmal. The best thing about the rating system is that it tries to compare the skill levels of players. This system doesn't even try.
However, I understand why they did it.
I hope they will consider implementing a true rating system as well. They don't actually have to use it for anything like determining byes if they don't want to.

Not really too excited about this. I liked trying to improve at the game and see that reflected in my rating.
Now the "ratings" just reflect how much you play.

anyways could someone tell what level do you have to be to get byes at gp's and get invites to the pro tour?
Nah, its not bugged. Its just getting hammered. They basically DDOS'd themselves.
