Casual events award players only for participation, not for match results. You are awarded a fixed number of points, at least 1 point for each event. Attending sanctioned casual events—or asking your store to sanction the casual games you're already playing—is a great way to build up your Lifetime total. There's no reason not to get your event sanctioned, even if it's just you and your buddies hanging around your local store playing Commander.
Points from casual events count toward your Lifetime total exclusively.
you can sanction your own casual games? that's awesome!
i think wizards are truly moving this game forward. genuinely stirring stuff, i have to say.

Totally called my rating of Invoker before I found out how many I had. I R SIKICK.
It's an interesting idea, but I really want to see what else they're going to do with it. Solving the "squatter" problem was the main thing, the way I see it. People should be encouraged to play, not maintain their immaculate 2100+ rating out of fear of a loss.
This is pretty exciting! I used to arrange non-rated events for the local pros/semi-pros who wanted to sit on their rating, now those will definitely be rated events
Not gonna lie, this kind of scares me. I think it's a good system, but there's an immediate problem that pops out at me. Granted, I'm halfway through the article, but my first thought is, sometimes, players sitting on their rating is a good thing. The last thing I want is Patrick Chapin showing up to my FNM, because guess who's gonna get first? They're pro's for a reason; by sitting out the less competitive events, they actually give other plays a chance to move up the ladder.
Not sayin' Chapin's gonna be showing up to FNMs any time soon, but you get my point.
This is awesome. I might actually give a darn about the rating system now that I can actually track how it works (maybe, I might still just not care).
Starting at Level 33 ain't bad either.

Into the Maw of Hell is a name so awesome, it deserves its own song.
It would be about a world of brown spikes and red fire, where men fight and scream and become blurry masses. Then it would change to somber, we learn that this glorious place exists only in Raymond Swanland's head. To visit it, you must enter the maw of Hell itself.
This seems like an interesting new thing. I like the general idea and, more importantly, the new points site is a significant improvement on the old DCI website.

Points awarded are multiplied depending on the event. You get a lot more points for winning at a GP than at FNM, for example.
Player A does 2 drafts a week, averages 5-1 in matches.
Player B does 7 drafts a week, averages 6-15 in matches.
Player B will have a better rating than Player A. Doesn't make sense to me. The old system had flaws but I don't see how this one does a better job at all of assessing the overall skill of players. Quantity =/= quality.
Here's an idea of some of the point gains, quoting my own:
FNM - 33 and 36 were the highest I saw.
QT (PTQ?) - had a 50 in here, and I did bad.
Prerelease - 14 was the highest I saw, and that from the ones I had only one match loss in (stupid 3rd place! ;))

as far as i can tell, it solves the problems of the previous system and adds a few new improvements as well....

Nothing, I have just gotten back after a long hiatus, and am just now starting to rebuild my collection.
exactly, no more having to "sit" on your rating to protect a GP bye.
how is this a bad thing again?

not strictly true.
before, you could lose points, discouraging people from playing unless they were at sanctioned events (known qualities with predictable metagames).
now, they are encouraging the big guns to sling cards with grassroots players. this is excellent.
