I like this theory more then mine of "liliana will get a 2.0 in innistrad, and WotC finally decided to do something nice for black mages in the way of Planeswalkers by actually giving us 2 to use at the same time".
I don't really play black but I was hoping for a new awesome Sorin for you guys, similar to Koth for red guys like me. I am sorry about that. Hopefully your dream of a sweet Liliana in Innistrad becomes a reality.
As a reasonably experienced player with a limited budget and a passion for recruiting new players, I feel like this will be a great product, similar to the Deckbuilder's Toolkit. Let's say someone is watching me play a game with a friend and wants to learn to play. I agree to split the Battle Pack with him (note: I use the male pronoun, but I have no objection to teaching females to play) and we play a few games while he learns both deckbuilding and play skills. Then I give him the deck he tuned out of the two boosters and he has a start, which can be easily added to with another booster, or seriously improved should he buy a Deckbuilder's Toolkit. I also think this is generally a good way to get new cards if you're playing on the precon competitiveness level, which many of my friends are. Plus, as the others have said, it helps introduce new players to the concept of limited (AKA building and adapting a deck with an extremely small cardpool), which can be a daunting transition. I fully support products like this!
The **** are you talking about do you even have any idea how Wizard's development works?
They have several different teams working at once whether on the next set, next product or whatever project is needed to be done. There would be one team working on the next introductory product concurrently with the team working on the next set concurrently with the team working on the next PDS concurrently with the next Summer Multiplayer product, etc, etc etc.
As for whether this product will succeed? i don't know in fact no one here knows. And as I refer to my sig, none of us here are new players just getting into Magic so of course this doesn't appeal to us. But I guess this is just another symptom of the Greater Internet ****wad Syndrome.
I dont get what you quoted me for or what part of what you quoted you think was wrong, but I stand by my opinion. I know that they have different teams working on different projects. That doesnt make my statement anymore correct or wrong when I said that this took up development time. After all, someone at Wizards had to come up with this idea, someone else gave it the go ahead for exploration, then the idea had to be processed, the semi-random decks had to be put together, artist were hired to put together the display and package art, etc... this ate up some chunk, however small or large, of wizards development budget that I still wish could have been invested elsewhere.
As I said at the end of my post, if anyone doesnt agree with that and really is looking forward to this product then Im glad for them that its coming out. I fully respect the thought and opinions of others just as Im entitled to mine. What part of that you felt necessary to comment on and question if I know anything about how their products are developed.... well I have no idea what you were trying to get at, honestly.
Duel Decks, From the Vault, Commander, Archenemy, Planeschase, even the toolkits for new players are all pretty cool ideas. So sorry if that offended anyone when I said Id rather see more products like these given more love and effection and focus from wizards rather than things like this and the planewalker decks. Every dime spent on these, could have been better invested elsewhere-- but again, just my opinion... and im sure to some of you, it stinks.
I have to agree with those who see this as just another random product, this time under the guise of 'introducing' players to Limited. How are these any different from the phase when the expansion set precons were 40 cards and included a booster to 'amp up' the deck? Those had many one-offs to simulate limited and with 40 cards to boot.
I don't see how this introduces players to limited at all. Best way to do it would be to tell them to buy 4 packs of M12 and do a 4 pack sealed. It's really tough to learn limited with a friend who also knows nothing about limited. Split a booster box with 7 of your friends and you can have your own 4-pack sealed practice tourney. There's nothing in these booster battle packs that represent a real limited situation at all. Maybe like League-lite (when will they return to MTGO?!?!?! Gahhhh).
Some people will buy them and get value out of them, but I don't see this product lasting past this iteration.

Had to do a 4-packs sealed when you don't even know what is good in sealed. Seriously, card evaluation, curve, BREAD and so on are unknow concepts for beginners.
And premade 20-card decks with a booster to add the obvious colors that match your deck cards is a good way to teach a format that is anything but premade or fixed with obvious choices? I would be interested on how these products do promote learning limited formats. I wouldn't mind being wrong here, so please educate us on how this product helps new players with anything you just mentioned.

If they really wanted to give us a new product AND help people learn how to draft, they could have issued a gold bordered Cube set. At least non-noobs might want to pick that up, and it would actualy teach people how to draft. Not to mention that its already a popular format, and would see replay-- allowing a new player to get several games in of practice compared to this play it and done after a game or two product.
honestly... I would pick this up as a something different to do before tourneys... it seems like a really fun way to play random limitedesque games pretty cheaply, and it lets you play around with cards you normally wouldn't play.

Seems like a reasonably fun way to have some quick, and cheap, 2-player limited. Regular winston or winchester draft is a 3 pack investment per person, thats 24$ total. This costs less than half of that.
I Pre ordered a box, at around 7$ a pack. That pays for the two boosters and I get extra cards as well (maybe a rare!?). 7$ for shipping. Seems like a decent deal to me, plus opening them and playing them is gonna be the fun part. I get tired of playing against my own decks, plus this will give my wife a small intro into deck building ishh..
This is actually a good product for my wife and I. She likes to do sealed but it can be expensive to have to buy 4 or 6 packs apiece. Can't really draft as we're 2 people. This could work out well for us.

There are a few two player draft formats. Their quality is debatable, I've found most of them enjoyable. Try searching for "Winston" or "Winchester" drafts.

"In the beginning, MTG Salvation switched to a new forum format.
This has made a lot of people very angry and been widely regarded as a bad move."
It was at that moment that I realized: I'm kinda just making these things up. We can just write the rules the way we want them to work. People will have fun, and people will get it.
I think that some of the 'side products' WotC has put forth have been sketchy, but, this one is actually fine. It helps people understand Limited a bit more, and the cost really isn't prohibitive. You're effectively paying 2 dollars for some extra commons/uncommons. They might even be worth the cost, who knows.
I for one am appalled that a company would market its merchandise in diverse ways in an attempt to make a profit. This is a blatant cash cow; it's almost as though Wizards is trying to make more money.
But what really bothers me is that there are less-informed players than myself who might purchase this product. We've got to be careful; people could accidentally have fun!
I know!!! We must make sure to protect our fellow magic followers do not have a fun time playing a slower limited game when they get bored! If we dont, wizards might (gasp) profit from this and gain the ability to expand the magic product in new ways they didn't have the time or resources for! And god forbid we get new players so they the game can continue to thrive and produce a new block every year! THIS IS TERRIBLE! okay but seriously if your not buying it what do all you people care. Jeez if i get a new way to pass the time inbetween rounds and new players get an introduction to limited how does that harm other magic players? wizards can print as many contrevertial ways of marketing their cards as they want, either way its not making magic any worse. my only complaint is the name. booster battle packs? do yo know how many kids are gonna be made fun of for buying somthing with a name like that. anyways im done ranting. if your not gonna buy it, dont complain.
From Magiccards.info: 5/1/2007: Contraption is a new artifact type. There are currently no artifacts with this type. And there's no current game meaning of "assemble."
and besides, arent 2 mtg packs about $10 anyway? id consider this extra basic lands and a few commons and uncommons to give to my little cousins who are slowly learning, and for what? $2 extra bucks TOPS?seems cool to me...

Packs of M12 are $3 in my store. So it's an extra $4 dollars here. Considering you can get a box of M12 for $90, $2.50 a pack is about how much a pack is worth. This is fine for a new player that can make use of uncommons and commons and isn't going to be buying many packs, but if you do so much as draft or live in a place with commons boxes there are better options.

Packs are only worth 2.50 when you are buying them by the box, though. On an individual basis, I sincerely doubt that you are only paying $2.99 per pack.

Some stores do sell certain boosters or less or more then MRSP. Of course this means they might lower the price on the Booster Battle Packs
I have thought of a cool way play with these. In order to play you will need 4 players and 2 of this product. Here is how it will work
1. each player randomly picks one of the 20 card decks.
2. Then you booster draft the 4 boosters
3 Constuct 40 card decks
4 have a 2 round tournament.
4 Winner does not pay for pizza.
You could also do 2 head giant or 4 player free for all.

My LGS sells packs at 2.49 individually, but they're an online store as well, so I know this isn't commonplace.
Coolstuff by me sells packs for $2.50 but they are the cheapest. Usually I find packs from $3.50 to $4 at other card shops and Wal*Mart. So, this is sort of worth it. They're nice, not too bad.
So at my FLGS boosters come out to $4 with tax ($3.68). For an extra buck we get a '20 randomized-cards' deck? This definitely seems like a great way to pass time if you and your buddy have $5 to blow.
Nice idea, but it's not too useful for teaching and nothing an experienced player would care about. I don't see much market for this. Once a person learns to play, they pick up limited fairly fast from sealed deck pre-releases and releases.
I don't really play black but I was hoping for a new awesome Sorin for you guys, similar to Koth for red guys like me. I am sorry about that. Hopefully your dream of a sweet Liliana in Innistrad becomes a reality.
