Pack Wars...Nothing but Crack Wars...Those crazy pack wars...please let them stay.
Man I seriously pull mythics 70% of the time or more in pack wars, though my store also prize supports it with 1 pack so that helps. I think I like pack wars better than this because I like it to be TOTALLY randomized, not partially with only 2 colors. Interesting concept though.
Yes, because these decks are totally going to be sold on the strength of some absurdly valuable powerhouse cards contained within. These things are completely comparable to the SFM event deck in their target market.
Hey, when you want to ditch the ignorance and sarcasm and talk like an adult, let me know ok?
Seeing as I've worked in this business for about 10 years, I think I know a little more about the attitude of store owners than you do.

Honestly, I can't see these being very much fun for deck building due to the tiny amount of cards. I don't see how limited is a daunting format; the rules are pretty easy to explain in 30 seconds or less, and the element of deck building feels easier for me when I have a larger variety to choose from. Also, the general limited experience of sitting with and playing against different people can't really be reproduced.
But I suppose someone will buy this. I don't think it's a good limited simulator, but it will probably provide some fun for a few people who are scared of signing up at a LGS with all its smelly clients.
okay to all you guys that think this is terrible wizards are always trying to introduce to new players the extrememly complicated game of magic. they produced products all the time for more seasoned players but to people who don't know how to play this can be a good thing. i played for about 3 years back when i was like 12 and i never knew how to play nor did i have money to buy more cards. i had 250 cards grand total and it would've been much easier to spend my money that i spent on 2 planar chaos packs on this so at least me and my friend could play. this is a good way to teach new players whether people here think so are not. everyone who's complaining just don't buy it.

1) The sarcasm comes from disrespect for the conclusion you've come to, not the experience that brought you to it or you as a person. I do apologize, however, for not framing my response more constructively.
2) You don't know me or my involvement in the industry or with people who are themselves heavily involved in the industry. While you are correct in that I have not worked in the business as long as you claim to, I have worked in the industry and, when not actively working in the industry I've been active in the hobby with a good deal of communication with store owners in my area.
3) Store owners bought large chunks of the SFM event deck because Stoneforge Mystic was a valuable card and the deck packed two of them. This meant that they were a high-demand product and an opportunity for store owners to clean house. These booster battle packs are a more like a two-player Tournament Pack aimed at offering yet another jumping-on point for new players, and thanks to their semi-randomized contents they never would have been the high-demand SFM was to begin with. They aren't any more comparable to each other than the SFM event deck and the Deckbuilder's Toolkit are.
4) Any store owner that orders this product in large quantities has a mistake on their hands because this is meant to be a handy thing to put in front of someone who never played but has friends that do (friends that might have left Standard but now are excited about it again and might want to get some friends into the game and up to speed in time to start drafting Innistrad to build up enough cards to build a Standard deck of their own) or played DotP or otherwise heard about it and wants a taste. It's meant to be the cheap first hit of cardboard crack that gets new players hooked. It won't be a fast mover. But any store owner that orders less of this than they were going to as a result of the SFM banning is cutting off their nose to spite their face.
I for one am appalled that a company would market its merchandise in diverse ways in an attempt to make a profit. This is a blatant cash cow; it's almost as though Wizards is trying to make more money.
But what really bothers me is that there are less-informed players than myself who might purchase this product. We've got to be careful; people could accidentally have fun!
The price is right considering a good chunk of those "semi-random" decks will have to be basic lands to make this work. It's a cute step up from pack wars. I know my wife and I will be trying these out for sure and it will be a great deckbuilding exercise for her so she can get a little closer to drafting without being intimidated by the whole thing.
Cut out any more uncivil or insulting comments towards one another. It's borderline at the moment and I don't want it to progress to the point of infractions.

This is my plan for them. Just recently got my wife into playing a bit of casual magic at home with some decks I threw together, similar to the common/uncommon starter decks, and this product would let me do some more teaching/introduction type play in a different format, I know I will grab one or two for sure. Plus 10 bucks for a bunch of m12 cards is find by me.

I wish this were slightly shorter so I could make it my signature. It has always amazed me how little some people on this forum can step outside of themselves and think about what someone that hasn't been playing the game obsessively for years would want.
Anyways, I like this idea. If you split this with a friend, it's a much better deal than buying packs. If you're of the pack-buying type, why not experiment with this?
This is a fine experiment, certainly a much better product than the DoTP decks, or Foil Scars packs.
At the end of the day, it is MSRP of 2 Boosters ~8 bucks +2 dollars for the extra cards. (which will likely be commons and a few uncommons)
This isn't the best idea WoTC has ever had, but it certainly isn't the worst either.
If you don't like it, don't buy it. It isn't for everyone. It doesn't take away from anything else, it doesn't hurt anything by existing.
I agree with the guy youre talking about, actually. This really is just another cash grab product from wizards, and is another in their long list of bad ideas. The real effect of this product is that it probably wont help anyone into the game. New players are better off buying one of the duel decks to learn to play (that was a pretty decent idea, with fairly playable decks ready to go right out of the box).... this is just bad.
While you can argue that this is aimed at introducing people to limited, not necessarily new players--- chances are if you know how to play youll be able to figure out limited on your own without the need for this product.
And for the record, this does effect existing players... It took manpower to come up with this turd that could have been spent coming up with decent products instead. Id much rather have had the development team on this concept working on another archenemy or another commander deck series than this......... or, if this was their best idea, maybe Im glad they didnt.
In any case, if you think this is a cool idea-- thats fine by me. Everyone is entitled to their opinion and Im glad that at least some people out there will enjoy this. I dont know what everyones gaming community is like, and in some places this thing might take off like mad... but around here, I can see this sitting next to the planewalker decks that have yet to sell for months/years to come.

The **** are you talking about do you even have any idea how Wizard's development works?
They have several different teams working at once whether on the next set, next product or whatever project is needed to be done. There would be one team working on the next introductory product concurrently with the team working on the next set concurrently with the team working on the next PDS concurrently with the next Summer Multiplayer product, etc, etc etc.
As for whether this product will succeed? i don't know in fact no one here knows. And as I refer to my sig, none of us here are new players just getting into Magic so of course this doesn't appeal to us. But I guess this is just another symptom of the Greater Internet ****wad Syndrome.

Everyone calm down, these Booster Battle Packs (and the other so-called "cash cows") WotC has been releasing are a good thing; Hasbro wants WotC to be more profitable, and instead of releasing 5 sets a year, and causing complete chaos in the constructed formats, they're finding interesting ways to sell the same products. It's either WotC keeps releasing these kinds of products, that for some reason enrages people, or you guys all start spending more money directly on WotC product, don't buy singles, buy boxes, lots of boxes. Face it, Magic isn't a very profitable business unless you aren't WotC, if all we have to "put up with" are these casual-oriented specialty products, then I say let them come.
These seem like a good way to get people into limited, helping them learn more about the trials and tribulations of constructing a deck with a very limited card pool, if only there were some way to teach them how to draft.
this to me is a complete waste of money... It's not a cash cow if no one buys it btw....
Sounds ok. You want to draft but only have 2 peeps.
Just to confirm it's $10 for 40 cards + 2 packs right? IE $5 each player. Crack it, Best 3 of 5. Cheeper than going to a movie.

Out of the blackness and stench of the engulfing swamp emerged a shimmering figure. Only the splattered armor and ichor-stained sword hinted at the unfathomable evil the knight had just laid waste.
Drafting makes WotC TONS of money, but drafting is intimidating to new players because they feel they'll just get murdered out of the gates and lose their entry fee. Swiss Draft was introduced to take some of the edge off, but it required a time investment of about 3 hours and 7 other players. This product IS a limited format and can teach players the basics of Limited play without the daunting challenge of facing off against "Draft-Sharks" and a minimal time investment. Technically the players for this new product are still paying a 2 dollar entry fee, but it's disguised by WotC providing 40 near worthless cards. This makes everyone feel better about it.
I like it. My friend and I would always draft boosters to play against each other, though I was the much better player. He usually plays just because he knows how much I love Magic. This would be a great thing for the both of us, as it gives you each a deck to play and a way to add cards. Should be fun. I know I'll be picking up some when I meet up with him again. I think it's a great idea.
And let's be honest. The majority of people who check this site for spoilers and the such, well, this is not for them. This is for the true casual player that picks up a pack here and there and just wants to play with friends.

This product is a Gateway Drug to Drafting.
But does choosing 5 cards from the 4-7 cards in your colors in a single pack really teach you much about drafting?
It depends on how the semi-random decks are set up, I think. It can help teach you certain common draft archetypes. I do wonder how much deck-building experience you get from the booster, considering the lack of choices you'll get when all you have to choose from are the cards in two colors plus an artifact or nonbasic from time to time.
It depends on how the semi-random decks are set up, I think.
How so? You don't make any choices based on what's in those decks.
Unless you're talking about something like using something like Rampant Growth in a green semi-random to splash a third color using the basic land in your booster.
