At first I was like 'oh man a from the vaults set about legends, awesome.' The first legend was Teferi, and I thought it looked pretty balling. Then they said a bunch of Alara's legends were in it and I was like 'alright, not bad, they're pretty good, but I sure hope there's an alt art Captain Sisay, or some awesome Portal: Three Kingdoms legends in it.' No Xiahou Dun, no Hua Tuo, and Sisay has the same art. (I have an invasion foil.) Earns a solid 'meh, might just get singles' from me.
What the hell? No Alt art for any of the other cards? just the Alara cards getting a makeover? this is BS, and really, Omnath? Omnath?! It couldn't have been Rofellos?

Visara has an alternate art...
EDIT: As a Human collector, I'm very pleased that I could get this at MSRP, I guess I can sell or trade at good value the other cards...
Then you might be interested in the hi-res art. (From Rigney's dA page.)
I'd tap that.

To not get hit with OMG SPAM INFRACTION trigger happiness: I've never been impressed with the selections in these FTV sets. This one even less so. This is the Knights vs. Dragons of FTV.
Honestly none of the artwork to me is really that much better, Teferi and Visara both had really good artwork to begin with.
Honestly the black border 3k would be the really interesting cards which means buying the separate and not the whole thing.

Don't you see that the whole aim of Moderators is to narrow the range of thought? In the end we shall make infractions literally impossible, because there will be no words in which to express it. Every concept that can ever be needed, will be expressed by exactly one word, with its meaning rigidly defined and all its subsidiary meanings rubbed out and forgotten.
If I wasn't interested when they spoiled the Alara legends, I'm certainly not interested now. None of the new art makes this worth it...FTV : Alara. Most of these legends are already easily accessible to everyone (except the portal ones). The card selection just seems bad in general and the price spike just doesn't help. I think the portal legends were a nice addition since they're super rare and people seem to want them but this set has done nothing to spark any of my interest.
More new art on old legends? That might have been better than new art Alara legends. Not to mention the new art on the Alara legends is really meh.
I don't have any hard numbers on this, but I'm targeted more often than a black guy driving a beat-up sedan with a broken tail-light and no license plate, and Cy's well aware of that.
A lot of these cards will see play in MODERN Magic Format so I think you could resell most of this stuff and make a little profit in the form of keeping 1-2 of the cards from this vault.
I would have loved to seen the p3k cards get some new art - either that or captain sissy - I don't really like her but shes an older card an fairly iconic. I was really really disappointed when I saw Xiahou Dun wouldn't be in the set - he's one of my favorites from the Chinese epic romance on the three kingdoms and would have loved to make a deck around him. Would have been awesome to have him and Cao Cao In the same set could make a wei based commander deck. I love Sun Quan and would be glad to have in some of my decks.
Personally I think Oona, Vishra, Kiki, Sun Quan, and Cao Cao are fine. I think Doran and Captain Sissay Belong in the set too but should have gotten new art - especially for Doran as there is allready a better full art option compared to this to those who can afford it. I have zero opinion on Teferi. The Mikeaus was going to be in the set whether we like it or not so can't really argue with it. I think there should have been only one Alara card and it shouldn't have had the new art wasted on it - nonetheless four of them getting new arts. And I personally think Omnath and Ulamog shouldn't be in there at all - there too recent.
Okay. After only a few hours work, I've compiled a list of legends that make FAR more sense than that piece of crap resting at the top of the thread. Seriously, only THREE pre-Modern cards? Over half available in Extended? This set blows.
Anyway, I graded my picks on the EDH factor, their wow-factor, their relevance to storylines (not easy for the P3K ones, as I haven't read the Romance yet), their popularity, etc., and took points off for recent printings and how specific they were with special qualities (e.g. no Atogatog). Leaving a slot open for an obligatory preview card for fall, my picks are:
Certainly could use some fine-tuning, but I feel it certainly captures a lot more of what people were expecting: all-stars from all over Magic, a bone thrown to several major storylines and sets that haven't captured much respect in their own right, characters people enjoyed the presence and/or power of in the day, and I did this without rehashing recent cards or violating the Reserve List. Heck, I even came up with several that are actually on the list anyway. Stand to learn something, WotC.
About any "subpar" mechanics or cards: Context is king.
If I make a templating or grammar error, let me know.
The franchise MtG most resembles is Battlestar Galactica. Why? Its players exist in, at most, a dozen different models at any given point in time, with perhaps up to 3% variation, 5% if you're lucky.
wow, I'm crushed Sisay didn't get new art. Personally I think the only ones that looks better than the original are Visara and Tiferi (and that ones almost the same)
My god, I would never be caught playing with that Kresh or Kiki-Jiki, and I want both of them over the others in the set (the others I lack at least). And this is coming from someone who has Col. Sanders (yes, KFC) over the art of my Sliver Overlord I got at my 1st draft. (does that make me old?)

The Kiki-Jiki has actually kinda grown on me but I don't think it's an improvement over the original.
I do like the new Teferi a lot. Visara, I didn't really have a problem with the old art b/c I generally like Kev Walker. The new one certainly is creepier though. I may have to pick these two up.
I prefer original Rafiq & Sharuum is just too similar to the original to matter.
This was such an easy set to put together (since, you know, most legends that weren't put out very recently are on the reserved list) and yet, somehow they still blew it.
Here's how it should have went down
Start with 1 of each color:
{B}Xiahou Dun, the One-Eyed
{U}Empress Galina
{G}Kamahl, Fist of Krosa
{R}Diaochan, Artful Beauty
{W}Mageta, the Lion
Hey, look. None of them have had new frames. Each of them makes a good general. Brilliant.
Let's get the 5-color one out of the way:
{W}{U}{B}{R}{G}Karona, False God
Some 2-color ones for fun commander action:
{W}{G}Captain Sisay
{W}{U}Hanna, Ship's Navigator
{B}{R}Tsabo Tavoc
{U}{G}Experiment Kraj
And some nice 3-color ones:
{B}{U}{R}Crosis, the Purger
{W}{U}{G}Rubinia Soulsinger
{W}{U}{B}Dakkon Blackblade
{R}{G}{B}Sek'Kuar, Deathkeeper
That's 14 and the last spot for the Lunarch. Only 2 of these have had new frames (Kraj and Sek'Kuar), and none of them have had a recent reprint.
Ok, I just preordered this for MRSP. Do I still get a bargain for that price or is it still a rip-off?
MSRP is probly where you will see this set sit at after the initial hype of EDH players grabbing up their share. Progenitus is played outside of EDH so that will at least have some value. Kiki might see something if a Modern deck tries to mess around with a splintertwin style deck. Doran well... unless he is a new art won't really be sought after, but if he is new then he may have a small value tagged to him. In the end 35$ for a FTV in general will be worth it if you hold onto it as something is bound to catch and find value, but at release I am going to ignore it. If you like it then how could MSRP be a rip-off? Enjoy it for what it is.
Actually, I am just getting it to sell it for profit in a few years time. I still have my FTV relics sitting on my shelves (unopened of course).
Given the negative reactions on these boards, I am starting to wonder about the actual value of this pack.
Heh. I feel like you ask this question with every box set release.
I wouldn't worry about it. Look at the first Duel Deck - there was nothing really special in it, and yet the price is now pushing $100 and out of stock at SCG. Collectors will collect, and they will want this stuff 5 years later.

And contrary to the tone here, there are a lot of very popular EDH generals in the set. If EDH keeps up its popularity these "new" generals will be the "older" generals in a few years.
- With the printing of Omen Machine and Knowledge Pool, Teferi is getting to be one of the more popular and strong MonoBlue Generals.
- Kiki-Jiki is probably the most powerful MonRed General.
- Rafiq is a great Voltron General and his ability is unique.
- Progenitus is... well, Progenitus.
- Oona is one of the two most popular UB Generals that I have seen.
- As more Legends get printed in Green/White and as long as Wizards keeps giving Green steroidal shots in the arm, Captain Sisay will be quite popular.
I know that the set could have been made different but still... In a few years these will still be sought after even if it's for 2-3 cards in the set.
