It is very funny to read this thread after reading his and see we hit on the token idea (double sided) with a regular card (normal back) realtively early. Too bad mechanically they couldn't do this...
I really agree with him - I think the cards will feel right when you play with them.
Most, but not all, of my speculation turned out wrong. I don't mind being wrong, but I sure do hate the direction WotC decided to go. Whether or not the double sided cards turn out fun, for now it has really killed my interest in the set. I was stoked about it before the revelation.
I don't get this. How did the reveal of a subset of the cards, about 20 out of the 264 completely kill the interest you had in a set you were stoked about 5 minutes prior to the announcement of this mechanic?
If you don't like the transformers, why not enjoy the other cards? Innistrad seems full of one-faced goodies as well.

Some kind of witty comment should be here.
I'm sure you can think of something by yourself.
I think the U/R flip will see some tournament play in a Swords-based deck like Caw is now. Even if you don't grab an equipment for him, it's still CA and a large beater.
Completely stand corrected on the double-sided gameplay card. That being said I absolutely don't *like* the gameplay card being doublesided - I'd have preferred to see that role fulfilled by some sort of token or proxy.
I think they could be fun - in terms of the transformation mechanic itself - card issues aside. I guess I'll have to read the article about the mechanics and how and why they made the choices they did.
wait, so some werewolves can be in day mode and others can be in night mode?? ....weird.
I dont mind the flippiness, thats pretty nifty. I think that day and night should be the same mode on all cards that care about it, no? I mean this is probably the best they could do i guess, just seems really weird to me and not flavorfly accurate
PS glad i waited and didnt post anything about the speculation. Cant be right or wrong in the end if you just wait a few days to see how it turns out. (I wonder if it will work out that way for agnostics in the end too? hmmm) ;P jk

I invision a future where one is not mighty when he can silence a crowd with brutality,
but when he leaves them speechless with wisdom.

Well, it only takes one transformation for all of the werewolves to share the same day/night side. So it shouldn't be weird for too long.
You can think of it as he hasn't been bitten yet cause he was just summoned.
But if opponent turns your Mayor back into a human, then all your Werewolves will also turn back into humans -- so the bonus from Mayor will actually still apply. Mayor is clearly meant primarily as a Werewolf lord, since he can boost them no matter what. And with the typing being as it is, even freshly played Werewolves, still in their Day form, have the Werewolf subtype and will get the boost.
And there's also one little point -- the human forms of the Werewolves will probably be generally weaker, but maybe not that much. They will have different abilities. Daybreak Ranger and Nightfall Predator can both kill creatures. I believe that the secret of successful Werewolf deck is to NOT rely on the transformations, but instead to make full use of your creatures in whatever form they have.
This is what I've been telling people around where I am. You don't try to make a good wolf deck or a good human deck you embrace the werewolf flavor and make a good deck that is both
I actually wouldn't be surprised if there were NO legendary transform cards, since when to apply the legend rule could be very murky. So it could just be that practically, it couldn't work. Garruk gets a pass because you can't have two cards that have the subtype Garruk.
In terms of pure flavor, though, i feel that it probably would be legendary elsewhere.
I think it'll be possible of they augment other rule slightly which they might do considering they've been talking about it recently. I want there to be one just because I'm the werewolf guy in my group.
You get something to help showcase the set. This does it well, without giving out a really expensive card.
I suppose that's true, but wizards "Doesn't care about the secondary market."
Using Garruk as the prerelease card would have been a phenomenal choice on their part; it showcases the new mechanic and has the player draw of an iconic character card.
Sorry for deviating from the topic - just my $0.02.

But a legendary Werewolf card would just be delightful. Alas though, it doesn't look like we'll be getting any legendary flip cards this set given the revealed flip card checklist proxy.
Maybe next time I suppose.

Brian Tinsman, Set Designer :?mana::snow::snow:
Legendary Creature – Human Designer (MR)
Brian Tinsman, Set Designer can only be cast during the third set of a block.
When Brian Tinsman, Set Designer enters the battlefield, ignore all flavor and mechanics of the first two sets in the block. "Ok so what do we have here... gothic horror? Scrap it. Expand the Devine Vs. Demonic duel deck to 244 cards and print it!"

They said each tribe would get a mythic, but they never said we would get a legend. It would have been nice, but their are enough hits against wolves already, so I'm kinda glad the best werewolf won't die to illusion, which is going to be a really good deck. I want wolves to be competitive, and (selfishly so) over the top good.
A four mana walker with +2 put a 2/2 green wolf token in the battlefield, would make my day. Alas, their is no reason we won't get a legend. Unless it's already been confirmed. Maybe I will start playing edh after all. I love werewolves.
P.s. Need more wolves.

As was mentioned before, there's a little flavor problem with double-sided Legends -- since the names are different, you could have both sides on the battlefield at once.
In Kamigawa this wasn't such a problem since the only cards where both sides were Legendary were the Saviors cycle which transformed into enchantments, but if you could have a day and night form of the same legendary Werewolf together, it would be weird.
On the other hand, there's no such problem with Garruk, since planeswalker rules are different and will NOT allow both sides on the battlefield at once.
Just curious why is the Mayor not a Legend card? Is there more than 1 current mayor in the town of Avabruck?
There's several good reasons that this guy isn't legendary, the first and most important of which is the double faced legend debacle. Secondly, "lords" like this aren't usually legendary, just look at any other lord in the past. That ties into the third reason, which is sometimes Wizards makes a card not legendary simply so that it doesn't suck. IE the same reason Valakut, the Molten Pinnacle wasn't legendary, even though for every flavor reason is should've been. They want your warewolf deck to be able to comfortably run 4 lords like every other tribal deck can.
Using Garruk as the prerelease card would have been a phenomenal choice on their part; it showcases the new mechanic and has the player draw of an iconic character card.

That'd probably hurt pack sales, with there only being two planeswalkers in this set. Don't get me wrong, I would've loved this too, but I can see why they didn't do that.
What I'm curious about is why they aren't giving away the mythic werewolf instead. Bothers me a bit that they've downgraded the rarity for pre-release promos, and I hope it doesn't become a trend.
