This is a really cool spell. I think people are underestimating it. If you have 7 mana open on turn 7 and draw this, you play it and it is like connecting with a Baneslayer Angel twice.
I seem to remember a 7 mana spell that also won the game.
I know the power discrepancy is there. Granted. Point being, resolving a 7 mana sorcery in constructed is not unforeseeable, because it's happened before. Whereas that card was the jtms of sorceries (incremental value and variable, consistently-strong abilities), this is the nicol bolas of sorceries (something dumb for something costly, do it now, DO IT NAO!)

Had semenulative upkeep before it was fashionable. Look what you forced me to do, Wizards! IT DIDN'T HAVE TO GO DOWN LIKE THIS!

Like I said, I can only go by my own experience, which is now 18 years. Kind of disheartening when you think you know something and you find out that you're a notch below a low grade moron.

Right, except you can play Baneslayer on turn 4-5, swing twice by turn 7-8, and keep swinging. All for 5 mana 4 turns ago.
Am I the only one that thinks the mana cost isn't too high? Everyone's saying that if you're paying 7 mana for something, it should win the game...well half the time, that could be true with this card. I'm not saying that it will see competitive play but I think it's actually fairly costed for the impact it has on the game. 20 point life swings aren't anything to dismiss, especially for that cost.

Which just so happens would be turn 7...................
Except now you've had 2 turns to disrupt your opponent AFTER the threat has beend laid.
I will never play this card in a single deck I own, ever.
However, I want several copies of this card because that art is so incredibly badass. The use of perspective, the shading, everything about it is excellent in my opinion.
Love the flavor text too. Just watch, some idiot is going to pack this and Chandra the Firebrand into a deck, go to a tournament and it will be absolutely hilarious and worth it if he can hit even one opponent with it.
It is a cycle. It consists of Gideon's Avenger, Jace's Archivist, this card, Chandra's Phoenix, and Garruk's Horde.
It's true, but this card interacts with Sorin's second ability, while the others interact with their pw's first... It's odd that Sorin's card is bounded in a way so different than the others...

The Father of Machines will free these creatures from the shackles of their imperfect flesh. All glory to Phyrexia!
I guess I am in a very small minority because I think this card is awesome. I am not saying that it is a tournament worthy card and I really don't care. I just want to kill my friends with this in combination with Sorin and Chandra3. If that makes me a bad friend so be it.
In summation.....Star Trek wins a prolonged naval battle against superior, yet less technologically advanced, numbers, with Picard leading the assault, while Kirk takes your soul by laying out Solo and probably his manservant Chewy as well, before impregnating and ditching your Princess.
I love that it works better with new chandra than sorin...
Its strength is going to depend on the shape of standard though. If games are typically going to turn 7 I could see it being used as a finisher, as ironically that's the kind of environment where sorin would also probably see play. It would have to be a meta where creatures are thoroughly hated on, games are won through spells, and counters carry a huge liability.

Why does everyone want to splash red for Chandra 3.0 when SORIN HIMSELF works just as well with this card? Better in some cases. I know he's more expensive, but yikes. BBB in a BR deck can be rough, not to mention totally unnecessary.

play with new chandra for the lulz
Fair point. Then again, if I draw Baneslayer turn 7 then I have to wait until turn 9, assuming no removal or flying blockers, to get the same effect.
Baneslayer is a far better card, of course. I'm just saying that, objectively, this card does a lot for it's cost, even if the cost is high.
I think you got 'nath'd somewhere around page 2. It's still funny though.
Play (verb): Cast/Play

Not too mention Baneslayer can block.
Thanks to Heroes of the Plane Studios for the amazing sig.

As is you might have Sorin out and not be able to play this card thanks to it's bad mana placement

Sig and Avatar drawn by me.
It's a cycle of rare Planeswalker's (insert name) cards
Chandra's Phoenix
Jace's Archivist
Gideon's Avenger
Garruk's Horde
and now, Sorin's Vengeance.

Level 2 Judge
turn 2 swamp, sphere of the suns
turn 3 swamp, obliterator
turn 4 swamp, sphere of the suns, Chandra the firebrand
turn 5 swamp Sorin's Vengeance -- Chandra reverberate.
