awesome. just awesome. Finally, they are breaking this archaic view of "can't reprint the old cards." Sticking it to collectors each year, and I love it. Your time has come.
On price hiking: I don't know where you guys have been going to get your MSRP copies of precons like these, because all of my local WalMarts, Targets, etc. have been sold out due to players buying dozens at a time. :| I was lucky to get an Elspeth v Tezz at all, let alone anywhere near MSRP.
Depends on where you live and how big your city is. If you're a "1-Target Town" then yes, you have everyone rushing to Target AAP to get them. In a large city you've got a Target AND a WalMart in every suburb, not to mention other shops that carry them, as well as random toy and hobby shops.

To be fair, it's more like "Can't reprint the old and expensive cards in an affordable (AKA not FTV) form." Otherwise, Giant Spider wouldn't have survived for every core set.
Great move by the design team. An iconic artifact, EDH staple and all around great card. With the addition of lightning greaves, its looking like new people to the format will be able to compete on most levels. I agree with Skittles2.0, I would love to see the addition of Solemn Simulacrum, another staple and all around good card.

This is pretty affordable considering the other cards you get. It's just the start. I don't expect them to drop all the good card at once, it'll trickle in.

Collectors are unaffected by reprints. Investors are affected, as they should be for being dumb enough to invest in gaming cards.

Yeah... Oh, the morons who invest in gaming cards. For one, as a player, you're an investor. Also, StarCity, Blackborder, CoolStuff... yeah, what a bunch of idiots. They're not doing well making a profit off MTG cards at all.
But more on topic, anyone whose only copy of Sol Ring isn't white-bordered or from Alpha or Beta is a complete loser. (OK, EDIT: Haha, this fired people up. Let me restate! IF this is your only copy of Sol Ring, you're a loser* That's what I meant.)
This new Sol Ring is completely lame looking. But they definitely know what they're doing. Just look at all the buzz on this one forum in the past 12 hours. This alone will sell product.
Cant say anything that hasnt already been here a bunch of times, but wow. JUST. WOW.

Yes, because retail companies definitely buy cards at their regular price and wait for them to gain value so they can resell and make a profit. Terrible counterpoint.

You know, there is data indicating that actual collectibles are not effected by reprints. There's a reason Alpha and Beta versions of cards are astronomically higher than even Unlimited versions, and that's not going to change, even after Serra Angel (as an example. Go look up the price) gets reprinted 30 more times.
As for the topic, oh great... now everyone gets a Sol Ring, so I can look forward to degenerate starts happening even more often... I really appreciate all those turn 3 Briberies and Consecrated Sphinxes you'll be enabling, wizards.
I worried about a price spike because i do not live in the US. I live in Argentina which means i cannot buy sealed products overseas (or shouldn't be allowed) and prices around here are way higher than they should.
There is no walmart. Magic cards are usually only sold at specific stores which can and will put arbitrary price tags on WoTC products.
I still remember back in the days when some stores used to sell the Kamigawa precon that had the jitte... WITHOUT the Jitte. (Jitte sold separately).
This plus the fact that magic products/singles cost around 4 to 6 times the US price to us, (due to peso-dollar conversion rate) makes even the most insignificant price spike a major concern.
i've no idea if this happens on other countries.
Now, dont get me wrong. i'd love to get one of these and be able to just sleeve it up and play it without any modifications.
I think all of the cards spoiled so far are very very interesting and this could very well be one of Wizards best made precons. My concerns are purely economical.
and i know i'll eventually buy Heavenly Inferno regarless of its price tag.

What about Judge foil? If that doesn't count then you got me and I am a loser.
If Sol Ring (uncommon) is okay, then my hopes are up for more Demonic Tutor as well. Not the DvD art though--new frame, old art. That would be absolutely incredible.
Yes, because retail companies definitely buy cards at their regular price and wait for them to gain value so they can resell and make a profit. Terrible counterpoint.
That's not the only way investment works. Buying cards in bulk with means to sell them for profit is making an investment.
Even disregarding retailers, how is investing in cards "moronic," as you put it?
People irked over Sol Ring's value dropping aren't people who are investing in the manner as you're quoted saying here. They're not going to make their bucks off Sol Ring at $8.
Investing in duals? Power? There's another story. Tell me that you've been sitting on a set of duals and watched them all increase in value, some nearly double in value this past year and that you feel like a moron for the profit you'd stand to make if you sold them right now.
As an owner of 4 FTV Sol Rings, my initial reaction was "crud, now EVERYONE will have them and I'll see them all the time". Then I realized that in my weekly playgroup of 5 regulars and a fringe regular, we all have at least 2 so it isn't affecting me/us really. And while we all have them, they don't go in all of our decks, I'd estimate seeing them in no more than half.
And since we each come to the table with anywhere from 3-8 constantly-evolving different decks per week, while Sol Rings could be an auto-include (if one doesn't mind moving cards from deck to deck), in our group at least they are not. And we play with very competitive decks with lots of big money cards (Maze of Ith, Wak-Wak, Revised Duals, Diamond Valley, Forcefield, Gaea's Cradle, etc...) Of course I'm only speaking from my experience, yours certainly will differ.
Now, as the only player in our group with a Maze of Ith, I'll selfishly admit I hope these aren't included...
To be honest, I was on the fence about getting this product. I was thinking about getting together with some friends, buying all 5 of them and then drafting the cards we wanted out of them. At this point however I'm going to probally eventually get all 5 myself.
I currently have 22 Commander decks and 7 of them have Sol Rings. If I get these five decks then I can instantly bump that up to 12 and most likely get some other playable cards to either make a new deck with or to supliment my existing ones.
At this point I wonder if it's too late to preorder them at my local comic book shop.
But I still will have the most awesome sol ring at the table.. EDH to me is about building fun pimp decks.. While it does the same thing Beta Sol ring > Comm reprint.

I'm excited, but for the rest of the players in our group; only three of us have Sol Rings (as we just started playing EDH recently, and most players haven't been playing MTG for more than two years), so this is a great chance for them to nab some good staples.
I like how this points towards a healthier policy regarding reprints of powerful cards from older sets. Magic is approaching its second decade, and trying to get a hold of older power cards has become quite difficult. It's a shame we'll probably never see something as powerful as Black Lotus reprinted, but then again such degenerate cards should not be encouraged in any kind of metagame.
I find it ironic that people are going to go nuts for Commander product just so they can get their hands on a playset of Sol Ring (plus whatever other crazy reprints they bring to the table), when the format the product is meant to support would only require a single copy per player.
makes the AU$90 I spent for 5 FTV Sol Rings seem a little wasted, but they're shiny and sexy... and I'm going to be forking out $200 for the set of these decks anyway
The promise of a Sol Ring with the awesome new art was enough to get me to order one, I am taking a gamble on the Mirror Mastery deck being the one I pre-ordered just because I loved Intet when Planar Chaos came out and made a pretty sweet RUG heavy sliver deck with him in it during the pre-release I attended, good times.

Has anyone in this thread indicated they were trying to get a playset of Sol Rings? Does anyone play a loose enough format to run a playset in a deck?
Most Commander players have multiple decks.
I think I have three Sol Rings. Getting 5 more means that I can make more decks without worrying about which decks get the 'better staples' or not. I refused to try to get any more because I felt that they aren't at all worth getting at the price they currently go for.
I feel that this is also an instance of WoTC 'fixing' prices on cards that are influenced GREATLY by Commander demand. Greaves seems to back this notion up.
When a card is 'necessary' to play a format (ESPECIALLY a casual one), it needs to be available.

Sol Ring was 10 bucks (retail) a couple years ago, before Commander saw a huge spike in interest.
Black Lotus Project illustrates the price increase rather nicely:
http://blacklotusproject.com/cards/Revised+Edition/Sol+Ring/
Ever since they started tracking the price, it has been steadily climbing. The strange spike/drop in Summer 2010 was FTV being released.
Same thing can be seen with Greaves:
http://blacklotusproject.com/cards/Mirrodin/Lightning+Greaves/
Imagine what would have happened to the prices of these cards after Commander was released if they DIDN'T include either...
