As usual, whoever is picking these foils is way behind on the times. I wonder who this idiot is that picks the cards anyway? They really could do so much better. That or give it up and at least pick rares we can trade if it's going to suck.
It's like they are saying "Here's a card to make sure people don't show up to your FNM". If they actually put something really good as an FNM prize, it brings people in droves to come play. that's what we need.
A very strange choice overall, as previously noted by others. I've heard discussion that the next block might be tribal in nature; if so, then a possible explanation arises.
WHAT! I was claiming for this card to get a new decent art and they do it bad again! Maybe it's a little better than the original art but this art sucks too.
This was a needed card because its original pancakes art was poor. So stop saying blablabla bad card not standard playable blablabla because there are people that don't care about standard. But they put again a poor art so whatever.
Terrible art by comparison. Like an extreme close up of an extremely dark picture. 4 Foil War Monks from Shards are WAY better than these. Slightly disappointed but all things considered, no point in dwelling on it. Here's to July!

The word in the bottom right of the art needs to go. Bad. Get out of there I'm looking at the card art thanks

That's kind of a weird choice of art forOHMYGODTHEY'REOUTSIDETHEWINDOW
So much hate .. why? It's not like they haven't printed Extended archetype staples before .. even in the last 6-12 months! Wasn't Spellstutter Sprite an FNM promo recently, or Bitterblossom? Or were those something else? I'm pretty sure Krosan Grip was an FNM promo last year. They can't all be Bloodbraid Elf, folks.

Most users of the forum seem to have the wrong idea of what a card should be for it to see print as a FNM card. My interpretation is that people in here think the card should be either a good card or a standard legal card. Wrong.
The FNM promos should not be the best of cards. Neither should it be anything that will save you a lot of money from winning it. It's simply a way of printing 1/4 of every semi-useful common and uncommon with new art work. They don't want the FNM cards to affect the game in any way. It should just be "useless" prices for weekly tournaments. Great cards are printed on promos for greater tournaments such as a Pro Tour, Grand Prix, Worlds and the American Nationals and of course as Judge Foils as rewards for good efforts.
Look at the list, tell me there are piles of bad cards. Most of them saw pretty serious play. Not everything is a Kitchen Finks or Bloodbraid Elf, but when you got a promo usually it was something you could use and it was worth $3-5. Getting a useless card you'll never be able to play or trade was a rarity until recently. And there is no way for them to ever affect the game because they've already seen print derp.

Hey, lolis with katanas are awesome, and I don't care about their home country.
Personally, I wish they would make more "throw-back" promos of popular cards from older sets. I was really impressed when I discovered Spellstutter Sprite was made a FNM promo.
I agree with the sentiment that FNM shouldn't be pushed as a standard player exlusive event. Just because there are people with competitive type II libraries showing up to play doesn't mean that they don't also have competitive libraries for other formats. Or even casual libraries for that matter.
My playgroup shows up to FNM because it is a chance for us to get together once a week and share something we enjoy. It's not because we have a chance to get a promo and "pimp out our tournie deckz" with them. We have plenty to benefit from, were they to focus FNM promos on more iconic, popular cards from former sets.
And where is the "lost business" again? If there is "no incentive" to showing up to FNM because the monthly promo is "garbage" (apparently due to it not having a place in some overpriced Type II deck to school people with), what's stopping a person from just showing up for their weekly purchase of booster packs? $10 for three boosters and a small supportive commute is cheaper than $15 for three boosters and all that extra time being spent playing in the store for an event you might lose in. Our LGS have people do it all the time where they just stop over Friday nights to say hello and buy some product then head off to do their own thing, rather than have to commit a few hours to playing in the store and risk losing the extra $5 to no prize being won.
Maybe I'm missing the point to why people think it's a good idea for FNM promos to be almost exclusively Type II relevant cards. To be honest I would like a better chance of maybe seeing a promo Brain Freeze, or hell, even a Kjeldoran Warrior.
As for this month's card, I never cared too much for the War Monk. Though undoubtedly strong, it was too generic for my likings. However this artwork has much to be desired for, which is likely the real reason I'm not anxious in owning one.

When you lose to back-to-back Banefires in limited, only to learn they were both passed to the opponent during the draft, you begin to question the stability of your playgroup.
I may be a fan and I may be a boy, but I am by no means a "fanboy."
I would admittedly like to see some T2 stuff printed, but I really like some of this throwback stuff. I was a huge fan of Shards, a lot of my old favorites come from that set and the Rhox is one of them.
I think it's worth noting that this is the third card from this cycle to get a promo (see Woolly thoctar and Sprouting Thrinax). Maybe in the future we can expect them to finish this out? The other two weren't great, but they'd be cool.
As far as aesthetics....it's a RHINOCEROUS. You ever seen a pretty rhino? Me neither.

I don't hate the art but it could have been better/a different card. Something is actually played in a format for players to be excited about lol
