This is actually pretty much what I expected. Official support in the form of preconstructed decks, officially naming it Commander, but not making it a sanctioned format. Though I was surprised by the announcement that they'd be printing whole new cards for Commander. Wouldn't this be the first time they've actually put new cards into Eternal without printing the cards in an expansion since, like, the book promos or something? (I'm not counting Sword of Body and Mind in FTV: Relics).
That's a curveball I didn't expect, to say the least.
Edit: Oh yeah, and I'm preemptively updating my sig to say "Commander:" just because I can.
The spoiled card is awesome, the name change sucks but what can you do. 5 new wedge generals for sure alone is great news
From Forscythe's article:
These combinations have been woefully short-supplied on legendary creatures, so each deck contains the corresponding Planar Chaos Dragon (such as Intet, the Dreamer) as well as two new legendary commanders in those colors, plus oversized foil versions of all three.
The attempted name change is a mistake, I think. They tried it before when they added it to MTGO and the new name didn't catch on. Having two names adds the possibility of confusion. ("Want to play Commander? Sorry, I only have an EDH deck.")
Though perhaps the Legal dudes were worried about a lawsuit from the people who own the Highlander trademarks.
They really couldn't afford to acquire the domain name mtgcommander.com?
Anyway, these changes are meh. I don't see much logic behind the cards only being legal in Vintage/Legacy, really. I think they should have been legal in all formats, or no formats.
Everyone is still just going to call it EDH, so, people upset about the name change probably don't have anything to worry about.

10 new generals commanders. It looks like each deck comes with the appropriate PC dragon and 2 other legends of the same color to swap in as generals commanders.

It's ten new wedge generals. Each color will get it's Planar Chaos dragon and will get 2 new generals additionally. EDIT: Mega ultra super sarnathed'
This is fantastic for casual players, but the only thing I am upset about is that the new cards will be hard to come by as singles potentially, for anybody like me who will want to play with them in normal 60 card decks. All in all, I am much happier about this than I am to see yet another half-thought multiplayer variant that won't be supported six months after release. Bravo Wizards!
Ten new generals sound so cool plus a foil oversized Teneb and I hope Oros will be so nice to have. I just hope they're the same size as Planes or Schemes so those sleeves will hold them.

Standard: Jeskai Tempo
Legacy: Dredge, Burn

"So... of the 49 unspoiled cards, what are the odds of Reserved List bypasses? Or are they going to be M12 previews?"
Like we don't already have enough to speculate on already. Unused trademarks and three sets (MBS, Action, M12) weren't enough to keep us pondering?

May your games be chaotic and your decks be Rogue.
Love all the changes except the name. While i am playing edh my creatures will still come into play and get removed from the game however the name is a small price to pay for specific edh cards and new wedge generals. I just hope the price on these doesnt hit ftv prices or anything close...
With this being the multiplayer product of the year, Im guessing this will be at walmart and such...so no worries on the price.
Im mostly looking into the duals that will be in the deck since they are wedge decks....
And i like the spoiled general(will never call them commanders).....his ability overrides his low toughness making him easier to cast as the game goes on.
I just hope they do a grixis deck my fave EDH colors

Well, it sounded to me that these are specially designed multiplayer cards that wouldn't really work so much for one reason or another in a normal 1v1 duel. So they're not things that for the most part you'll see in a future main set or anything like that.
Usually getting corrected by 4 people in a row means you posted something really dumb but hey, if it's 10 new generals and reprints of the dragons instead I am very glad to be wrong. So the pre-cons come with 3 general options? $35 is seeming like a great deal. I already can't wait to get 4 other friends when it first comes out, each buy one of the decks and play a game.
I am going bonkers over the Wedge generals and Pre-Cons. It's about time a little varity popped up in my favorite format. I would still use Doran for my general, but that Centaur is a worthy addition!
My friends and I were already using two copies of a general commander. One in the same sleave just in case it get's condemned or bant charmed into the pile and one in a pimp sleave that just sits there with a general commander damage counter and re-cast die on it.
So, this oversize novelty general will be super neat to have. I'm sure they just plan on doing the ten new wedge commanders and the futuresight dragons for now, but I'd really like to see some of the more popular legends given the same treatment.
Couldnt they reprint functional reprints of legacy/vintage staples but with drawbacks that are relavant to a multiplayer format?
Not only cool throwbacks but a work around the reserved list?

Don't you see that the whole aim of Moderators is to narrow the range of thought? In the end we shall make infractions literally impossible, because there will be no words in which to express it. Every concept that can ever be needed, will be expressed by exactly one word, with its meaning rigidly defined and all its subsidiary meanings rubbed out and forgotten.
Oh man, I didn't even notice the 51 new cards thing! I have a feeling this is going to spawn a lot of new Multiplayer decks from me. Death by Dragons! That card makes me happy on so many levels.
I just wonder how I'm going to fit the oversized foil dragons into my dragon collect.
Couldnt they reprint functional reprints of legacy/vintage staples but with drawbacks that are relavant to a multiplayer format?
Yes, they could. It would actually be a pretty cool workaround to the reserve list and the problem of having these cards in Standard (i.e. ignore Standard entirely, release directly to Eternal).
Why did Wizards feel the need to change the name of a format they didn't create. Also, isn't there a format already called Commander or am I thinking of General?
I like the EDH specific products however, wonder if any of them will show up in Vintage/Legacy.
And for the preview art, it has uwr in the info text. (my favorite color combination!)
Looks BRW to me, the white represented by the sword halo. Of course, just my intepretation.
Love the centaur and im happy that they are leaving the rules and ban list to Sheldon and his team.
Way more excited for this than planechase and archenemy.
