I'm interested to see what rare is this F&L's equivalent to Slivers' Rootbound Crag. You know, the rare that's better than the other ones, but only fits the theme marginally if you turn it sideways.
Oh, and the equivalent to Wild Pair's "WTF?! Of all choices, THIS?!" factor.
i wonder will it be mono red deck... if it does... then only several non-basic land cards that could fit in the deck... i bet its spinerock knoll or keldon megaliths
Frankly, I find this severely disappointing. I mean...seriously? A burn deck? That's it? Not to say it won't make a good product, but this is really unimaginative and not something I'd shill out 40 bucks on. Slivers were a bit of fun. It's always amusing to toss them out there and see what new forms and combinations will arise. But this? You can create imaginative burn decks, like those that revolve around cards off the beaten path like Ion Storm, but when I consider the number of other themes & possibilities that could've gone into this...it's just lame. Such as:
Rebels
Nicol Bolas's rise to power
Yawgmoth's army
Clones, Doppels & Mimics
the Animal Kingdom
Champions of the Three Kingdoms
Augustin, the Grand Manipulator
Cosmic Horrors
Chaos Incarnate
Memnarch's Vision
Self-Destruction
From the Ruins
Those are just several examples of many, that I happened to come up with off the top of my head just now. And as far as cards for Spikes are concerned, there are any number of powerful cards that fit into those themes, particularly that one up top. I desire each card on some level, but these ones are going to be VERY low on my list. Sorry WotC, I'm not buying it. In more ways than one.
About any "subpar" mechanics or cards: Context is king.
If I make a templating or grammar error, let me know.
The franchise MtG most resembles is Battlestar Galactica. Why? Its players exist in, at most, a dozen different models at any given point in time, with perhaps up to 3% variation, 5% if you're lucky.
No chance marketing puts Arc Lightning as the art they use for the announcement. The art has to be 100% Chain Lightning.
That art shows one mage hitting 2+ targets...Chain Lightning doesn't really do that most of the time, unless the opponent is also a Red mage and the opponent makes a really critical play mistake. Wizards usually wants the art to line up with what the card does...if Chain Lightning is in it probably isn't using that art,as it doesn't properly represent it.
[CARD]
Pyrotechnics[/CARD], Pyrokinesis, Rolling Thunder, Arc Lightning, Barbed Lightning, Jagged Lightning, Forked Bolt, and Forked Lightning all do hit 2+ targets as a norm.
It's the card that players covet in foil, and it's what's going to sell the product to a majority of the customers.
This is something aimed as casual players, not Spikes. I'd love a Chain Lightning reprint, but don't get your hopes up as it is not a universally popular card that is a big hit with both casuals as well as competitive players in the way something like Crystalline Sliver is/was. I doubt most players have heard of it, or really understand why it's good and not just a worse Lightning Bolt.
Hey, I hope it's Chain Lightning, but I've hoped for Goyf, Wasteland, Force of Will, Rishaden Port, and Dark Confidant reprints/promos for an awfully long time and through quite a few golden opportunities, but to no avail. Don't get your hopes up.
Also a Premium Burn deck that can't have Firestorm is pretty sad. Damn Reserve List.
well it'll be quite worthy if they put a foil chandra nalaar or jaya ballard there... and im still hopin that its not going to be a straight up burn spell only, again non-basic rare land, or good creatures or never before foil cards could make this quite worthy... and im withholding my judgment until then...

You're overthinking it. For a first look at a product being announced, especially for a product with content that isn't "new", it doesn't make sense for them to put a random art of a medicore spell. I'm actually surprised they didn't just show the entire card of Chain Lightning outright.

You are severely underestimating two things: 1) Who this product is being marketed to, and 2) the knowledge of the casual crowd. Yes, the starting goal is to market this to the casual crowd, but putting a copy of Chain Lightning in this deck will tempt at least some semi-serious players just enough to buy a deck while not alienating the intended audience. That's smart marketing. As for the casual crowd, there are many non-tournament players that have either played from way back in the day or those who have done enough homework (for their casual burn decks, obviously) to know Chain Lightning. Just as you imagine your share of adolescent kids or players who have been in the game for < 5 years, there is a fair share of the population that have been playing for long enough to know enough to know Chain Lightning.

I'm not getting my hopes up. I honestly don't really care, but I'm just calling it as I see it. Also there is a huge difference between wishing for Tarmogoyf and Force of Will versus wishing for Chain Lightning.
Is it just me or is the set symbol really...bad? It seems extremely cliched and poorly designed compared to most of what we've been getting over the years. It seems as if they just went, "Fire? Lightning?" Let's just put 'em together and roll this out!
This actually makes me happy, because I think that arbitrarily inflating the rarity of a card to mythic just for the sake of the box set is silly (I'm looking at you, DD: PvtC). Planeswalkers, Akroma, Sliver Overlord, sure. Lord of the Pit was pushing it. Negator and Rage were weird.

Along with many mods, I've moved shop over to MTGNexus. Come check us out!
Even one would make it fly off the shelves. It's a shame they never put playsets of playable cards in these.
That's so you need to buy 3-4 of them.

Out of the blackness and stench of the engulfing swamp emerged a shimmering figure. Only the splattered armor and ichor-stained sword hinted at the unfathomable evil the knight had just laid waste.
What does everyone think this art is for? My guess is Forked Lightning maybe or (hopefully) Chain Lightning. Jagged Lightning is another possibility I suppose.
If they include a rare land like they did with Slivers then
I'm guessing the land will more than likely be Valakuut, The Molten Pinnacle. It's the best fit flavor-wise for what seems to be an all out mono-red burn deck. They may include an Expedition Map as well so there is a better chance of actually seeing the Valakuut in a game.

Read the thread so far. This has been commented on quite thoroughly.
Burn is one of my favorite (albeit not as competitive) decks that has taken me years to foil out, seeking all the judge promo lighting bolts, Judge Ball Lightning, Judge Hammer of Bogardan, DCI Mogg Fanatic, Foil Wastelands, Foil Fireblasts, Foil Jackal Pups, ect.
One thing is for certain: if this deck DOES contain Chain Lightning, then not only will I purchase this to get four, I will be buying them in Japanese like I did with duel decks Phryexia vs the Coalalition

I do not believe this product will be printed in Japanese. Slivers was only published in English and there does not appear to be any evidence that this would change with this product. Although I would like to see them change that.
On the product, I feel it would make sense for WOTC to put chain lightning in this product. It is not reserved and only expensive because of its set. That seems like a perfect card for them to include in something like this.

ok, low price for chain lightning on magiccards.info is $13.98 right now. If chain lightning does get reprinted in this what do you thing the original will go to and how much do you think it would be to buy the new foil one??

Sliver Overlord was about 10~13 before and after the first Premium deck was on shelves. My guess is that the price won't be affected that much.

And now Sliver Overlord is going for 4~7. But to be fair, Chain Lightning sees competitive play so it will drop 3~5 dollars. Anymore and I'd be surprised.

That really depends on a lot of factors: how much of the other cards are worth buying, how many of chain lightning are in the deck, etc.
