Necrotic Ooze is awesome for my Johnny-likings. I may actually want to build a fun deck around him...
The Ratchet Bomb is awesome. Use that, Darksteel Axe, Darksteel anythingelse and Phylactery Lich for some Mono-black coolstuff.
I dont think that Ratchet Bomb is as good as it looks, in standard at least. It is important to keep in mind that creatures are much better now than they were when powder keg was around. It is much easier to end a game with one or two creatures, than having to play an attrition war while drawing through a third of your deck. This means that mass removal is much more likely to be used on one or two creatures, as opposed to many. Is it worth paying 2 mana and 2 turns of beatdown to kill 2 two drops? probably not.
This seems like a card printed for legacy more than anything else. It kills all of merfolk's (and most of zoos) creatures!
I am very surprised that they gave Riddlesmith such a potentially abusable ability; i dont see why they couldnt have put a 1 cost with that ability. It makes an artifact aggro deck's late game much better when you can cycle through lands whenever you cast creatures. Also, the potential for abuse with dredge cannot be ignored (although that would require some crafty deckbuilding). I wouldnt be surprised if Riddlesmith is part of some kind of degenerate engine somewhere, it certainly is begging to be broken!
It's an instant speed 5/5 trampler for 4. Wtf do you people want seriously? It has applications in populate/ above the curve beats decks, or in Bant control/ flash. I seriously think anyone mad at this card for any reason other than losing an attacker to instant speed wurm, should go home and make their own awesome card game and leave the rest of us alone.
Buried Alive getting Devoted Druid, Morselhoarder, and any good mana sink or tap ability (e.g. Ambassador Laquatus or Cunning Sparkmage). Play Necrotic Ooze and you have an 7 mana two card kill that can be executed by turn 3 or 4 and is only disrupted by hand disruption, graveyard removal and counters.
I'm seeing a few posts about how the Ooze and how it interacts with levelers. From my understanding, it'll gain the ability 'Level Up', but the rest of the stuff printed on the levelers are static abilities, like from a CI from a few months ago:
Q: Does Cairn Wanderer get any abilities from a leveler in a graveyard? For example, if Knight of Cliffhaven is in my graveyard, does Cairn Wanderer have flying?
A: Nope! While they're in the graveyard, levelers have none of the abilities that Cairn Wanderer looks for. Knight of Cliffhaven doesn't have the ability "flying." The "LEVEL 1-3" symbol represents a static ability that means "As long as this creature has at least 1 but no more than 3 level counters on it, it's 2/3 and has flying." This ability doesn't function in the graveyard, and a Knight of Cliffhaven in the graveyard doesn't have any level counters on it anyway, so it doesn't give Cairn Wanderer flying.
This card will be the worst rare in RTR and less remembered than skaab ruibator in three months. It struggles to be on the same power level as mass of ghouls, even in limited.
That its not simply "not good enough for competitive", or underpowered. But that this is offensively bad, the real stinker tier.
Still, my best evaluation is that its approximately on the same power level as a 4/4 for 4 vanilla beater.
Yeah. You can level up the ooze, but all it would do is gain a stack of counters that won't do a single thing. But hey, at least you leveled up something!
But yeah, I am liking the discard engine the Riddlesmith can generate. With a couple Eldrazi that recur the entire graveyard, cheap artifacts, or what have you, he just breaths breakable.

As far as how the Ooze interacts with level up creatures in the graveyard:
Short answer: The same way the level up creature would work if it were in play.
Long answer: The abilities granted for specific levels of a creature with the Level Up ability are only active if the creature is that level. So if you have Echo Mage in the yard, you could start paying the level up cost, putting levels on your creature and then start using the ability once you've gotten your ooze to the appropriate level. Basically, a level up creatures text book only has the Level Up ability and whatever the portion of the text box says for the specific level it is at. The other portions don't even exist as far as the game is concerned.
Question: compared to the wording on my card, i wonder if, for example, Sakura-Tribe Elder is in your graveyard, can you sac Necrotic Ooze for a land?
i don't think so, but...
EDIT: i guess WotC decided that reminder text wasn't needed, but i think it's going to cause confusion for folks who don't read articles at their site!
And Hell no leveling doesn't work like that! level up IS the Activated ability.

Skill is an ability that relates more so to the type of deck that's built and how said player pilots it. It also relates to the ability to assess the board and use the cards available to you in the most optimal way relative to each situation.
When a deck is filled with above par cards and every play is solid, there comes a diminishing need to "think" for the lack of wanting to use a better word.
THE BOMB! Wow this is so great for killing agro! People saying its good against walkers... IDK Its not like if you have it out early I'm going to play a bunch of them into it. If you top deck it... I'm gona get quite a few activations in b4 it goes off. Its true power is Killing tokens, fast creature decks, and the new artifact decks. And Yes its pretty filthy with Sun Titan!
The Ooze is pointless with Level up creatures. It only gets activated abilities, and the only activated ability a leveler has in the graveyard is Level up. So you can put level counters on your Ooze all day long, they won't do anything for it.

Why would this be the case? And wouldn't this imply that the Ooze could use the level up ability of, say, Transcendent Master to reach a certain level, then use the abilities of another creature when at that level - for example, Guul-Draz Assassin? That doesn't seem logical to me.
Question: compared to the wording on my card, i wonder if, for example, Sakura-Tribe Elder is in your graveyard, can you sac Necrotic Ooze for a land?

I think you could. Note in the Wizards article that announced the Ooze that its name will replace that of the creature it's mimicking.

No you can use that ability. It's all activated abilities, you substitute the name where necessary. It was mentioned in the article.
EDIT: AHHHH NINJA!
Necrotic Ooze does nothing with levelers except get pointless counters. The abilities are static.
Ratchet Bomb will kill weenies, probably. Only problem is that once it starts ticking, you'll need outside help to reduce its charge counter count should it go too high. Your opponent may be happy to just proliferate it to a count too high for their weenies, you know.
Necrotic Ooze can be fun, but rather dependant, even if it is able to steal opponent creature's abilities.
Scrapmelter is basically Shriekmaw in SoM. Kills stuffs, and has bunch of targets. Again, though, the uncommon is annoying; Does it mean that common removals will totally suck? So far the only good common removal I can think of are that -4/-4 and Silvok Replica.
The Juggernaut is OK. Huge in a dedicated artifact deck, for one.

Which is a + for many, many decks.
I agree and think it's breakable though still liking Heshrew Crab over it in my Architect/Masticore deck.
