Suppose it could be ok in limited... the Invokers were playable in ROE and cost 8 to activate, though Dawnglare would lockdown an entire board rather than kill 1 creature at a time... they were also common.
If you take the Planeswalkers away from this set, it might be one of the worst sets in a long time. I planned to order a couple of boxes when they spoiled Elspeth and Venser. Now I have seen just a very small handful of cards that would excite me to open so I believe I will pass and just trade for what I need. Plus the Buy a Box promo is junk, unlike M11 where the BoP made me want to buy a box for it alone.
In summation.....Star Trek wins a prolonged naval battle against superior, yet less technologically advanced, numbers, with Picard leading the assault, while Kirk takes your soul by laying out Solo and probably his manservant Chewy as well, before impregnating and ditching your Princess.
I'm not that disappointed with this, I just would have liked it if they kept the cycle to 4 rather than feeling the need to make one for each color.
Hey, don't knock Lich's Mirror, no other card in Magic combos off you surrendering. That's pretty mythic imho. I know tha tit doesn't combo off you surrendering.
I lost the game by the way
Since it doesn't look like anyone else responded to this, according to the link you posted (and I've trusted Magiccards.info for years) you lost the moment you conceded because the combo you suggest is specifically called out as not working.
Oh, hidden text. I love it.
and this card is very uninteresting. This set (so far) appears to be designed for non-spike, non tournament players.
I'd actually arrange it along enemy color lines: UGBWR. 4, 6, 8, 10, 12. That is a VERY satisfying cycle that is all the more satisfying in that it took so long to complete. I can now sleep at night.
Take your monoblack deck, then set aside 14 swamps. Add 4 Creeping Tar Pits, 4 Darkslick Shores, 4 Drowned Catacombs, and 2 Jwar isle Refuge and add 4 Jace, the Mindsculptors. Your monoblack deck is instantly better. Better yet, drop those refuges, throw in some islands and some mana leaks, and lo and behold, you're now playing a real deck. Congratulations. Welcome to the world of competitive M:TG.
I hate crap rares. It doesn't even kill Emrakul. Waste of a slot.
OH NO!!! This card doesn't kill the most powerful card in print? How could they have such awful undersite?!?!?! A waste of a card slot it must be because it isnt the most powerful card ever printed! How could they dream of printing a card if it didn't say "8: destroy target what ever you want, whenever you want, reguardless of any game rules." WHAT A WASTE OF A SLOT!!! THE WORLD IS ENDING!!! This card must be horrible in all formats because one person can't find a use for it in standard!!! What will I ever do if I pull this from a pack?!?
Aside from that paragraph of obvious sarcasm, this card seems like a really fun card for casual and limited play alike. Ace1 is right: this card seems over priced for its affect in current standard but you can't expect Wizards to make a 249 card set and print only standard bombs can you?
Think of the Johnnys and new players who will open one of these babys in foil and crack a wide smile full of mischief and wonder. Can I ask you whether cards like Mox Opal would have the same affect on a kids demeanor towards this game? To the untrained eye cards like the Opal seem bad while this card seems epic! You'll be able to kill anything youd like with a cool looking artifact!
It's the differnece between solid and efficent standard cards like vengevine and high CMC, crazy effect, sweet looking cards like Platinum Angel: one has a wow factor to standard junkies and one makes 12 year olds and johnys excited. Not every rare you pull will be Baneslayer! Their are Necrotic Plagues in every set!

Casual, EDH, and Constructed Player
Wacky. Reminiscent of Shivan Meteor. Probably wouldn't be too cheery to pull this - certainly not compared to a lot of the other rares and mythics in the set - but it might be limited fun.
If you take the Planeswalkers away from this set, it might be one of the worst sets in a long time. I planned to order a couple of boxes when they spoiled Elspeth and Venser. Now I have seen just a very small handful of cards that would excite me to open so I believe I will pass and just trade for what I need. Um. Really? Metalcraft? Indomitable Archangel? Tempered Steel? Skithiryx? Skinrender? Galvanic Blast? Grip of Darkness? Stoic Rebuttal? Mox Opal? Sunblast Angel? Prototype Portal? Wurmcoil Engine? Myr Galvanizer? Sure the buy-a-box promo isn't as hawt as BoP, but really does that matter that much? Plus if you're buying boxes for planeswalkers and not at all a casual/EDH/limited player, why not just wait until the pro's build the deck for you or buy your PW's and be done with it? I'd say you made a bad investment otherwise...
All things aside, I can agree with it being 12 damage after the explanation of the whole cycle. It's cool how they did that, 4, 6, 8, 10 and now 12 across all the Towers. Not sure if they planned that from the start but it's cool to think that they actually did consider finishing the cycle when they returned to Mirrodin.
Possible EDH card. Can't see it making it in any constructed format though.
EDH isn't the home of bad cards.
Some cards become playable in EDH because combo decks struggle for meaningful redundancy in a singleton format, control decks struggle for meaningful card advantage when there's 100 cards in a given deck, and aggro decks struggle to blow through 40 life without running out of gas. This means that games are generally slower, higher mana totals are hit, more cards are seen, and decks often run cards that provide redundancy to something they want to do anyways.
Cards that would be playable except that other cards are slightly more efficient find homes in EDH. Expensive-but-multipurpose cards that don't see play because cheap-but-specialized cards take their place in competitive constructed formats find homes in EDH. Inefficient cards that are hard to deal with find homes in EDH. Funky effects that normal decks don't have the space for find homes in EDH.
But a card that is simply bad doesn't magically become good just because EDH is a "casual" format. If anything they become worse because every card in an EDH deck has to pull its weight and do something important within the context of the deck.
and isn't it interesting that the golems kept the red tower a secret. . .the same way thay wotc is keeping all the red cards away from us? conspiracy!!!

"A wizard who reads a thousand books is powerful...a wizard who memorizes a thousand books..is plain stupid."
It probably got cut from Mirrodin for space issues and just hung around in limbo for a while. Now its back, yea! I've used the other ones before, maybe if limited is slow enough to use it, then it would be a decent pick.

I agree completely. This is probably the worst set ever printed. I mean, why the heck did they only put 92 cards in it? They should have kept going and had, like, 249 cards or something. That way we'd see some more cool stuff.

Skill is an ability that relates more so to the type of deck that's built and how said player pilots it. It also relates to the ability to assess the board and use the cards available to you in the most optimal way relative to each situation.
When a deck is filled with above par cards and every play is solid, there comes a diminishing need to "think" for the lack of wanting to use a better word.
Um. Really? Metalcraft? Indomitable Archangel? Tempered Steel? Skithiryx? Skinrender? Galvanic Blast? Grip of Darkness? Stoic Rebuttal? Mox Opal? Sunblast Angel? Prototype Portal? Wurmcoil Engine? Sweet, a rebuttal.
Metalcraft: Great mechanic, except it only works if I build around artifacts. I guess I will have to wait until the pros show me how to do this.
Indominable Archangel: Wow, it is almost as good as BSA and now I have to build an artifact centered deck and this card isn't an artifact. Pretty limited applications. And if you say "4/4 flying for 4 is sick" please tell me how much play Conundrum Sphinx is getting.
Tempered Steel: is awesome. So is Grand Architect.
Skythhththxxsxxsisisxxs: Is cool for EDH. Personally, I don't enjoy shuffling a 100 card deck. Just not a big EDH fan.
Galvanic Blast: is a pretty strong card if I want to play a red based artifact deck.
Grip of Darkness: is good but not overly exciting. I won't buy boxes to get this.
Stoic Rebuttal: A strictly better Cancel and strictly worse Counterspell. Not excited.
Mox Opal: Should be a $5 rare, will be a $25 mythic. Meh card IMO.
Sunblast Angel: Is pretty cool
Prototype Portal: Great Johnny card. I am more of a Timmy/Spike, so doesn't excite me personally.
Wurmcoil Engine: Is a very strong card, but not worth buying a box for a card I am going to get at the prerelease.
My point is this: the majority of the rares and mythics in this set are not exciting to ME personally. I think it is full of weak cards with the exception of a very few of the spoiled cards. I know only a third of the set is spoiled, but WotC seems to spoil the best stuff early to get buyers excited. If this is the best of it, I fear for the other 150 cards. When I buy a box, I hope to at least get my money back and score some interesting trade bait. If you open a box with no Planeswalkers, you lose badly on value.
One other point: You really didn't have to resort to "let the pros build your deck for you". You know absolutely nothing about me and I take pride in being a creative deck builder, so I am really insulted by this comment. I want cards that are well costed for their effect or cards that are interesting as cornerstones of decks. I don't see much here except Metalcraft and Myr Tribal.
In summation.....Star Trek wins a prolonged naval battle against superior, yet less technologically advanced, numbers, with Picard leading the assault, while Kirk takes your soul by laying out Solo and probably his manservant Chewy as well, before impregnating and ditching your Princess.
For some reason, I want to run this in a burn deck. I know that it's something that takes a while to activate, but it can prove good if I'm running low on cards and need to control creatures. Though this will most likely be casual and I guess I'm a casual player.
Not all of us play EDH with hypertuned decks that are designed to slaughter as fast and efficiently as possible. Some of us play it for... oh, I dunno... fun. If you don't like, it don't play it. No one is gonna hold a gun to your head and scream at you to play Tower of Calamities or die.
Personally, I play EDH with my mates to use cards that don't see use anywhere else. My Asuza deck can easily generate the mana for it, and mono green will happily take creature removal that it can support.
And remember - outside of sanctioned EDH tournaments it is a casual format. I and everyone I know play to the don't be a douce principal so that cards like this do see the occasional bit of use, if for no other reason that a laugh. Same reason I run mana echoes and cryptic gateway with eldrazi spawn and spawnsire of ulamog as a casual constructed deck. Its a silly deck that works enough to make it fun, without steamrolling every deck in the area.
I'm actually a fairly casual player - tournaments just aren't all that fun IMHO. I play EDH because I like the different challenges one faces when building and playing an EDH deck compared to more traditional formats.
I'm just sick of people saying "good in EDH" as if the format is a dumping ground of bad cards. There really are cards that become worlds better in EDH, but it's not because EDH is a casual format (although EDH is certainly casual). It's because it's a format that works with a different set of rules that makes for some very interesting decisions in deckbuilding ("My Sharuum deck already has Sundering Titan, Darksteel Colossus, and a ton of 5/5 Sphinxes... do I really need Inkwell Leviathan, or should I replace it with more drawpower?").
TL;DR
Casual≠bad.
EDH≠bad card dumping ground.
