What does the Orb of Insight count?
The Orb of Insight counts all occurences of a single word in the name(s), mana cost(s), typeline(s), rule text(s), reminder text(s), artist name, and power/toughness of all cards in a given set. It counts mana costs such as 3W and power/toughness combinations such as 2/1 as single words.
The Orb of Insight does not count words found in the flavor texts of cards unless it is somehow broken. That has only been the case once so far.
What is this special code thing?
You must type in the special code you see at the bottom of the Orb to verify that you are an actual human being rather than an automatized process designed to check every word. If you don't see a special code, then something is wrong with the Orb. Check back later.
Does capitalization matter?
No. It matters neither in the search word nor in the special code.
If I get a result of 6 for Dragon, or 15 for Sliver, does that mean there are 6 Dragon/15 Sliver cards in the set?
In all likelihood, no. The orb counts occurences, not cards. A card named "Fiery Dragon" with type "Creature - Dragon" and rules text "Flying; R: Fiery Dragon gets +1/+0 until end of turn" would contribute 3 occurences of the word Dragon. Likewise, Sliver cards usually use the word Sliver at least three times per card (Name, Type, Ability).
I don't get results for searches like "Counter target spell". Why?
The orb does not search phrases, only single words.
I'm getting 1 result for Mountainwalk, but 0 results for walk. Why?
The Orb only counts whole words, not partial words. Likewise, plurals and singulars are different words. If you get 10 results for Goblin and 1 result for Goblins, the former does not include the latter.
There don't seem to be any results for can't, creature's, etc...
The Orb usually has a problem with the apostrophe normally found on keyboards. Copy this->’<-apostrophe and use it in your words. That should do it.
There don't seem to be any results for non-creature, non-land, etc...
For colors, types, and supertypes, you omit the hyphen from the word (noncreature, nonland). You only use the hyphen for subtypes (non-Goblin, non-Lair).
There don't seem to be any results for certain mana costs, such as B3 or GR...
The mana costs follow a strict pattern. The generic cost is always listed first, and X is listed before numbers. For colored mana, the pattern is:
2 colors
WU - UB - BR - RG - GW
UR - WB - BG - RW - GU
How can I search for words that include non-english letters such as ä, ö, ü, or Æ?
Unfortunately, you can't with the current version of the Orb.
How can I find certain symbols such as hybrid mana?
Hybrid mana is C/D, where C is the first color of mana, and D is the second, such as W/U.
Snow mana is S. The untap symbol is Q.
Loyalty symbols for Planeswalker abilities are +N or -N, where N is any number or X.
I'm getting a strange result...
It's likely from an artist name.
... Boros
Zoltan Boros, artist.
... D as single word
D. Alexander Gregory, artist.
... E or M as single words
E. M. Gist, Scott M Fischer, and Thomas M. Baxa, artists.
... Mark as single word
Several artists (Mark Brill, Mark Tedin, Mark Zug). Occasionally a card name.
... rk or post as single word
rk post, artist.
S or Waters as single words
Anthony S Waters, artist. Unless there are many instances of S, then it might be the Snow mana symbol.
... Rush as single word
Christopher Rush, artist. Occasionally a card name.
... Seagrave as single word
Dan Seagrave, artist.
... Walker as single word
Kev Walker, artist. Rarely, there might be a card with Walker in its name.
There seem to be a lot of occurences of certain words...
They're probably normal, and you might be missing another word that usually goes with those words, such as "remove" for "game," or "turn" for "end." On the other hand, you might just have found the name of or a hint to a mechanic!
Also, in a large set, there is a full complement of 20 basic lands, four for each color. Each basic land version provides two instances of the land's name, for a total of 8.
Speculation / Data Inferences Keywords and Mechanics
- Rebound: 12 cards
- Totem armor: 11 cards, all called "<something> Umbra"
- Annihilator: 10 cards
- Level up: 24 cards, based on the level-ranges encountered; the biggest of these has level ranges of 0-5, 6-11 and 12+!
Set Contents
- Defenders make their subtheme heyday. Love your Walls and they'll love you.
- Two planeswalkers: Gideon and Sarkhan. Sarkhan has a twist, as he has no +loyalty abilities!
- Three or four colorless tribal Eldrazi cards for your Eye of Ugin to love!
- There are no Ally, landfall, or (multi)kicker cards. This should not be a surprise since Rise of the Eldrazi is autonomous for Limited.

I've tried every planeswalker subtype (Gideon got four hits by the way), but Tribal returned 4 hits.
Given the presence of Eye of Ugin and "colorless instants and sorceries" being toted as a rumor and part of the set, I can't imagine that Tribal will not be for Tribal Eldrazi.
The third instance of planeswalker could easily be a card that references PW's. I think that is the most likely case, since there is pretty much no evidence of some unknown PW wondering around Zendikar. However, if it really is a PW my best guess would be Ugin (who is supposed to be dead) or the unknown planeswalker(who we know almost nothing about) that helped Sorin and Ugin seal the Eldrazi.
0 hits for Ugin. 0 hits for Ghost. 0 hits for Ghostfire...sad...2 spirits but only 1 dragon (meaning the dragon will not have "dragon" in its title and/or text. Might just be Sarkhan Vol's ultimate, of course...).
So 124 hits for level. Assume the Orb counts the word level in the little box and that gives you 3 counts per card. So 41.33333 cards. So Im guessing 30 somethin leveler cards with a few cards that interact with them. Something like "for each creature with level up, move them up one level" or something. Gives you a reason for why the top level is X+, so they can go over the level. Also probly a couple that lower the level.
Is there any way we know for sure that there are four tribal spells, and not something like two cards with the word tribal in their names that reference themselves by title once in their card text?

Mr. Jiggles comin' to town and gonna take you on down to the hootenanny, so y'all best be lookin' out for a good, jiggly time.
The various spread of (+/-) abilities also sort of lends itself to just 2 walkers.
So likely the third instance is just a card that references planeswalkers.
currently, we have one hit on +2, two hits on 0, two hits on -2 and one hit on -4
thats a total of 6 numbers that can be used on planeswalkers. At the regular 3 abilities per walker, that puts us at 2 walkers.
the weird part is only one +number...
It looks like loyalty costs aren't included in the Orb. I base this on the fact that the Zendikar Orb of Insight returns 0 hits for -7, a loyalty cost which appears on multiple planeswalkers in the set.

I always felt like the kor picture we have seen is our 3rd planeswalker.
I would think that only 4 hits for tribal means its a part of a name, possibly a small cycle of allies.
With the keywording of remove from the game (Exile), there is only one thing that this can mean. There is at least one card that causes you to win and/or lose the game in this set.
Because it seems unlikely that Wizards would make 2 cards in the set (one that causes a win and one that causes a loss), or reprint a new Abyssal Persecutor so quickly, it is probably that this is one in the same card. Something like...
[Do X]
If [Y], then you win the game.
If [Not Y], then you lose the game.

Here's a weird idea - could one of the new planeswalkers have a large starting Loyalty, but NO abilities that add counters - just a 0 ability and two that remove counters? (It would be another innovation, after all.)
Also, the third instance of planeswalker could be from the name of Sarkhan's or Gideon's card (a la Nicol Bolas, Planeswalker).
PS - Just to be certain, I checked and there are no hits for "Squee." ( <- Referencing a joke by Captain Black several months ago)
I know that level came up 124 times, but the instance of the word "up" came up 52 times. So, I am assuming it would be safe to say that there are no more than 52 cards with the ability "Level Up." But it is safe to say that it is probably less than 52 as the word up could come from flavor text or other reminder texts.
Just checked, there are no hybrid cards, so that bit of speculation was incorrect. Also, while I was certain there would not be any returning mechanics from ZEN/WWK, it's saddening that allies and landfall are gone, I hope they recycle those mechanics.

I'm sad about landfall, allies, yeah not so much.... Allies seemed destined for strictly limited play

"Level" appears 5 times per card, but "up" only twice, so "up" probably appears on 20 or so cards. Even conservatively guessing 20ish "level-up" creatures, that is still quite a lot!

It's 26 at most, given that "up" returns 52 times, two of which are used per card (keyword and reminder text).
Good to see Wizards wants to support that mechanic...
Did ALL the Allies just pack up and leave? I find it hard to believe there aren't any allies left on Zendikar. Also, it begs the question: if these "allies" aren't around now that the multiverse's biggest threat is here, were they ever really your allies to begin with?
