Love this guy. He comes in early, and can fill out your curve. No deck is going to waste their precoious removal spells in Draft/Sealed on an 0/1 that stays such-if they do, then you have bigger threats they can't take out. And when they inevitably don't take it out, you can dump two mana here and there over your turns until it becomes a one sided Howling Mine.
Interesting. Another fun level up card. Not my colors though so there's really no chance of me using it. I just wish people would chill out about the ability itself.
Maybe but you forget you DON'T HAVE TO PAY FOR EVERY LEVEL AND NOT ALL AT ONCE.
At level 0 - A 1cc chump blocker
At level 1 - A 1cc chump blocker that can draw you a card (but you got to discard 1)
At level 1 - A 1cc chump blocker that draws you a card and doesn't make you discard a card.
Yeah I understand, but what it comes down to is overall high priced creatures that don't get a P/T pump or at least not that good of one. It's just sad is all.

Uncommon Archivists are REALLY good in limited, usually. And if the format is as slow as I think it will be, this will be a game winner a LOT.
Wow, it's a level up creature that I don't actually hate.
U for a vanilla 0/1 is weak but Merfolk and Wizard are both viable tribes, after a single 1U level up it's a respectable Merfolk Looter style creature. And for another 2 level up's 2UU it's a very solid Archivist style creature. I like the ability to play it on turn 1, 2nd turn level it up and use it's loot ability, 3rd turn use it's loot ability and play another spell/permanent, 4th turn level up twice and use it's draw ability. It reminds me a fair bit of Jushi Apprentice and if the environment slows down a bit the slow card advantage it produces could be very relevant.
Really? I remember a lot of people (myself included) being quite happy about playing Jushi Apprentice. This one only takes the investment of 2 of her activations to become a permanent Archivist and it enters play one turn earlier, acting as a Looter in the meantime. It is a good card and it will see play once some pro includes it in a tight fisted control deck, at which point, everyone will forget having said a word against it and even shamelessly will bash new players when they say that it doesn't seem like a good card.
QFT.
I read this card and loved it. Why? Because a Looter going active on turn 2 is very good, in Limited, and even in Constructed. The amount of tempo you might lose from an early Lightning Bolt/Burst Lightning/Disfigure is pretty minimal, and if this does not get dealt with early the card filtering it provides is tremendously effective, especially if you are able to maximize your graveyard in some manner. This is as close to a Looter with Haste we might ever see, unless we finally get a R/U Looter (yes, please).
constructed, not so sure. it definitely has potential, but dies to any and everything. would it have killed 'em to have made his toughness level up slightly? at least Jushi never died to a NoSB or Engineered Plague (almost said Darkblast, but i'm pretty sure he died to Darkblast ).
Limited I see this as okay, but blue seems to be getting the short end of level up so far. The mechanic isnt very good imo The only thing it would work with is if you are playing blue green or something and using that wwk mythic that keeps green mana from leaving your pool
Another great design. It's awesome when they reinvent their own wheel. It opens up sooo many doors; must've made for some tough R&D choices... wish I could be in that sort of conundrum...
Also, someone said this in another thread discussing level up. Level Up allows for some mindgames with the opponent - Why didn't he level up his dude? Does he have the counter? Do I run into a trap!?
Telling your opponent that you don't have a counterspell in hand seems like a pretty bad idea. You will only have mana to level up in turn 5 or 6 when you can level and keep counter mana open. By then you can have a jace instead...
I'm sorry but there's not enough quality counterspelling in standard to bluff effectively and good players usually know better to try to play around imaginary or not counterspelling. Leveling up this guy will almost always be superior to pass the turn doing nothing in the hopes your opponent misplays because believing you have a counter. I usually find better to tap out (for Everflowing Chalice, for example) so the opponent overcommits in a hurry for seize "the chance" and next turn I DoJ.
I'm calling it right now- worst rare in the set. Even good limited players will find better bombs at common and uncommon no sweat. Worst. Episode. Ever.
I really do predict this to be our worst rare in set award winner. I'd be happier opening a jar of eyeballs, so I think anything worse is highly unlikely. This card wont just have zero constructed potential, but not be significantly better than a mass of ghouls in a draft.
i'm guessing because it would give control decks good, cheap utility creatures that could be dropped early and easily exploited. pretty lame, though.
Also, a limited environment filled with a bunch of FoD's sounds pretty awful on the interactivity side of things. It'd be not so much who has the right play, but who pulls the trigger on their level up first.

I think people need to stop judging level up creatures as "omg this card sucks, I have to spend this total amount of mana to get this maxed out level card. card x is better because it only costs this"
First, you don't have to pay the whole thing in one turn. I know everyone knows that but it doesn't seem to be sinking in. You can cast this thing on T1 and leave it to turn looter whenever you want. That means he goes down on T1 and leaves counter mana open T2. Looter couldn't do that.
Second, RoE is a limited intensive set! They've made it super slow (in comparison to other recent sets) and it's standalone meaning drafts of RoE, RoE, RoE. It should be a freaking blast. If you are one of those idiots that looks at every card and says, "This doesn't improve my Tier 1 deck therefore it is bad," you are going to have to wait for another set full of bombs and breakable cards.
On the topic of Tier 1 Standard though, I think this set is a psuedo reaction to Cascade still being in T2. To try and print a set that would help challenge Jund as the premier deck in Standard would be foolish. As Jund is about to rotate out, do you really want to tip the scales in the other direction and create a deck that will dominate for another whole year?
Level up creatures are going to make limited a blast. Sorry for the tangent.
The art is very good... that said i Hate the art on this card... It looks sterile and computer generated, frankly it doesn't look like a magic card... neither do the eldrazi.
Between all the hyper-aggressive creatures and removal from Alara, M10 and Zendikar, I do not have high hopes for Level Up in competitive Magic. Don't get me wrong, I like the mechanic; I just don't think it's going anywhere in a world of BBEs and Thoctars.

I really like the level up cards, this is no exception.
are they that afraid of giving blue or control anything even remotely useful?
