The question is how would that possbily be good? There would need to be something else in the set that lets that be a good choice. It certainly does though, and it's a beautiful piece.
IMO, the angel looks drastically different than the angels we've seen so far. No halo at all, and only 4 wings. A sign that the Eldrazi are defeated by the end of the story?
A balanced version of Balance would be schaweet, especially with nice angel art. All of this art is quite impressive. Wizards really knows how to pick'em artists.
And it is nice to see that Sarkhan really is surrounded (and possessed, probably) by Ugin. I wonder what that has to do with the story...

"I don't know why people say a double-edged sword is bad. It's a sword. With two edges." - Kamahl, Pit Fighter
Similarity in art, yes, however the art concentrates more on the necklace, possibly an artifact of some sort.

Sarkhan's good, as we all know, the other one too, as most people have been calling him Gideon.
The old Kor is ok..
The girl and her pearl ear- I mean, necklace is nice. I bet that's an artifact card.
The mushroom-Drazi vs the Allies, I already know.
The Tedin-Drazi is ok... makes me think if Mark Tedin should really do all the Eldrazis himself since his style seems to fit their descriptions.
And Gideon fighting Eldrazi head on like that? Even Sorin didn't slice the big guys with his sword.... (okay, Teeth of Akoum book cover shows him using his sword, but most certainly against a vanguard)
I've also seen the Jace vs Eldrazi... a attempt to counterspell an Eldrazi?
I've seen the dragon rider and also the vampire chick, and the bound Eldrazi, and of course, Kozilek.
The angel is nice, just a little silly though.... the DvD Luminous Angel is fine in that loose garb, but this is borderline prawn
The Eldrazi looks creepy.
The hexa-hedron is weird, but cool. What art is this?
Only recently I though that particular promo picture could actually be Kozilek... Almost the same, especially the head. And only just recently I noticed there are people in his butt....
Is it just me, or does it seem like the red liquid in some of those images might not be blood?
It looks like sarkhan is casting with it, and it doesn't seem to move or behave like blood at all. Is it possible that there is some mysterious red liquid associated with the eldrazi?
Could this red ooze be phyrexian black ooze 2.0?

I'll be sad if people don't start calling The Chain Veil "Fleetwood Mac."
Wow, that angel art is just amazing. It looks kinda Balance-esque. Could the "almost reprint" MaRo mentioned be a fixed Balance?
That's what I thought, and it would fit into the "Annihilator" theme with the Eldrazi. Of course they'd have to fix the mana cost of it. They did print several "fixed" versions of Balance (don't remember all of their names), though, so I don't know if they'd be up for printing another one.

Recent discussions here and elsewhere have made it clear that there seems to be a group of players who consider blue and control synonymous, as if they somehow started playing a game with four identical and "bad" colors that do nothing interesting because they just "turn men sideways" and then true, glorious blue, the only thinking person's color.

Marath, Will of the Wild

Actually, I don't think that's Gideon standing over one fallen Eldrazi... I think that's him standing over SEVERAL of the dead big guys. There are random brood lineage thrown in there... The one close to the bottom right looks like the large red and blue colored one that's been in several pictures, and behind Gideon to the left looks like the giant mushroom of death that all the allies were fighting. There's also random appendages that look like they belong to other Eldrazi that we've seen.
Could it be art for the 'obligatory-large-set-wrath-variant'?
That is some danged good art, I am truely impressed.
The best by far has to be the bleeding girl with the necklace.
Seriously thinking about printing this stuff off on our high-quality color printer and posting them up in our shop to showcase the set's art a bit for the early going, I know a number of foil collectors that are going to go nuts over some of these images.
About any "subpar" mechanics or cards: Context is king.
If I make a templating or grammar error, let me know.
The franchise MtG most resembles is Battlestar Galactica. Why? Its players exist in, at most, a dozen different models at any given point in time, with perhaps up to 3% variation, 5% if you're lucky.
Gideon looks cool and in a weird way makes me think of a young Urza with brown hair. I might go get me a lot of packs of this set looks worth it seeing art and the more PWs the better.
I find image #4 to be stunning. I wonder if it will be used at all, or if it is just concept art. Although she reminds me of Elspeth, their armors have distinct differences.
Also, the white lines in the background of Sarkhan's picture is an outline of a dragon. I did not notice that at first.
Its Ugin, the spirit dragon. Hes supposedly some ultra powerful mega time walking dragon of total ownage. Theres a lot of lore about him scattered around.

does anyone agree that that rider of the dragon looks pretty much like Garruk. I'm not saying he is on Zendikar but it sure does look like him riding that dragon. It could just be used for awesome box art.
Anyone else notice the Dragon outline in the Sarkhan Vol Art?? That is bad ass
Gideon as a Planeswalker will be sweet. Thought he was a badass in Puriflying Flame and I like how he generally cares about saving innocent peoples lives. But is he on Zendikar to make friends with Chandra or "Make Friends" with Chandra, thats the real question.
The girl with the blood on her face looks like Elspeth but she really does not fit into the Zendikar lore being that I figured she was trying to go back to her Homeworld that is infested with Demons.
Either Way all the artwork is bad ass.

The Sorin Nissa duo is old news.
Also, the walker count for the story is more like this:
Jace, Sarkhan, Gideon, Nissa, and Sorin. Chandra is off plane before the Rise story starts.

And the art for the bloodied woman is simply flawless.
The more I see, the more I notice how beautifully done cards can be made.
