It's understandable blue control players would be shocked and in denial at the notion of this card, since their decks have been dominating multiple formats for an eternity yet they've curiously never once had to deal with any counter-hosers that weren't ineffectual, narrow CRAP.
No it's not . This is a great sidebaord material . Otherwise , I can't think of anything that would use it main-deck .
IWhat are you talking about? Any control deck running black could benefit from this card- Its instant speed 10 point life swing, and could potentially cost B. Could be used as a primer to Cruel Ultimatum on your opponents turn if necessary. I'm pretty sure this is going to take corrupts place in MBC since Lorwyn is gone.

Its a freakin instant!
That (rarely) can cost B!

never has one mana been so powerful. Maybe this will only be a sideboard most of the time, but still sic.

It would see play. This has a little thing to work around, but honestly with all the Lifelink running around, it won't be hard to see it maindecked as a just in case against Vampires and Baneslayers. We'll just have to wait and see what comes out of the fog once LOR rotates!
I killed a ton of people with Absorb Vis when it was in limited, and this card is insane as well. As an instant, this cards is breath of malfegor 2.0. lol

The trapcost being B makes me think this is very focused silverbullet - à la Volcanic Fallout. But do we currently have any lifegain deck to worry? Not that I'm aware of.
For me, this must means one of two things. 1) Since R&D works and playtests a few months ahead of current standard, there was a powerful lifegain deck in their internal enviroment that required this to be printed to keep it in check. 2) Or we'll have lifegain as a theme (major or minor) in near future and this card is a preprinted silverbullet, which I find more likely since I see very few strong lifegains in current standard.

YOU ARE SURPRISED BY A MANTICORE! IT QUICKLY SHREDS YOUR FLESH AND DEVOURS YOU!
Lets take the baneslayer situation up a notch by saying you got a sanguin bound in play with one black open and 2 bloodghast in the grave waiting to be hasty and returned to play. Do you swing with the angel and hope its not a trap?
It seems that many of you have never played black control in standard or are not very experienced at limited because this card is really great for both.
With Corrupt leaving this is a good 2 of for a black control deck, and even better it can be splashed where Corrupt cannot, because it doesn't care how many swamps you have. Also at seven it its fine, and the fact that it is an instant is way worth paying the 1 extra black. Instants are everything in control.
In limited stuff like this is a killer. 10 point life swings and late game direct damage stuff for limited is huge. Ever had a Blaze in draft? A Soul Feast? A Lava Axe?
The trap is an added bonus. You can keep a couple in your sideboard if they have some lifegain stuff, and the 2 you have main boarded might get tripped and become nearly free. Really good card.
People who think this is a Baneslayer Fog need to be a little more creative when evaluating cards.
I apologize for the length (I tend to need to follow my train of thought to the end before proceeding to the next, resulting in overly long posts, papers, and monologues in conversations) and for the copious amount of parentheses.
it not only negates baneslayer for a turn but also gains you 5 life, slows the clock a bit, giving you time to dig out your doom blade.
Actually, no it doesn't. If they attack with Baneslayer, you lose 5 life and they gain 5 life. So, when you play this, you'll gain 5 life and they'll lose 5 life, exactly negating Baneslayer for one turn.

it not only negates baneslayer for a turn but also gains you 5 life, slows the clock a bit, giving you time to dig out your doom blade.
What? Why is this hard for some people to grasp? I'll illustrate with an example.
I'm at 20, my opponent is at 20. He attacks with Baneslayer Angel. I'm now at 15 and my opponent is at 25. I play this, I gain 5 and he loses 5. We're now both at 20 again. This is no better than Fog against her.
Also, against red or blue this card is essentially useless. Against agro this card is essentially useless. It's situationally very strong, hence, a sideboard card.
In limited, it can be good, but so is Craw Wurm, so play with it if you've got nothing better. Should have cost 6 to hardcast.
It's understandable blue control players would be shocked and in denial at the notion of this card, since their decks have been dominating multiple formats for an eternity yet they've curiously never once had to deal with any counter-hosers that weren't ineffectual, narrow CRAP.
Wow, this will be awesome vs Finks... wait, oh Knight of Meadowgrain... that doesnt work either... what does White really have post rotation to make this useful? I like the card a lot, because even hardcasting it you still have Consume Spirit for 5 at cost hitting a player.
Oh my god, this is broken!
Play this EOT before a cruel ultimatum, and see them cry.
True! But it would fit with the masochistic nature of us black mages.

C'mon.
ZEN needs to bring a lot more viable lifegain before this comes anywhere near a competitive table.

I would absolutely play this in any deck using B, as it is completely perfect for Baneslayer issues.
