From the Vault: Exiled Sketches
With the imminent preview release of Magic's From the Vault: Exiled, I figured it's time to take the wraps off this piece, which though it appeared on the Wizards website months ago, I refrained from talking about here. For starters, I couldn't post it here with its card name, and even today I still can't reveal that. But, the product will be previewed in a week at GenCon, so it's just about time. People seem to think they have this card figured out. We'll see.
Gallegos is just trying to mess with us. The card IS balance nothing else fits.
Have mana drain in FtV: E? Sure lets print a foil of a card that is originally worth $120 and see the price of the box set skyrocket into triple digits on the secondary market really great idea but no. The card is balance stop kidding yourselves and for it to be mana drain it would at least have some blue in there which it doesn't. The art doesn't fit the flavor of mana drain if you ask me.
Nice sketches though

"Yawgmoth," Freyalise whispered as she set the bomb, "now you will pay for your treachery."
I really hope for some new Foglio artwork in this set. They defined the early years of MTG for me.
Yeah, it really can't be anything other than balance.

I just want people who redraft to admit this:
"I can't draft objectively unless I am able to guarantee that I receive at least 3 rares. I am also better than most average/new players so I want to make sure that I get the best rares and they end up with worse ones. I care more about the monetary value of cards than actually playing the game for decent prizes."
It has to be balance, why else would so many of those sketches have scales shoehorned into them.
Its the equivalent of an artist revealing an art with a ton of those blocky aztec pyramids and smugly stating "I bet you think this art belongs to a spell that lets you draw three cards. We'll see."

And then the card is revealed, and it's an alternate art Ancient Ziggurat...

Last time I checked, Berserk was higher than Mana Drain and it's assumed to be in the set after the tips and tricks card. Besides, FTV Dragons skyrocketed into the triple digits as well, so it would be surprising if a set of broken cards didn't.
Sketches are shown once enough people have known the finished art for a while, not before.
Great find, CHA1N5!:grin3: Gallegos has always been one of my faves!
I like 4/4s for 7.
Being printed in this set doesn't make the cards Standard legal.
I do find it interesting what Randy said at the end of that blurb though.
Maybe not Balance?
And actually... if you look at the other sketch that could have been chosen, that doesn't seem like Balance at all.
Could it be we are all wrong?
Same with that second poster on his site.

I'd be shocked if it were Balance, but my head would fly off if it were Mana Drain.

Or worse, pyramids.

Honestly, on the promise of Balance and banned cards alone, you're already going to pay 100 bucks or more for one of these if you want it.
Magic dudes are so quick to judge...BTW, //gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Search/Default.aspx?name=+[justice">"]here's the cards in Magic with Justice in the name.
