Just as you say. As much as I agree some m10 art is really great, I must say I'm unimpressed by what I see here.
-Sleep's art is very poor technically and it's colors are just ugly. Rahn can really make terible art.
-Rise from the game is pretty standard and even not that great. There's no volume and no work on the light. the image seems competely flat and gives me no impression at all - at least Sleep can give me nausea.
-Gargoyle Castle is nice with good effects. Too bad it's completely wasted by the "void" in the clouds in the bottom left corner, which seems out of placen and the very weird shape of the clouds in general. The clearer (why is that? I have no idea) cloud on the right almost looks like rock.
-The gargoyle art is absolutely terrible. there's nothing remotely decent here.
Whoa. Sleep is poor technically? Do you know what that even means? Technically, it's perfectly fine. The composition is great, and the colors are great. The content is a tad boring, but it's very similar to rk post's style.
Rise is typical black card art, but the light and "volume" (again, throwing around big words) are not at fault. If anything, the color scheme here is lacking, as often happens with Critchlow and Swanland when they illustrate black cards (a victim of trying to convey the color black as dark and colorless).
The gargoyle token looked like Walker's work at first, and I'd like to hear why there is nothing "remotely decent" here. Texture, color, composition, everything is great.
I'm sure you were one of the people drooling over that bland Great Stag though, so who knows what kind of tastes people here have.

Wow. You may want to take another art class or two (or perhaps forget what you've learned in class). You're absolutely entitled to think that these arts aren't great, but the reasons you've given aren't at all sound. They're almost opposite of what's actually happening.

Damn you. Summed up my post in a fraction of the words.
Fail. It is "obviously" referring to MtG players themselves, IF anything. It really isn't referring to anything. Stop trying to find a link that doesn't exist.
I bet someone will link it to Yugioh or Pokemon soon.
by the time you're holding a real gargoyle castle, you won't actually be able to make out the gargoyle in the art... Still, it is quite cool. Not too fond of the other two.
Yeah, the only problem I have with the artwork is that it seems Bonner used up too much space on the desolate background, where he probably could have cropped it a bit and given us a closer view of the castle. The castle seems kind of small for the card, especially since it's supposed to be the central element of the picture. But overall, I do love the artwork, it's really not that big of a deal. The background may be excessive, but it does give the castle a really nice desolate look, which is probably what Bonner was going for.

What we're doing here is akin to taking the text of Moby Dick, locating specific words therein, rearranging them to create a passage from Fight Club, and concluding from this evidence that Tyler Durden is based on Ahab.

I thought he was talking about how people get hooked on WoW and don't want to go back to their real lives, and sunlight, and stuff like that.

Heh. Yeah, I was floored by that post and had to respond. Then I saw yours and thought you did a better job of refutation.

I write mainly horror/scifi/fantasy type short stories. Please read and feel free to send me feedback.
I like Rise from the Grave especially of the three.
I think the quality of art in this set is towards the higher end of the spectrum. I'm liking a lot of the black and red artwork I've been seeing.
Rise from the grave is amazing.
And I'm biased toward Gargoyle castle because it has a gargoyle.
Guildmaster Jarad
It's possible this could have been a result of Wizards' nudging. i.e. a land that has no color affiliation should clearly look desolate and empty.
