Wow, so Standard will actually have good cards now instead of bad versions of good cards.
I know several people who refuse to play Standard due to its low power and seemingly heavy focus on the combat step, who now might actually start playing Standard if this trend of printing good cards that aren't creatures continues.
I was thinking a bit more, but now I think that with Incinerate gone, Green regeneration could be a theme in M10. It's classic and I think it would be really good. Maybe Wizards might be pushing regeneration?
Bolt is most likely a common or uncommon. I doubt they would be that cruel to players without their set.
Who doesn't have a set of Lighting bolts? I mean, every casual player to competitive should have bolts laying around someplace.
If you don't honestly have a set already, they can be had for 50 cents each at any local card shop. Anyone out there selling them for more than that is just being a jerk and trying to ride a price hype that doesn't exist. Lightning Bolts are plenty, and I'll bet some of you have them in commons boxes you haven't looked in for years. I just went to look through my old boxes and I've already found 7 revised bolts and two Japanese bolts.
It's great Lightning Bolt is coming back, I'm more excited for it's impact in Extended rather than T2 however.
In the MWS world, for many players, winning also makes you a noob.
The same applies to:
-Knowing the rules.
-Netdecking.
-Not netdecking.
-Using old versions of a card (yeah, it has hapenned to me: "Ugh... ugly pic noob")
-Knowing English.
-Using phases.
-Countering spells.
<@MarkRosewater> THis is a secret we've carefully guarded but for this chat I'm going to spill the beans.
<@MarkRosewater> Some cards in Magic are better than others.
<@MarkRosewater> Ssh, don't tell anyone.
Im glad the old school stuff could finally be seeing a reprint, but if ball lightning and lightning bolt are back on the scene, blue should get some sort of fast counter to thwart off early threat, as most people seem to think. instead of a straight up counterspell, since its been deemed 'too powerful', how about something with a bit of a higher cost like FoW or Arcane Denial? There was a counter out of Masques that was sort of like force, i cant remember its name at the moment, it was remove a blue card, island, and pay 1 life i believe, would that be more fair?
Iona is a monster when she shuts off the entire deck/all their ways to deal with her. In multiplayer you can name white and get her doom bladed or name black and she goes to work at the farm. Not so good.

Lightning Bolt hsasn't been 50 cents in years. SCG had them at 3.50 long before anyone even considered that they could be in M10 (Like over a year ago). If you can find them for 50 cents anywhere, buy ALL of them.

Force of Will? Are you serious? Hmmm, maybe it wouldn't effect Standard so much. I still think Counterspell is more classic blue so I'd rather have it back. I really don't mind as a red player. I think every color is going to get 1-2 iconic and strong cards so Counterspell might not warp the metagame as much as you'd think. Mana Leak, Rune Snag or Remand seems just as awesome though.

If you're paying SCG prices for them, you're getting killed. Playsets regularly go for $4 - $4.50 on eBay.

FoW would get raped on the secondary market, not to mention, it's bad in formats without turn 1 kills. Daze, while a lot less unlikely, doesn't strike me as something they'd throw in a core set when they, at the same time, are trying to simplify the game for new/casual players. The same actually stands for FoW, as well.
As far as I am concerned I have to say that to me the flood of red decks right now is absolutely annoying. They are just getting stronger with every set coming.
And on the discussion of whats blue getting : No matter what they print, it will be a jawdropper or two. Magic has to have a balance between aggro and control and look at control these days. They losing basically all their tools this fall. There will be blue bombs. No question!
Another interesting note on Bolt : It is another way to deal with Planeswalkers !!
just told a friend...his response? "That's silly."
I agree. Flame Javelin was pretty freaking awesome at 2/2/2/ The bolt just seriously outclasses everything else. Hopefully this means Wrath of God is in as well...seeing as Wrath outclasses all other white removal, but is much more a "staple" in Magic's history than Bolt ever was. :/
How is this okay? I don't think the removal spells have been this efficient in T2 since like... ever? I just hope that this isn't true. Incinerate is already really good. Why is this happening. I really don't see a reason for WOTC to do this.
Incinerate will fall with 10th Ed., so expect Lightning Bolt to come take its place.
Besides that, we have Path to Exile as being a creature removal for a single mana. It was time for Lightning Bolt to be back.
Mono Red will be back to the scenario. Bloodbraid Eld + Ball Lightning is just awesome.
What's happening to this world...
Seriously, bad idea.
But so were planeswalkers, imo.
Planeswalkers, a bad idea? Planeswalkers, as a card type, have been relatively balanced, and added good flavor to the game. None of them, as far as I am comcerned, have been OP (save, maybe, Ajani Goldmane, at the moment), and they are all at least okay.
Lightning Bolt is an exciting addition to the set. It shows how badly WotC wants M10 to succeed. I also like how this reveal has led to all the speculation over where WotC has drawn the line. If Lightning Bolt is no longer too good to reprint, then what about X, Y, or Z? My favorite supposition has been that they would reprint Force of Will as a rare. It was done online a drove pack sales pretty heavily. It is a fan favorite. It si appropriate at a higher rarity, etc.
Anyway, my point is that I like this reveal not just for the card, which will be fun to play with and against again, but also the speculation it is creating. Specualtion is my favorite part of the Rumor Season.

I would not even begin to claim a "flood of red decks" is in Standard. Between B/W and G/W tokens dominating Regionals, and still being reasonable contenders in Standard, the only flood in red decks you claim to see is in because of the rise of Faeries in Standard.

So was Incinerate and I really doubt that it is reprinted alongside Bolt.
Blue is going to get either Mana Leak, Counterspell, Remand, or Rune Snag. Then they will be getting an awesome blue creature or spell like Cryptic Command or the new Djinn.

What's your basis for claiming Cryptic Command as an M10 reprint? I'd probably throw Rune Snag out the door on getting reprinted in a core set.

Given the crazy pricing of some cards in Standard, I doubt that the current price of FoW would change. $25 seems to be acceptable for a decently powered rare blue counter in Standard.
An interesting thing about yearly core sets is that they can do EXTREMELY ballsy things like this, because the set rotates out in 15 months. This won't have interaction with the block after Zendikar.
They aren't 'stuck' with certain cards in standard, and for M11, they can print/reprint cards that are ANSWERS to current issues in standard, assuming that set will be developed closer to release like M10 was.

I just think Remand will be before Counterspell ever will...

Red is getting too good. Last week-end at PTQ Austin a huge number of people played R/B. I can't imagine those decks containing Bolts in them.
They better reprint Paladin En-vec!
