At this point, I would say Counterspell, Mana Leak, or some really good instant card draw...but I don't think anything is off the table at this point for M10. Lets see.
If they're sticking to a one drop power theme, brainstorm works for me. But the overall point I'm getting at is this: Lightning Bolt + Ball Lightning + Bloodbraid Elf = VERY strong. And post rotation, blue is going to need some decent counter magic to even have a prayer -- and I believe Counterspell is on the same power level as Lightning Bolt.

I don't have any hard numbers on this, but I'm targeted more often than a black guy driving a beat-up sedan with a broken tail-light and no license plate, and Cy's well aware of that.
Some of my favorite magic memories come from casting Lightning Bolts (usually backed by Chain Lightnings)...this would be a welcome addition to the set. My question is, what burns goes into the set along with it, and what rarity does this go to? Would Lightning Bolt at Rare be unreasonable? That would likely put it's value in line monetarily with the existing printings...

Is it unreasonable to assume Dark Ritual would be reprinted? It seems on the same powerlevel as Lightning Bolt, and without a viable storm combo in standard, I doubt it would be broken?
We already have a Sword to Plowshares in standard. Now we have Lightning Bolt. Both are some of the most overpowered low-costed cards in their respective colors.
Not reprinting Counterspell would be an error.
Absolutely. If they're reprinting Lightning Bolt, they have no reason to not reprint Counterspell. Maybe in Zendikar and not M10, but if standard can tolerate Lightning Bolt, then Counterspell is 100% justifiable.
Counterspells annoy when they come in masses, sure. But the people don't understand why they're annoying: The blue mage can select WHAT to counter.
Yeah, everything thats dangerous.
As far as blue goes, it pisses me off that people only see blue for counters. If anything, there should be only three functional counters in standard at a time in standard. blue does OTHER things. Card advantage, bounce, mill, and stealing; And probably some other things I missed. (weenie swarming? I forget.)
They really should never had let countering get out of hand like it did- I would have preferred Mana Short like effects coming back over counters.
It's understandable blue control players would be shocked and in denial at the notion of this card, since their decks have been dominating multiple formats for an eternity yet they've curiously never once had to deal with any counter-hosers that weren't ineffectual, narrow CRAP.
There is. Can you deal with Rhox War Monk or Wooly Thoctar with Lightning Bolt? No. Can you deal with them with Counterspell? Yes.
I think Counterspell is a bit too powerful, but Manaleak is fair, even with Rune Snag.
I agree control need some tools, but you can deal with almost anything with Counterspell. Reprint Mana Leak and/or Rune Snag and it's a deal.
Considering post rotation the only playable countermagic would be Counterspell (assuming it's reprinted), it isn't "too powerful." It deals with Wooly Thoctar and Rhox War Monk the exact same way Mana Leak or Rune Snag would.

...*slowly growns a deep, burning rage as he realizes m10 better bring some hella good countermagic, or "controling" and "blue" won't roll off his tounge in the same sentance*
any confirmation on the rarity yet?

Actual Truth:
"You heard it here folks:
Anyone who disagrees with "Jack from NC" is an idiot."-The Dead Weatherman
The bad thing is that bounce was nerfed, mill doesnt work, stealing is overcosted, and card advantage.... well.... wizards hate all the playable card advantage spells, so they create overcosted pos.
My guess is one "quality" reprint in each rarity for each color (which would discount Rit thanks to Duress)... which would explain why some insiders raved about the set so much. I just hope we have some more jaw droppers in other colors. It's so easy to think Counterspell + Bolt! But what would white get? Surely not Swords...
How about bringing Dark Ritual back then? Do we know if Hypnotic Specter is returning in M10? Cause I know from my early days of magic that the BOLT was ever the perfect answer VS the Hippie.
Ritual is the exception to 'reprinting a card deemed too good' as it isn't a black effect anymore. And if you think they will make a red ritual...yeah no.

White has Path to Exile, which is not far from Swords. I can't think of a quality reprint off hand (maybe Savannah Lions?) though.

I agree with him halfheartedly- Sanity Grinding isn't very reliable. they need a Glimpse for UUU to run alongside it- That alone (or a UUU Manashort) would bring back mono blue/mill.

To urza.... how many tournaments have you won it it? mmm?
It top 8'd at my regionals, and the kid is going to nationals for playing the deck.
I lost to grinding again at a PTQ this weekend. The deck is the most competitive mill deck in years, you can't try to argue mill is currently weak.

Yeah hadn't figured the pie in my equation, damn rumor mill, these threads are fast! Can't think straight...
Ok and Duress is in, I guess that puts the final nail in Dark Ritual's coffin...
...
But someone just said this may be a translation issue with Russian site, and quoted examples of recent mixups...
Primary and only casual rule: "any rule that is fine for the most part of the playgroup, is a fine rule". So any further thread with: "if somebody uses/does .... in a casual game, is it ethical/ok?", read the answer above.
- Being a "Johnny/Spike" means you like self-torture. You win often in casual, so everybody hates you; you loose often in competitive, so you hate yourself.
Don't doubt random people saying cards that can be in the core set are in the core set. As soon as the thread was made in speculation I knew it was true, Shoe is a legitimate poster.

They have a red ritual its called seething song.. Is it overpowered i think not, but dark ritual is quite the overpowered house. Cast a 5 mana black spell on turn one no thank you:rolleyes:
remand is another possibility aside from mana leakspell snare and also quash quash I might add would rule against red burn. also hinder isn't a bad option considering that cancel is in Alara.

The only one of those that would be sufficient to keep up with M10 power levels is Mana Leak. And cancel isn't playable.

Cards purpose is not necessarily tournament. It's really rare that it is, in fact.
Thats what im saying, its good, for casual decks, but once you match it against the current Standart meta... mill doesnt work that well. For mill to work it needs to remove a massive amount of cards... not just a few, or a random quantity (wich... most of the time, doesnt even surpases 5-6 cards milled)

Are we being too hasty now?
Anyways... i dont see why blue cant get counterspell for M10.
Nope.
Considering the other 'mixup' were obvious placeholder names for arts, and these are all full cardnames of several arts...yeah legit.
