Menarch, Ixidor, Akroma, Phage, Kamahl, Toshi Umezawa, Daiyamo Kanda (misspelled), and his daughter were all non walkers that were important to the stories that they were in before we got Neo Walkers. And they never Ascended to PW status.
Correct me if I'm wrong but just to add on to that comment...
The Lorwyn/Shadowmoor Saga didn't have any planeswalkers as main characters.

Sorry if that's incorrect, i never read Eventide.
You are correct. In fact, there were no planeswalkers involved in the story at all. It's the first story in a long time to not have some kind of plane-hopping involved.

Oh your correct I haven't read Morningtide to Eventide so I wasn't sure if they did plane hopping. Also i was making a point that before the Neo-Walkers we didn't see the characters I was mentioning become walkers themselves. Only Jeska (who is Phage so I'm wrong on her) was one of those characters to become a 'walker. Also lets not forget that Karona, False God wasn't a PW but just a regular goddess.
Or, rather than a person or other individual being the "villain", the force of conflict in the story can come from an event or outside force.
How often are Magic stories remotely that intelligent?
We only have to go to Lor-Mor, where the "outside" force of conflict is the aurora. Nonetheless there is a clear "good guy" and "bad guy", bad guy loses, world returns to balance. TS block is all about the multiverse unraveling and needing healing, but again there are "bad guys" taking advantage of it and "good guys" who thwart the evil. In Kami the universe event was caused by one selfish "bad guy", Ravnica has a host of "bad guys" but a definite "good guy" to oppose them all. Is there a single amoral story among all the novels?
If precedent means anything, there will be a master villian. He may or may not be a plansewalker, and if he's not, he might get a legend card. Also neowalkers may not be the only thing capable of hopping planes. But given the pattern WotC is headed down for now, a villian mastermind is unlikley to be a planeswalker card.
This is the reason i think there will be 10 walkers, 15 mythic rares, Overlord Hellkite is said to be Mytic rare, #1 super person-god-whatever of each plane will be Mythic and the last 10 will be the full combo of planwalkers possible airgo 5+10=15 but that just my reason.

I was referring to Alara alone - not M:tG as a whole - unless the "villains" are entirely on the defensive (which is a bit boring) they've got to have a means to navigate between the shards - and considering the lore to MtG says you either use Phyrexian style technology or you're a PW.... well, the opposing force sensibly has to be a PW, barring Phyrexia popping in to say "Hello" which seems really doubtful - or them using another reasoning to hop between worlds, but with the recent PW concept push seems unlikely as well....
This is both the pre-release and launch party promo. No more seperate promos-for now. I personally like this it saves the trouble of going almost 100 miles to my nearest cardshop for a pre-release when we are having a release tournament here in town just to get the promo.
Ajani Goldmane:
A native inhabitant of Naya, this Leonin male planeswalker specializes in Protecting others, inspiring the souls of others, and justice magic. Ajani's signature weapon is a double bladed axe which represents his brother who was murdered. After he was unable to reunite the pride, Ajani's spark became active and he sought revenge for his brother's killer. When Ajani became aware of other planes outside of his own and the clues he found led him to other planes, the search for his brother's killer found him in the middle of a much grander scheme that he is just beginning to perceive. As Ajani's quest broadens, so do his powers, as his violent emotions empower more powerful magic.
...no? Ajani's a native of Naya and both illustrations feature him in traditional Naya leonin garb rather than his more cosmopolitan outfit that he wears on his Lorwyn incarnation. Ajani Vengeant is definitely right-after-sparking Ajani.

Ah, all right, I must not be reading it right or something. The art IS indicative of Goldmane being older.

"Ajani Goldmane" the card has no affect on the magic storyline and thus does not exist at a specific time. The quote you mentioned shows his surprise at the realization that there are other planes, which means that Ajani Vengeant is Ajani's first attempt at walking.

Can we safely assume that Ajani Vengeant is an older version of Ajani Goldmane?
