I'm glad they're doing it. It was fun in the early stages of Magic when it was about flavor, but when they started focusing on creature types, it was time to change. I'm sorry Flavor guys, but this time, function beats flavor. You got your merfolk though, so be happy about that.
Edit: My favorite erratas (or Non-Erratas)
Scarecrow is now a Scarecrow (along with a Scarecrow Soilder)
Nameless Race becoming "Creature - "
I still want all constructs to become contraptions. It would mess with our minds like nothing before it.
I aam absolutely going to devour this list tomorrow. I can't express in human language how Happy I am that they've finally done it. And, even though this is the Internet and all, don't expect to hear any complaints from me. I love it already.
In general, I am very dissapointed by this update. I loved the Un creature types. I used them whenever it didn't matter, but I had to chose a type. That, and the inconsistancy bugs me. Goblin Artisans becoming an Artificer but not Welder? Volrath not becoming Human? Why not?
Nameless Race's race is, apparently, nameless. It's losing its type.
Yeah, that's a funny little in-joke, I thought.
Edit: And Bird Maiden is not a bird (as printed) or a maiden (as printed and as it is now). It's a human. THAT makes NO sense.
She isn't a bird. "Maiden" isn't a supported creature type any more for the same reason "Brothers" isn't. In the story upon which the card is based, it's a human woman who is able to fly, thus the human type.
Goblin Artisans becoming an Artificer but not Welder?
That is a good point. EDIT: Or it would be, except that Goblin Welder is an Artificer now.
Volrath not becoming Human? Why not?
Presumably because the modifications made to him by the Phyrexians left him essentially inhuman. (And he is capable of completely taking any form he chooses, and "Human Shapeshifter" doesn't make a lot of sense....)
What is sad is that it would appear that ComPACT's hopes are dashed.
The only thing that bugs me is that so many cards are being updated to human, but not getting a class, even though they could. The first one that caught my eye was the Bodyguard from Alpha. It could be a soldier, but they just made it Human. The fact that nameless race now has no race kinda makes up for it imo. Other than that, I like this. I actualy went through the list of lost types and checked them all. Even as a flavor nut, I can see all of the lost types fitting a pre-existing, supported type. It is a job well done.
Yuck. Another mess-on-top-of-a-mess, which was piled on top of some random erratas and erroneous updates. It's like an oops-athon, and it just got five times bigger.
1.a girl or young unmarried woman; maid.
2.a horse that has never won a race.
3.a race open only to maiden horses.
4.an instrument resembling the guillotine, formerly used in Scotland for beheading criminals.
1 out of 4 says she is a human, 2 out of 4 says she is a horse, and 1 out of 4 says she is an execution device.
While I do think this is great that they are doing this, such as giving Cavren Harpy the creature type harpy, and I still don't get why she is a beast. But there are three creature types that I think should of stayed and got a little more love:
Penguins - Because well... PENGUINS!!! plus who doesn't want to build a penguin deck.
Dinosaur - Because well... I like dinosaurs.
Chicken - Because if we can fight battles with cowards, why not chickens!!!
also at Darem I would be honored if you allowed me to put your maiden quote in my sig.
Whenever playing "real" Magic (like, you know, with cards and dice) from this point on, we'll either have to keep a massive printout handy, or a computer with an internet connection. Either that, or don't play with any cards that have anything to do with creature types.
I suspect a common occurrence will now be:
"I play ______."
"Oh... how does that affect my _____?"
"Hmmmm, I dunno. The cards are clear on it, but I know in September 2007 they changed most creature types."
"Okay, so we don't know what happens?"
"Nope."
"Uh, alright. Let's just pretend the cards are correct, I guess."
Just wanted to point out to anyone that hasn't seen it yet, that Seton's Scout is now a "Centaur Druid Scout Archer". As far as Ican tell, it's the first and only creature with four types
RIP Maidens, Nobles, Waiters, and Ladies of Proper Etiquette. On a serious note, I think Enchantress should have stayed, as it's a flavorful type with a clear mechanical niche.
Ok so they removed power errata because "cards should work as close as they can to the printed text" and then they go and change over a thousand creature types?!?!?!? I mean tribal is nice and all, but I don't agree with this update, cuz, you know, it makes a bunch of cards work different than printed! So yeah, if you run Engineered Plague sideboard, you need a really big printout.
Sacred Prey is changing from a Beast to a Horse, which is crazy. There are two creatures in its art, a horse and a generic-looking beast, both sort of glowy. If they insist on making it a Horse it should at least retain the Beast type. This is the only Beast in the game besides Skyshroud Ridgeback that costs just G!

Added 8 types, killed almost 150, leaving the total of types at 216, which isn't as much as I would think.
Some of the changes are kind of funny...obviously.
Case in point, check out the 'monger' cycle of Masques. (ox monger, boar monger, human monger)

On topic though, it is good they have done this. It was weird have so many different one-of creature types.

Now watch them reverse all of this 18 months from now. ...as they always do.
Errata, errata, errata, it's getting to the point where the rules (all of them) aren't on the cards anymore. Sigh.

Unfortunately, they elminated people-of-the-woods. That type had so much potential... Kind of/maybe/a little/not at all.

um.........
aren't maidens humans?

So one definition pegs it as a human and the rest make no sense. I guess maidens are humans in that context. (And according to the artwork.)
