You won't believe this! I just went shopping for Easter (hmm asparagus with egg and butter!). And loo and behold: I noticed one of the trainguys walking in my own supermarket. He was accompanied by a beautiful long blond woman with sunglasses on. They must be living in my neighbourhood.
I couldn't resist talking to them. He panicked a bit when I told him I had overheard him discussing magic cards. He said that wasn't allowed to share that information. The lady stepped in, and asked to leave her guy alone. If I would, she would persuade him to give me some extra information.
Ofcourse I agreed, although I'm still not sure if they are pulling my leg.
Anyways, here is what they gave me:
Magus of the Vineyard
Human Wizard
At the beginning of each player's precombat main phase, add to that player's mana pool
1/1
Veilstone Amulet
Artifact (rare)
Whenever you play a spell, creatures you control can't be the targets of spells or abilities your opponents control this turn.
He also named the Artifact Creature – Spellshaper that produces Metallic Slivers as Sliversmith, and mentioned that there are rare lands (including a future-shifted land that is like a painland but it gives opponents a life instead of you losing one)
I absolutely love the scenarios that you've just happened to be in... better than the rumors, in my opinion.
Some good stuff for us all to chew on though. I think that Artifact could be a very tricky little peice in some decks. Especially with the No Money Down Instants.
If true (amazing scenarios Hunter, and yet still believable), the magus could be insane. True, it helps your opponent first, but in the right deck it could be nasty. A 2nd turn solifuge is bad enough, but Avalanche riders and such are ever worse. Must say, I'm liking this set so far.
The artifact is pretty meh.

For refrence I'd say these are most likely true since we have a credible source here. Also vineyard is kinda always been a unnoticed card especially recently so would be an odd one to make up.
The artifact is also very very plausible and seems like something wizards would make.
If that wouldn't be you, Hunter, I would totally call fake on it (c'mon, dont expect anyone would believe this story from some random stranger)
I think the Magus rocks. Now thats an good aggro two drop. Combine this with Turn 2 Blood Moon and your opponent will have some serious color troubles (and Mana Burn along the way)
Otherwise, I dunno. It seems to be very powerful and at least has potential. It does not need to be played, though. But I think it does a good job doing letting control players play their Spells in their Turn - Okay, Turn 2...

Hunter, I went out looking for asparagus last night too.... and not only did I not come home without card info (you *lucky* guy) but I came home wihtout asparagus, all that I found at the grocery store looked completly inedible.
Now, tell me more about this "with egg". I've never heard of serving it that way, what do you mean?
Good cards.... I remember the vineyard being a nice kill effect for mono green and for green black hand destruction back in the day... so *fingers crossed*. The artifact.... exactly what green didn't need.... (kids).
Like the other two cards mentioned in another thread I am taking these as real (enough).
Eladamri's Vineyard and Mystic Veil for all your creatures every time you play a spell? Wow. Why dont you just make it harder for control to deal with stuff WoTC?! :xd: Damn evil MaRo!
Sooo yeah...blue kindly requests zero casting cost counter spell, to deal with these shenanigans. Because green is too strong =(. If you do the math in a real game:
[card=Dismal Failure]"Two magi could trade spells all day and never crown a victor.
The real battle is not one of power but of will.
If your confidence breaks, so too shall you." —Venser[/card]
Hunter, you might have just got someone fired! I mean if it's someone associated with wizards, how many do you think have hot blonde girlfriends or wives? hahahaha. I like the scry cards best, these are just set filler (assuming they're real of course)
The problem I see with Magus of the Vineyard is that it can make some very degenerate play for you if the stars are right but you are giving your opponent the mana boost first. Meaning if you play this first turn your opponent is going to have at least 3 mana at their disposal on their first turn (helloo dark ritualish sickness) or 4 or even more on their second turn. Do you want to give this potential boost to them? Worst case scenario is that they play something incredibly ridiculous at that early stage of the game and you are out. Most likely they play something and just shock your mana trooper away giving them sick advantage and you are left with nothing but land in play. But I'm not saying it's a bad card. It could turn up to be very very good but I'm afraid that you will end up shooting yourself in the leg too many times with it.
ok think this through.
turn 1, you play magus.
opponent "shocks" your magus, and has 2 gg. unless he's playing r/g not much 2 colourless does. maybe a signet? that's the best.
this is only bad if you're playing against a heavy green deck. and even then, it'll basically be a mirror so it's not like green is gonna remove the magus. so you'll get your chance to abuse it, and you should be able to abuse it more just because your deck is built around it.
this is similiar to howling mine, but nowhere as bad of a drawback. in fact, against the right deck, this magus is practically a free shock on their turn. that is a far bigger help then a possible risk vs a gruul or mga deck. imo.

If the artifact is accurate (which I am sure it is) it makes any aggro deck stronger, to say the least for control decks. When I first saw this I was like 'was this a plant for Platinum Angel slated for tenth', I wonder? I mean realistically, its a good card and failry costed artifact (that can be tinkered for). There is synergy here between the artifact and counterspells vs. creature removal and counter baiting. Its auto veil when you play something so you can, barring mass removal, be safe from anything your opponent has in way of control.
Definatly not a crap artifact.
More to the point, it wont be played as much as I would like to lead on but, its definatly something I would play.

Hrm. Magus of the Vineyard is very interesting. I'm not sure what to make of him, but first impression is he's going to go a long way for stuff like turn 2 Stone Rain, turn 3 Cap'n Tickles, turn 4 something-else-unfair. But of course, being symmetrical has its drawbacks. So we'll see.
The artifact is beyond worthless I think. A true crap rare. It 'looks neat' but does nothing when it comes into play and will only be effective against B/R decks with a ton of targeted removal.
I think they mentioned that the future-shifted land is like a painland but it gives opponents a life instead of you losing one
About the asparagus: The Dutch way to eat asparagus in spring is with a warm, perfectly hard-boiled egg and melted butter. One mashes the egg on one's plate and pours the butter into it, then sprinkles it with freshly ground pepper and nutmeg. With the left hand, lift the end of the asparagus and use the right hand with fork to scoop up some of the egg sauce and the tip of the asparagus.
I love how half of the two threads that Hunter posted today are about the scenarios he has constructed, and not about the content of the cards themselves....
@Magus of the Vineyard
I never played when Eladamri's Vineyard was legal, or played, so I have no idea how viable this will be. I guess my biggest fear for a Turn 1 3cc spell for no colored cost would be a morph creature, but for now that only means Akroma, Angel of Fury. This card would be deadly in the mirror, so I have no idea how constructed playable it may be. Sometimes the drawback is worse than the benefit. I could see it being played in the sideboard vs. a dedicated blue counter deck, since they will have few ways to handle it, and you will get more benefit than your opponent.
@Veilstone Amulet
Just play around getting 2 for 1'd, and don't play unnecessary artifacts. Reminds me of Dream Chisel. When I first saw that card, I fell in love, then realized that it didn't really help me at all...just play more morphs and better cards. (yes, I found Magic during Onslaught...)
Edit: First to name the new painlands -- "Gainlands" FTW!!!
well it seems to me that Magus is more proof of the shift back to mono-color deckbuilding. double green might not be a good thing for the opponent playing a deck that is single color black or B/U. sure it's great to have GGB 1st turn... but what if everything in your hand costs 1U, BB, 2BB, or something similar? then it becomes 2 burn!
Vineyard with feet is pretty good for MGA, especially considering that if the opposing deck can't spend all the mana it is a mini shock.
From a gameplay stance the other card is good, but quite boring and most likely quite aggravating to play against. Nice idea, but thankfully we have split second in the format, it won't be that ridiculous. Also, quite nice that they didn't stop your own targetting :p. Imp's Mischief is somewhat useful if they play this and removal, it is the only (or one of the only ways) to throw spells(sans mass damage) at your opponent's ledgewalker and ascetic guys.
Still, you could play Magus of Vineyard with Creeping Mold, Mwonvuli Acid-Moss and Rolling Spoil to recreate Green LD in standard. With Acid-Moss and some luck you could even get out some 6CC monster on on third turn

These are excellent ideas. I've been looking for a mono-green control build and you may have just provided me with one. That was always the problem with the green LD, waiting until turn 3 to use them at the earliest. Vineyard man solves this problem. To the draft table I go!
Yeah, that sounds pretty good! I'll have to give it a go. :munch:A sort of genuine, do-it-yourself hollandaise sauce. I might add a dash of lemon juice for the full effect...
Oh? I untap with my Djinn in play? Then I'll cast High Tide 5 times, let the copies resolve, cast Remand 3 times, the first and second targetting the original High Tide, and the third targetting the first Remand. After the stack empties, I'll cast a Turnabout with 1 replicate, and triple-remand again. Net Effect: Draw 4 cards, Islands all produce 4 extra blue, lands untapped. Repeat until I draw Vision Charm and proceed to deck several hundred players.
Er, isn't the magus a little broken? Turn 2 Solifuge? Can any control deck in standard handle that? This is totally unfair unless they print counterspell for one mana.

Yeah but this forces every control deck to be at least u/b or u/w, and possibly with a splash. Not to mention the draw-go variety will be getting shocked every single turn. In addition after the wrath they could play out an additional solifuge, or I dunno, their entire hand.

Magus of the Vineyard is good at first sight, but the more I think of it, the more its just bad most of the time. Tron getting free signets or comulsive research for . Aggro helping the ***/Dam player hit it turn 2 or 3, thus negating the mana boost. I really like the design though, as it will break MGA or just look bad, depending on the opponents hand, possible sideboard card actually to go for burn wins if Dralnu is rampant.
the magus is insane againts control if they dont have removal in their opening hand .. i mean ... wat can u do wit him .. on 1st turn wit gg in ur mana pool - ok:
Condemn ... Last Gasp (leaving one more mana in pool GREEN) ... wat else ..
but u get Sulfige on 2nd turn ... (and u can not counter it) ... and on 3rd turn - if u do not manage to counter suthin - i think u will die ...
this is hell fo controlls ...
but against agro - it is usless - cas u just give him boost on his next turn ... )) ..
but - this buries controls ... im dissapointed (((

You would play it first turn and always get second turn Winter's Grasp, Thermokarst or Creeping Mold, then play Stampeding Wildebeest + Wall of Blossoms for some new LD cards and fast beats. It's a Shame functional reprint of Wildebeest, Stampeding Serow already rotated out of standard since it would have been nice with Carven Caryatid.
