This should be a very interesting block. I think this has potential to break Magic as a game though. With each new block/set, Wizards (IMHO) is trying to do too much.

I'm for one for wizards to stop naming sets after cards, but Onslaught, and Morningtide are great names for sets. I think as long as it's a descriptive and creative word to show how the set feels it's ok. This is all just IMO, though.
Guess we have to assume something is up with MT. Does this thread serve a purpose other than "Look, Morningtide is the set after Lorwyn"? Nothing seems obvious to me.
Sure. It's a forum to whine, *****, piss and moan about the name of the set. Hadn't you noticed?

I was blown away that the announcement was just the name of the set/release dates and that was really it. What a waste of an Arcana - maybe lazy instead? Even more amazing was seeing that this thread had grown to four pages to discuss that and that the majority of the posts where pretty much the same - "Awww man, another set named after a card!"
I think the general consensus amongst most is that card names for sets is not a "good" thing. Personally, I don't mind if they do that. Coming up with creative set names has to be difficult when you think of all of the great names they've used on cards. I'm sure they've even blown away a couple of great names on some lousy cards too. As most have probably wondered, I too think this set could have some interactions with the graveyard. That's a big assumption at this point, but I wouldn't be blown away if it turned out to be true. Ravnica will be rotating out with the introduction of Lorwyn. Bye dredge, nice knowing you. Withered Wretch and Tormod's Crypt and even Extirpate are providing enough hate for graveyards, so as long as they make sure and keep a balnce on things, then graveyards could make a big appearance in this coming block.
This is a lot of speculation mind you, but what more can you really say about something a simple as a set name and release date if you don't marinate on it for a moment?
It really doesn't bother me that they're using words that have also been card names as set names, especially given that there's a lot of evocative card names out there.
Morningtide's a fine name.

I am willing to bet my collection that Frozen and Solid are not on the same card. For example, Frozen Tomb and Solid Wall.
If Frozen Solid is not reprinted, you are aware that I'm quoting you in my sig for eternity?
I don't really see what the big deal is, naming sets after little-known cards. It's not like it diminishes from the set in some fundamental way, and it's not like they're going to do it all the time- I think they just figured Morningtide was a cool name, and just so happens to be the name of a card.
The theme of this block, given the names "Lorwyn Dusk" and "Morningtide", seems to be day and night. DO NOT read anything into the names other than that, please. I hate it when people say that Morningtide will have a lot of graveyard hate just because of the eponymous card.
This reminds me of when Ravnica I believe was codenamed "Control" and almost EVERYONE thought that it was going to be the comming back party for counterspells that are nuts! Names a name and that's all there is too it, usually has very little to do with the cards in the set to my knowledge.
No, instead it gave one of the greatest tempo hosers ever, Remand.
But to address some points...
Wizards has said many times that after Oddysee, they were not so fond of making sets unbalanced in the color distribution. There is no real reason why they would go back on their decision like that, especially when it makes such an impact on design. Give it up folks, it's going to be a normal distribution of pie.
Also, if this meager announcement does anything for the rumur addicts, it further compliments the "four set block" idea. No card count, no slot of the block....they are being rather secretive, and it doesn't seemto be working out to their favor. Given that April is a few days away, does anyone put it past Wizards to give an update on Lorwyn? I think they'd try to trick us like with Unhinged, posting an Arcana with updated info, such as card count, set 1 of 4, and the expansion symbol.
Also, quit your whining about sets being named after cards. No one cares. I'll bet you that if Ravnica was named Squire's Domain, it'd still be amazing and a hit.
Yeah, I'm a little disappointed with the naming of a block after an already existing card. However, I didn't know it until someone pointed it out. Additionally, the card is not terribly famous (of which Time Spiral and Future Sight probably are moreso), so I guess it's ok.
The naming after existing cards is getting very annoying. However, Morningtide sounds like an awesome name. Dripping with mystery and flavour.
It sounds like really awesome laundry detergent. In all seriousness though, are people really bothered by sets coinciding with past card names? I'd guess that most people don't mind or even notice until it is pointed out.
I think the most interesting thing about the names of the blocks that no one seems to be mentioning is "What can this name imply for the block, mechanics wise". Why is the set being broken down into "times of day"? Does the plane of Lorwyn (assuming it is the plane's name) have an extremely long day cycle? Does one "day" actually take up several of our "days"; could a single day be 200 hours long, for instance?
Maybe it is connected to the inter-block themes? Time Spiral block's mechanics are related to time in the game. Perhaps Lorwyn block will continue some of this (maybe cards that do different things depending on whose turn it is?)
It's salvation. If this thread were about the huge dump Mark Rosewater took last night, it'd still be four pages. Hell, we'd probably be up to twelve on the strength of GRRR >:| ROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOSEWATER.
I think the general consensus amongst most is that card names for sets is not a "good" thing. Personally, I don't mind if they do that.
Agreed. Nobody is going to be complaining about this when find out more about the set.
This thread is purposeless. You can't draw any conclusions from the name (Onslaught was about red tap effects guys!), you can't comment constructively on it, and speculation about the lack of information goes in, uh, the speculation forum.
Making a productive post in here is impossible, unless you're me and therefore a ****ing pimp.
Guys. There are tens of thousands of magic cards. Almost every single cool idea for a name that doesnt directly use the name of a plane will already be a card.
Edit: There was a lot of speculation just after the 'Lorwyn Dusk' term was discovered that Lorwyn would be the oft' mentioned 'Plane of Endless Night/plane going into endless night'. WoTC had a poll some time ago for "What plane would you like to see" and this was one of the high rankers.

Broken/incorrect web page - Magic: The Gathering Feedback
From: Gregoire (*******@videotron.ca)
Since the early switch to DST two weeks ago, some people have been
unable to access the articles until 1AM EST. The best explanation Ive
seen so far is that because some servers have not been updated to
reflect the DST change, even after two weeks, the people who are
assigned to that particular server have to wait until 1AM to be able to
access the new content. This happens apparently randomly, but Ive seen
complain in the article threads almost daily indicating that others are
experiencing this problem.
Please relay to whomever it concerns that taking several weeks to
correct a minor problem doesnt reflect good on WotCs ability to manage
its online assets. Its also annoying for those of us staying up until
midnight to read the articles.
Hi Greg, thanks for writing in. We are aware of the issue and the
technical team has been working quite hard on correcting it.
Unfortunately, my understanding at this point is that this was mostly a
symptom of more serious issues with one of the servers, so the overall
issue may not be solved for a while yet. The good news is that the
server in question takes far less load than any other in the group, so
the overall number of people impacted each night is far less than you
might expect given the kind of traffic our sites get. That said,
hopefully everybody will get to see the site at the same time soon. I
apologize for any inconvenience in the meantime.
Is anyone else getting just a little suspicous that all the early, and incomplete info is planted ( I smell maro ) to draw attention off of Future Sight.

Not really.
MaRo is SUPER excited about FS, and I have good hopes for it as well.
They just announced it now, lacking the 'surprising' parts of info, so it wouldn't be 'as obvious' they left it out, methinks.

I find it interesting that we got this info one year to the day (of the week) after the Dissension Split Cards "Special Announcement" in Arcana. With Future Sight coming out exactly one year after Dissension, I bet Wizards was trying to bluff any of us who found the Arcana pic early into expecting a FS card image. At this point, it's safe to say that any "Special Announcements" in the next few days will be Future Sight previews.
Unless of course they go all wildncrazy and decide to announce "Afternoon Delight" or whatever comes next.
Arcana used to be one of my favorite features on the site, sharing trivia and background tidbits, but these days I rarely even look at it. No offense to the amazing artists, but the Wallpapers and Sketches just don't appeal to me as much.
Arcana used to be one of my favorite features on the site, sharing trivia and background tidbits, but these days I rarely even look at it. No offense to the amazing artists, but the Wallpapers and Sketches just don't appeal to me as much.
Wallpapers suck... I mean, is it that hard to make a decent wallpaper once in a while, not a rectangular picture not fitting the whole screen with a discolored larger bleed of the same piture around every single time?..
And on topic... I dunno if we can glean much from the set name, except that if they make opposite factions by daytime, it would be tied to mana colors. They tried to create the conflict based on other principle in Kamigawa, and it failed miserably.
I mean, I think Kamigawa block was one of the best blocks ever made. But not from play/mechanical side. It just never felt like a war of divines vs mortals during the game... So I don't think we'll see the non-color-aligned "light vs dark" standoff or anything like that.
And as for the name being used for card before... Who cares? At least, in case of such name -- it's generic and flavorful on itself, not because it was used on a card.
Hey does anyone remember Rosewater (I think, if not another design dude) talking about how they were trying to design something so there was a "night" and a "day" state and certain cards played differently based on the state? If I remember correctly this eventually morphed into the flip cards. Anyway, what with Lorwyn being called Dusk and this being Morningtide, makes me wonder if they haven't revisited the basic idea. Maybe the Bibi//Sleur (Ruel invitational card) will preview such a mechanic. Thoughts?
EDIT: Actually the more I think about this the more it jives with other info. If I remember correctly the idea was scrubbed because it was very complex and required that large numbers of cards be devoted to the mechanic. THe large number basically because you need cards that interact with the game state and then cards that will change the state. Well, if this really is a four-set block then the large number of cards required is somewhat offset. IF course, given time it is easier to reduce the complexity of a mechanic, which was the other knock.
It works though. People suggested the fix. Just have cards that can flip twice. Night and Day was phasing originally, not Flipping, and was confusing since it alternated on a grand scheme, not by card.

Lorwyn: Dawn
Morning Tide: Day (or morning)
Set 3: Dusk
Set 4: Night
If there is Dawn and Day, than to have a a symmetrical set, you'd need 4, and the other two would likely be Dusk and Night.
This also fits in with the discussed Night/Day mechanic that MaRo talked a bit about.
Seems really interesting to me, I can't wait for this block.
TS and RAV blocks were both excellent, and in my mind, are pretty equal in greatness (guild mechanics make RAV a bit better). Maybe Lorwyn can blow them away with a crazy Night/Day thing and 4(four?!?!?) sets.
Just a note here, but Lorwyn's full name is "Lorwyn: Dusk". It's because of the use of Dusk here and Morning in MorningTide, that mechanics using Night and Day have been suggested.
Oh? I untap with my Djinn in play? Then I'll cast High Tide 5 times, let the copies resolve, cast Remand 3 times, the first and second targetting the original High Tide, and the third targetting the first Remand. After the stack empties, I'll cast a Turnabout with 1 replicate, and triple-remand again. Net Effect: Draw 4 cards, Islands all produce 4 extra blue, lands untapped. Repeat until I draw Vision Charm and proceed to deck several hundred players.
