I started collecting Magic the Gathering cards because of the art. From what I have seen so far of Ravnica art, I get the feeling that there's going to be a big hole in my pocket for the next two years at least

Hang on, I need my gibber-to-english dictionary. Ah yes, here it is,
"There is no royal road to science, and only those who do not dread the fatiguing climb
of its steep paths have a chance of gaining its luminous summits"

...I'm not sure. Yes, the art is very nice, but it has a strange feel to it. When I look at it, it reminds me of Charn from The Magician's Nephew. I just get the feeling everyone's dead, which is totally the wrong vibe to get from a cityscape.
These lands just say so much. The whole view of them really makes me go up in Ravnica. The detail of the art is so immense. They are very different from eachother and yet both breathtaking.
The birds on the plain art the wide midspace make me feel there are lots of memories stored and makes it calm.
The dense art on the island, as well as boats and balloons give sense of activity on the island.
Both also capture the idea well that this is a *huge* city, they both fade off on the horizon.
I really like the lands that they capture different emotions so well, in contrast to lands from other sets, which focus more on setting (plains has a wide free area, island has a lot of water etc) then on emotion.
It's hard to explain, but I feel these lands so far (and a handful in the past) are probably more designed by emotion first, then setting, instead of the other way around (what they usually seem to do).
those lands are friggin awesome! i mean look at the detail and incredible creativity in them. i want foil versions of all of them! just so that they look cool in my decks.i just love both the arts, they set a really good mood, tone and visual of the incredibly sci fi type of ravnica. i dont why but th eisland reminds me of " sherlock holmes in 22nd centruy".

I especially like the fact that the Plain appears to be a governmental/business district. You can just look at it and imagine there being banks, court houses, and office buildings for politicians.
As was mentioned earlier the Island does have a Venice feel about it. It also give the feeling of commerce. You can look at the picture and imagine that the boat being used to ship goods.
Overall I think that the artists did a great job creating the feel for White and Blue on a world that is enirely covered in a city environment.
I agree they don't look very plains/islandy, but the art is incredible. I would like to see more panoramas like they did with the CoK lands, though. Those were friggin' sweet, IMHO.
What we're doing here is akin to taking the text of Moby Dick, locating specific words therein, rearranging them to create a passage from Fight Club, and concluding from this evidence that Tyler Durden is based on Ahab.
I think that it's important to realize that Ravnica seems to have a tremendous focus on cities and civilization. A plains anywhere else seems to be a 'plains in the city' in Ravnica..same with Islands, and probably all other lands. To that degree, these lands make sense, even though they are unusual. But then, they're absolutely beautiful.
I like the idea of "Plains" and "Island" (etc) being more of just an identifier of the type of mana gathered from it, rather than an actual description of the land formation. It's the natural progression of the flavor of the game.
Having said that, I agree with rancored_elf that the "OMG this is the best ever!!!" thing experienced every block is really pretty contrived. Being excited because it's "the new one" is a good thing, being blinded because it's "the new one" is a bit overboard.
I kinda like the whole color-focus over land-type focus in these two. I mean, yeah the "plains" does not necessarily look like a plains but it does show aspects of White (and pretty much *only* White). I suspect that this is one of the things that MaRo was hinting at as a focus change. As long as we are limited to specific "land-types" as actual literal "land-types", creativity and design space will suffer. Really, these are just mana sources for the set that count as basic. Maybe we should change it from "Basic Land - Plains" to "Basic Land - White"? Gameplay-wise (which is the majority of my concern with cards anyway) the latter makes a good deal of sense.
Which reminds me, on a tangent: You guys read that new column about flavor they started? I hate it -- it makes teaching new players so much harder. First thing I try to do with new players is to get them to disregard the pretty pictures and flavor text and fantasy names and get them to focus on the game mechanics. All I need is some "official" sounding guy undermining that directive.

Maybe WotC have decided to do the PG-13 verison of Perdido Street Station. Which would be cool.

I really think they should have just made basic lands, exact same as Island/Plains/Mountain/Swamp/Forest except just change the name for this block...
Wouldn't be overly hard to do, and would make more sense with the flavor of the block.
The art looks fantastic, but I don't like how theyre supposed to be basic lands. It just doesn't fit.
