In this week's Into the Aether, it's revealed that the rules for Phasing will be changing (it no longer triggers leaves play abilities) and creature types will be updated. These changes will take effect with the rules update for Ravnica, and of course effect paper Magic, not just MTGO.
In addition, online Mirage will have foils, color coded rarity symbols, and theme decks.
Time toss all those Phasing + Wormfang Manta + Soulgorger Orgg decks...
And as for the creature type changes: WOOHOO!!! As someone who has a Poison Counter deck, this makes me frickin ectatic!
But even better, do you all realize what this means??? Every time an old set is rereleased for MTGO, its creature types will all be updated. For Tribal-loving nuts like me, this is AWESOME!!!
I guess we will see creature consolidation like they did for Ninth edition.
My guesses to some of the creature changes:
Mtenda Lion and Stalking Tigers will become Creature-Cat
Haunting Apparition and Skulking Ghost will become Creature-Spirit
Sabertooth Cobra will become Creature- Snake (they said so in the article)
Locust Swarm will become Creature-Insect
Crimson Roc will become Creature-Bird
Pyric Salamander will become Creature-Lizard
How exactly does this qualify as a rumor? I absolutely hate it when people start "rumor" threads about facts revealed on the official site. If you want to discuss the article, there are places for that.
The Breathstealers were an ancient cult of fanatical religious assasins from Urborg, allies of Kaervek (Inq 18) (Cards: Breathstealer, Nocturnal Raid, Breathstealer's Crypt). They were known for their ability to kill with complete accuracy and utter silence. Only the Breathstealers guild is said to possess both the knowledge and the desire to summon the dreaded Spirit of the Night. They worship this Spirit. It is the ultimate honor for a Breathstealer to sacrifice himself to become a part of the Spirit of the Night made manifest. They can work minor magics, including controlling certain creatures (Duellist online).
I always found the nightstalker creaturetype confusing. (espacially with the Shimian Night Stalker and the Portal Nightstalkers added to the mix)
I therefore think the Breathstealer will become a human assasin, Urborg Panther a cat assassin, and Feral Shadow a human wizard assasin (flavorwise is clearly stated not to be a spirit, yet).
Now Spirit of the Night. There's a legendary Spirit, if you ever saw one.
Karoo Meerkat is too small to be a beast. But Meerkats are part of the Mongoose-family, and that's an established creature-type (cf. nimble mongoose, blurred mongoose

Stuff like this gets put in the Rumor Mill all the time. I assume the mods allow it because not everyone bothers to check the official site. And who can blame them, some of the writers are incredibly boring, Bennie Smith being one of them.
BTW, anyone else get the strong sense from Randy's answers that they've all but made it official that every set from Mirage to MM block will be released online? :grin2:
I am welcoming the changes with open arms. Hopefully this trend will continue and all of the old creatures will be updated in due time. My only concerns are that people who don't play MTGO and only play casually will be like "That's not a _____ its a ____" if one tries to play a deck using the creatures new types.

Yeah, I have a problem with that, too. I figure, though, that anybody who plays in casual and cares about the creature types will learn them, and so long as they don't play against that one blockhead in every group who won't admit when they're wrong, it should be alright.
I'm thinking that maybe they could make "mock-up" cards in Gatherer. So Mirage version of a card would have two pictures there, one as the card was originally printed, and other as it looks now after online re-release.
Human? There's absolutely NOTHINg human about that thing! I really doubt it.
Yes, that was still bugging me as well. However, the backstory clearly stated that the Breathstealers were an Urborg Guild of Assasins with limited magical skills, and no spirits.
Maybe it's an an Illusion, then.

I wonder if they'll change the types of old Walls. Like Wall of Roots could be a Plant, etc.
That would make sense. With Defender in the rules-text it's no use to cling to the Wall-creaturetype. A wall being a creature has always been idiotic.
But what of these others? The alternatives are limited or likewise are more artifacts than creatures
Blistering Barrier: Creature — a big pile of fire?
Floodgate: Creature - flavorwise it's clearly a wall or dam
Mindbender Spores: Creature — Fungus
Sunweb: Creature — Web? It really doesn't make sense as a creature
Wall of Corpses: Creature — Zombie
Wall of Resistance: Creature — maybe an Illusion?

Hmmm...*looks up Mirage in Gatherer*

Brushwagg -> Beast?
Crimson Roc -> Bird
Crypt Cobra -> Snake
Giant Mantis -> Insect
Gibbering Hyenas -> Hound
Goblin Elite Infantry -> Goblin Warrior
Goblin Soothsayer -> Goblin Shaman
Goblin Tinkerer -> Goblin Artificer?
Hakim, Loreweaver -> Human Wizard
Hivis of the Scale -> Viashano Shaman
Horrible Hordes -> Gnome
Karoo Meerkat -> Beast? (its not a Cat and its not a Hound...)
Leering Gargoyle -> Spirit?
Locust Swarm -> Insect
Melesse Spirit -> Spirit (it has Spirit in the name, so it shouldn't be an Angel per current R&D policy)
Merfolk Raiders -> Merfolk Warrior
Merfolk Seer -> Merfolk Wizard
Mtenda Lion -> Cat
Phyrexian Dreadnought -> ???
Purraj of Urborg -> Cat Warrior
Pyric Salamander -> Lizard
Rashida Scalebane -> Human Solider
Sabertooth Cobra -> Snake
Sea Scryer -> Merfolk Wizard
Shauku, Endbringer -> Horror?
Sidar Jabari -> Human Knight
Skulking Ghost -> Spirit
Spirit of the Night -> Spirit
Stalking Tiger -> Cat
Talruum Minotaur -> Minotaur Warrior
Taniwha -> Serpent
Telim’Tor -> Human Knight
Viashino Warrior -> Viashino Warrior
Vigilant Martyr -> Human Cleric?
Zirilan of the Claw -> Viashino Shaman (I think he's a Viashino, its hard to tell cause he's so tiny in the art)
Zuberi, Golden Feather -> Griffin Lord? (Griffins wouldn't be Race/Class models but his ability is definitely Lordish)
Plus all the other guys who need Human added to their creature type.

Leering Gargoyle won't change it's type. There are several other gargoyles allready http://gatherer.wizards.com/default.asp?first=1&last=100&term=gargoyle&Field_Name=on&Field_Rules=on&Field_Type=on&setfilter=Allsets&colorfilter=All&typefilter=All&output=summary&sort=name

Yes, they stated that Mirage will not be available for redemption when it comes out online. (Which is obvious)
