Regeneration is actually one of the most mis-played abilities in magic. Lots of new players THINK they know how it works, but very few actually do. The reminder text is a VERY good thing.

I agree. The tapping part confused people on these board when they saw the reminder text.
That is a testament to how necessary the text really is.

needless to say, anyone who plays Lure on a Skyhunter is pretty bad at magic.

The only time this matters is with lure affects, nothing else. And it is simply a clarification, the rule works exactly the same way.
Basically, that's all that needs to be said on this and nothing more. This isn't that major as I can only really pull 7-8 cards (some of which don't have names... just sorta general properties) out of memory that this 'change' effects. It's not major, it's just something that's nice to know about for future refrence.
Therefore, if a player attacks with a Leonin Skyhunter enchanted by Lure, a Tree Monkey that "can block as though it had flying" is required to block the Skyhunter.
did i have the choice before the wording change or would the lure automatically take over the "may"-choice? i mean, the way you put it, it certainly sounds like i had the choice as 'it may block'...guess this is a ruling question but it's thread relavent.

It's not that we are a nation of stooges and idiots...it is that we are a nation of the lazy and morbidly obese-physically, mentally and spiritually. http://www.counterpunch.org/sullivan08292005.html
...will Israelis and Americans...ever know that Palestinians...are risking thier lives...that Israel's violence...aggression against Palestinians should be met with non-violent, non-aggressive resistance? http://www.counterpunch.org/
put as many keywords on cards so they can be spammed up with useless reminder text and thus intimidate the new players. look at how regeneration got overly cluttered up. seems like a way to drive people away to me.
not to mention there's no room for flavor-text. that's actually one of my favorite parts of the card. i love to read really funny sh-z on the card. like, "all she does is pee the bed"...

There's a thread on Wizard's rules forum (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=471352) where what is actually going on with this change is unknown. Russell Linnemann, the boards Net Rep, had ruled that it worked like the spider had "flying" & "didn't have flying" at the same time.
Quote from Russell Linnemann »
It looks like there are some misunderstandings here. Previously, for a creature like Giant Spider, you chose a "mode" for it to block in. You chose for it to block as a flier, or for it to block as a ground creature. Now it can do both at the same time, automatically, with no choice involved. Think of it as an additional capability.
Then someone posted that Jeff Jordan, the MTG-L mailing list NetRep, had posted a different ruling on the MTG-L mailing list.
Quote from Jeff Jordan »
The words "Giant Spider may block as though it had flying" gave
people the mistaken impression that the player had a choice in
the matter. Such a choice is only offered if the card says the
*player* may (or may not) do something. All the wording really
means is "the rules allow the Giant Spider to block as though
it had flying."
The new wording uses "can" and does not address any choice
players might make while blocking. Treat the Spider like
it has flying when you determine whether a block is legal.
A bit later, Russell posted this:

It turns out that nobody actually agrees (now) what the intent of the change was when Carter ordered it late last year, and Carter isn't rules manager anymore. We'll figure it all out. The one thing that is certain is that a Spider now must block a lured flier (barring other restrictions/requirements). Beyond that, it's all under discussion, and there are no MaGo-approved answers to other questions yet. Stay tuned.
Someone asked why they didn't just ask John Carter what he meant by the change & got this reply:

We are Once we get an answer, MaGo has to figure out if he's going to implement it exactly that way and what changes to CompRules he needs to make for whatever he decides.
So looks like what the actual ruling for this change is still up in the air.
(& yes, if you didn't notice, in the credits for the latest rules on the WotC website has Mark Gottlieb is the current Magic rules manager.)
It seems to me that the old wording was actually better flavor-wise than the new wording. Spiders being the clever hunters they are; it seems to me they wouldnt try and tackle anything they were sure they couldnt handle. A spider should really have the option of hiding from anything it doesnt want to spar with.
My two cents.
Although I suppose since lure is magical means of forcing it to block...
