Ugh, this is much harder than it would have been if the mechanic in some way resembled the art . If it was just the mechanic we had, and we didn't have to worry about the art, i'd have submitted Wandering Mind - a creature loses itself in thinking of some interesting idea and becomes oblivious to its surroundings, then suddenly snaps back to reality, but in the process, loses the idea. But, seeing as that does not resemble the art in the least, that idea gets nixed :slant:.
Having said that, I submitted Waking Dream, kinda similar in flavor to Wandering Mind, but more white-oriented. Thoughts?
I submitted "Astral Pilgrimage." Like a holy pilgrimage...the creature you sent is off into the astral plane, and you gain knowledge from its journey. It's not exactly correct from a continuity standpoint, but most card names aren't. I like the fact that it references Astral Slide, too.
How do I explain the girl? Maybe she's a creature in the astral plane, beckoning the creature or drawing it in. Or, she could be the avatar of a deity or sacred being of the astral plane. In sum, I'm not exactly sure, but the billowing cloak/hair definitely signifies a journey. It's a shame Otherworldly Journey's already taken, huh?
For me, I think of the flavor as "Random lady comes down, turns a creature to glowy stuff, puts glowy stuff in your head."
Therefore, I went with "Essence Tap".

Lord, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, the wisdom to know the difference, and a ****ing chainsaw.
I think it fits the art in the sense that the woman standing there seems to be an illusionary image within a sandstorm, then the fact that the drawing and then discarding of the cards is temporary or illusionary in that you get to see the cards/spells but if you cant use them they fade away (get discarded.
I must admit however, many of the names suggested here are of very high quality and I would be happy to see any one of them be choosen.
What would be unbelievably hilarious though, would be for all the MTG salvation readers to push for Cocaine as the card name, because we, the magic players, do make this card. If we demand it willingly enough, they'll be forced to print:
Cocaine 2WU
Instant (U)
Remove target creature from the game and draw cards equal to it's power. At the beginning of your next upkeep, return that creature to play under it's owner's control and discard cards equal to it's toughness.

Magic is a battlefield now? I thought Love was a battlefield.... wait Mark Rosewater is Pat Benatar?
I went with "Aether Dust." It seems that the women is using magic dust to draw something into the aether, where random crazy stuff happens. I figured that I had to tie the art in with the mechanic, and the art clearly contains mystical dust and the mechanic involves removing from the game and card drawing (both somewhat connected to the Aether), so there you go. It sounds catchy enough.
I thought it looked as if the picture was breaking apart, or diffusing and drawing cards is normally know as thinking or something to do with thinking.
I thought about "Temporal Dust" though then figured that temporal has more to do with stuff in play returning to hand and/or tapping.
When I tried to think of names which fit both the mechanic and the picture, all I could think of were existing card names like Otherworldly Journey, Mesmeric Trance, Journey of Discovery, etc. Then it finally hit me:
I think yall are submitting too many things that sound like older cards... I went ahead and submitted the first thing that came to mind when I saw the mechanic... ablution.
I had to note the irony in that. Older cards, like Oblation?
And why does Astral keep coming up? Lol. A lot of the names here are kinda DOA(dead on arrival) for not standing out whatsoever or just not sounding good. People complain about Kamigawa block names then submit stuff like "Astra...(*remembers [card]Astral Slide[/card[*, ah, thats where 'astral' is coming from)...l Projection of AEther Dust Cliche Just Move on Mr. Rosewater, Please". If you 're going to submit, may as well submit something that might win, right? Heh. (*is still annoyed the last 2 YMTCs had bad names that won through divide and conquer*)
that's not what happened at all. kamahl stabbed phage, akroma, and some old lady and they became korona. then korona got stabbed by her "prophets" and kamahl got drunk with a mutant centaur
I think that this has incredible flavor. I see the woman in the art as a metaphor for knowledge (or curiousity) luring a creature into a different plane/world to learn/explore. THis excitement causes the inital card draw. Then when the creature comes back from it's learning it is only disillusioned by it's search and therefore you discard cards.
I say we call it the illusionary worth of knowledge. something better, but along the same lines would be rockin'.
I think that the perfect name for this card is Solemn Deliverance.
Solemn meaning:
adj 1: dignified and somber in manner or character and committed to keeping promises; "a grave God-fearing man"; "a quiet sedate nature"; "as sober as a judge"; "a solemn promise"; "the judge was solemn as he pronounced sentence" [syn: grave, sedate, sober] 2: characterized by a firm and humorless belief in the validity of your opinions; "both sides were deeply in earnest, even passionate"; "an entirely sincere and cruel tyrant"; "a film with a solemn social message" [syn: earnest, in earnest(p), sincere]
and deliverance meaning:
The act of delivering or the condition of being delivered.
Rescue from bondage or danger.
A publicly expressed opinion or judgment, such as the verdict of a jury
So it's saying that the creature is being promised to be delivered from danger with knowledge only to be brought back and lose some of that Knowledge.
I think if enough people submit a name with the same word, they will notice that name is popular and then pick 1 or 2 of the best entries from each of the most popular name categories (as long as the name makes sense), like "Astral" Whatever or Such and Such "Dust". Then they will pick 1 or 2 totally unique entries, like Cocaine (best name so far - currently has my vote for official card nickname), and then 1 or 2 really obscure entries, like Gazarsgo's Plow (a few will understand, but will it be enough?).
the one i submitted was "Flickering Intelligence," though i doubt it'll cut the metaphorical cheese. i figured the mechanic of remove-and-return, unofficially dubbed Flickering, would work with a reference to the card-drawing aspect ("Intelligence").
Lots of good ideas on here, and some... well... a bit tired.
I submitted "Beguiling Quintessence". I think it fits both the artwork, and the mechanic.
Beguiling:
1. To deceive by guile; delude.
2. To take away from by or as if by guile; cheat
3. To distract the attention of; divert
4. To pass (time) pleasantly.
5. To amuse or charm; delight.
Quintessence:
1. The pure, highly concentrated essence of a thing.
2. The purest or most typical instance
3. In ancient and medieval philosophy, the fifth and highest essence after the four elements of earth, air, fire, and water, thought to be the substance of the heavenly bodies and latent in all things.
Plus, I think it has a bit more originality and flair than some of the throwbacks to older cards. Who says all cards that remove a creature then return then should be flickering or astral? Not that I begrudge those ideas, but I think the terminology of the game should be as evolving and fluid as the game itself.

"Here only miracles. Here, only the rising of spirit. And yes, love if it was pertinent (which it was so often); and sometimes bloodletting. But never the prosaic, never the trivial. Here the man who brought the strangest tale was the most welcome. Here every excess was celebrated if it brought visions, and every vision analyzed for the hints it held to the nature of the Everlasting." - Clive Barker's Imajica
I suggested Mist's touch.... Not sure if it has been suggested before (since it's a pretty simple name), but i liked it, and i think it matched the art (errrmmm.... a finger "touching", mist all around), and the mechanic as well (A creature gets lost on the mist generated by this "touch", then finds his way, etc...)

I'm digging Payment in Kind. It really does fit the card, and is quite creative on it's own right.

I do like Payment in Kind, though. Probably a little too esoteric to get chosen... we'll see.

I like it (I have to, don't I?) but I've already given my suggestion. Anyone else want it?
