I dont think its the fact that people are afraid of losing their stuff, its the fact they have had the experience of playing offline and dont see the attraction of buying the 'cards' all over again at some insane prices and having nothing (or very little) to show for it.
I think you're correct as to the reason. Its still silly, though. I mean, what do you have to show for cards in real life? A piece of cardboard with some printing on it that, in any modern set, thousands of other people also have. On top of that, MODO has many advantages over real-life magic, especially for tournament players. Not only does it connect you to people from all over the world, thereby allowing you to trade tech and tune decks, it also allows you to practice formats, such as limited, far more cheaply and easilly than you can in real life. Plus, if you're good enough to go near nfinite, MODO really isn't that expensive
I like the way the avatars and stuff look. I overall like the way the program looks. It seems like you can minimize/maximize your opponents stats window based on what you need, and that's kinda cool. The dockable windows are great too. As for the text "Hand", "Library", "Graveyard" icons, I don't mind them either way. However, with the layout they are showing, I do think that the text versions are a bit more aesthetically pleasing. It removes what would be a lot of blank space in that box, and also just fits the scheme more. As for the hover feature, yes, this could work great, and yet it could be annoying and a resource hog. We'll have to see. One problem I have with avatars... I like how small they look on there. Go look at your Vanguard cards. Those things are horrible looking. Its like they had them line up for a quick mugshot, and slapped them up with no touching up. They are blurry, out of focus, and generaly just not at the resolution in rendering terms that they should be for those cards. I really feel that they should have an alternative idea on those Vanguard cards, b/c as it is, they all look like utter crap. Very pixelated and Nintendo like.

New Rules come out for 1999 6th Edition... "THEY'RE TURNING MAGIC INTO PORTAL! THE GAME IS RUINED! EVERYONE PETITION AND GET THEM TO CHANGE IT BACK!"
New Rules come out for 2010 Edition... "THEY'RE TURNING MAGIC INTO YU-GI-OH! THE GAME IS RUINED! EVERYONE PETITION AND GET THEM TO CHANGE IT BACK!"
New Rules come out for *Reserved for something in 2020* "THEY'RE TURNING MAGIC INTO *currently "simple" game by the more "skilled" players*! THE GAME IS..." etc.
It looks really nice. The art looks great and really clear, regardless of the small size of the cards I don't use MTG Online, though. I like Apprentice (it is free after all) but I would rather just go play a game with one of my friends than use the computer. Still looks nice.
It coulda looked worse ya know! The programmers *try* to make a product that they think will be an improvement over the last generation. There will be a closed beta, and then some sort of open beta, so everyone who wants to will get to say whatever they have to say and *then* it should matter.
I've noticed the processing size increase too. its great and fine for a while, then it practically crashes my computer and gives me "virual memory errors"... i mean, why!? sooo so stupid.
I don't have an issue with buying digital cards, but I do have an issue with buying cards twice. If I could do all my testing and stuff on MODO and then play in a PTQ on MODO, that'd be awesome. However, I have to get all the stuff for my deck on MODO to test it, then I have to get cardboard versions to play with in the PTQ. Also, people say it's a great experience and testing resource. Sure. . . when I want to test my Rock or Scepter Chant deck for post-rotation extended on MODO, do me a favor and buy me the Deeds or Chants, because I know that I sure won't have the money to do that.
I love playing MTGO. The current client has a couple of issues but I can live with these. I would like to see them impliment multiple windows so I can have my board on one screen and the opponets on my other monitor.
Playing MTGO is much more convenient when you have 9-5 (more like 7-7) job. Since free time is quite limited. Plus from South Africa the cost of online boosters etc is stil less than buying the physical stuff.
Me and OneUglyHobbit just recently decided to go with MTGO and we're pretty happy with it. Drafts 24/7, online trading thing, no hussle with going to a card shop to trade or send through mail. If theres disadvantages to playing MTGO over MTG in real life, there's just as many advantages to playing MTGO over real life as well.
As a person who has no idea about MTGO, I was reading through the comments and was wondering why no one made any comparisons to MTGA. Then I saw the dates...

looks neat. but id still rather just buy real cards and not have internet "cards" you are paying for lines of programming. ill never get mtgo
You do know that the cardboard that the real cards are made of does not have anything to do with their value, right? Whether the abstract value of the card is tied to lines of coding or fibres of wood mass does not make it any more or less "real".
I'm halfway playing the devil's advocate here, because I'm kind of like that too, it feels a lot less stupid to pay big money for something that is made of molecules and can be held in your hands. I get that. But I also know that it's sort of an illusion. Digital cards are, value-wise, not any less "real" than digital cards, and on top of that they are easier to convert back to currency. So... yeah, but no.
