I've always been a little fearful that they might set up an ebay accoutn to sell promos.
For instance, they might print an uber promo - Force of Will anybody? - that would easily sell for 100+ on ebay, then they would give them out to judges AND print a few thousand that the company would list on ebay in playsets each week....Granted a playset would be only $500, however if they did that for a year that's $24 thousand dollars...for only one promo.
They could already be doing this now with smaller promos such as Balance. By only releaseing 1 or 2 a week they aren't flooding the market. But if said account is selling 20+ different promos, all worth 50-100 $ each, that's over $100 k a year...
I heard on NPR a while back that Wizards makes 300 million a year on Magic alone. They give out several thousand at each Pro Tour. 100k is small fries.
As for the bidding war on this first copy, someone (the winner) is going to be upset. The first copy of anything on eBay always sells for far too much. Remember Gilded Lotus? I saw someone preselling them on eBay before Mirrodin came out, before any other seller had them up. They were ending at $36 PER SINGLE CARD. Not foil. Now they're worth, what, a dollar? And they're just as Type 2 legal as they were then. Basically, never buy presales, and never bid on anything if it's the first of its kind. There will be more, and the price will plummet in a matter of days.
definitely. i saw one of these go for over $220. that's WAY more than i would pay. it's just a Sol Ring. i've got a Revised one, ripped some kid off for it, but it works like any other Sol Ring, including this one. and plus, the white border looks better in my Ultra Pro Dragon sleeves. i'm not interested in owning one, per se, but i agree that it is very sexy foilage.
Sol Ring is incredible.
I think it's just as good a promo as Balance.

Wow, that's pretty cool. I'd take Judge Balance over it any day though, first because it's white (:D), and second because it's got brand new artwork. It would've been great to see new artwork for Sol Ring as well.
While new artwork is fun, I dare you to come up with a better artwork for Sol Ring. I think the new border is plenty enough of a change to make it desirable.
Wanting one and needing one are two different things. Honestly, these will drop below a hundred soon. However, I can see these settling around $80 because of casual players. Now I know that sounds dumb, but I know casual players who like to pimp out their deck. The already have foil Stroke of Genius, the 8th Merchant Scroll and the like. Being able to have a playset of foil Sol Rings would give them more reasons to be envied (one of their goals). Just cause they're casual doesn't mean they're cheap. Once you get past the age of 18, the stingiest players are usually the competitive ones.
I would say both. Collectors see this as a card that they can't walk into a local shop and pick up easily, or ever open from a pack of cards. That makes it worth all that much more.
In response to RE:
Well spoken. Of course, if you wait too long, you end up with minimal supply, which does not bode well for those of us with budgets to keep. I think I'll just become a judge. That way, I get it without bidding!
But doesn't that come with the little drawback of say, having to judge?

it'll probably settle around 50-60 like the DCI balance, eventually...

[edit] it wasn't ryan lorenz who sold it to lindley, it WAS carter.
