This information comes from the same source that told me Verdant Force is in 9th. I asked him for more information and he agreed to give this to me. It's not particularly exciting but I'm posting it anyway!
Core Sets now come with "S-Series" cards (since 8th edition) which are cards that won't be found in booster packs, but nevertheless are legal in any format where that Core Set is legal. There are nine cards in the 9th edition S-Series:
It's the same as the 8th edition S-Series except Silverback Ape because Spined Wurm, Sea Eagle became Coral Eel, and Index and Goblin Raider were added.
As usual, nothing tournament playable.
The cards will be numbered S1/350 through S9/350. None of them will appear in the actual 9th edition 350 card set itself.
Vizzerdrix was already on that special list, so there was never any chance of getting that card. index was in the main 8th set and i got a few of them from random drafts.

I am looking for Date Stamped promos from Khans of Tarkir block so I can finish my set. Check my wants if you have any.
Currently offering 2 non-foil Kolighan's Command for a Date Stamped foil!
No more Coral Eel? Poor blue can't get any remotely usable weenies for limited. Unless, of course, it does. Goblin Raider had limited limited use as well, but perhaps this is a sign that there'll be BETTER stuff in 9th *gasp*. As I recall, the S-series was created for crap like Eager Cadet WotC needed for there "This is how we play Magic!" sets, didn't want to be alienating new players by telling them some of their first cards are illegal, but also didn't want to be alienating regular players by making us open Vizzerdrixes et al. As an interesting side-note, for some collectors, 8th Edition Eager Cadets are actually worth a few DOLLARS, because they were only printed in those stupid sets and are hence hard to find. *shrug* I think it's dumb too, but oh well, I'm just as glad not to have 8000 of them from 8th packs.
(And apparently against common sentiment, I actually LIKE 8th edition... it's my favorite base set since 4th, and 4th was only good for all the power cards they forgot to stop printing. *shrug*)
So then with the Eel, Raider, Wurm and index all knocked down to the Core Game, I guess that opens up four slots for four new commons... wooooo..

Yea that's the exact reason. After my sixth Trained Orgg I just stopped buying 7th edition all together.
Besides.. they had both Eager Cadet and Honor Guard in the same set.
No great losses, but Spined Wurm was actually fairly good in limited... I'm sure they'll replace it with some similar fat creature, but hopefully it will be a bit more exciting than vanilla fat.
Spined Wurm out for... Ravenous Baloth? Please? heh
Index out for... Brainstorm? Wouldn't THAT be nice.
Well, one thing I'd like to know is, if Force of Nature is back, that means Trample is back, and that being the case... will we see things like Yavimaya Wurm or that 4/4 Trampler for 3GG from Mirrodin block whose name mysteriously escapes me at the moment? Spined/Craw Wurms were fairly potent in 8th limited, so TRAMPLING green fat would be tehmazing.
Then again, we might just get treefolk. Ironroot, Redwood, Blanchwood... They want to bring back plant people to go with the Potatofolk of Ravnica (see the guy in the background of Dark Confidant).
*reads post* It's obvious that fatigue has driven me completely insane. Good night, all.
what does S-Series means? Do u only get them in starter or something?
Nope... only in the two-player precon Core Game that comes with a MTGO cd and the same cards in a new MTGO account. Or are they finally stopping that nonsense?

Hey all... I'm retired, not dead. Check out what I'm doing these days (and beg me to come back if you want):
I find it enteresting that after they banish the aqautic creatures that they re print corral eel. Hopefully they have changed there minds on the good old merfolk.
EDIT-They even said in an article that eel and octapus are going away in 9th.

Yeah, I do find it weird how they are reusing the Eel and Octopus when they said they weren't going to. Are merfolks coming back in this fashion? :p.
Index isn't horrible, there are actually some use to it. Having land trouble but have an Index? Use the Index and fetch out some lands :). Need a counter? Go fetch yourself a counter. Not nearly as good as Brainstorm, but I suppose you take what you can get.

if I need core set cards for a deck I will either have them already (in previous core sets) or will buy them and always black-bordered if there has been a black-bordered version
what core set card has no bb version?
I thought that was impossable.

I have no extendo-sig. Sorry, I'm just not vain enough to think someone will click on it.
isn't there some from portal and stuff in the last core set that never had a bb version except in foil? Portal 3 was white-bordered wasn't it?
I believe that's correct, Portal: Three Kingdoms was printed with white borders. This always confused me since it kinda goes against the "Cards printed for the first time in a language must be black bordered." rule thingy.

P3K was never intended to even exist in the US, let alone be tournament legal or have cards get reprinted. That's a big reason for no BB printing before the WB. If you want BB versions of this stuff, get Russian 9th when it comes out.
Also, Starter 1999 and 2000 were white bordered. Sadly, the only BB Vizzerdrix is 7th foil.

9th edition will have some good new cards for MTGO. While the real life players may already have their playsets of Verdant Force and Soul Warden, it will be nice for us online players to get a chance to use them.
As for the S-Series, I'm glad they're taking out Coral Eel and Goblin Raider from the main base set. Its usually a pretty bad limited deck that has to play either of those creatures, so hopefully there will be better replacements in 9th edition. There's not much to say about Index; pretty much any card they replace it with would be better.
edit: Actually, Coral Eel is probably being replaced by Thought Courier which would indeed be a much better limited card.
I find it enteresting that after they banish the aqautic creatures that they re print corral eel. Hopefully they have changed there minds on the good old merfolk.
the eel and the octopus aren't in the same boat as the merfolk...
Merfolk were the iconic blue creature type, much like goblins for red, elves for green, etc, etc... the problem R&D saw was that they were an aquatic race, which to them didnt make sense for a land-type battle... they replaced them with wizards as the iconic race...
they never said they would never not (re)print a card simply because it is an underwater creature... it just doesn't make sense to have the iconic race of a colour aquatic...
either way, merfolk are nostalgic and cool, and i would like them back... as for the eel and the octopus, forget they exist and move on... not like youll be playing at a PTQ and someone says "land, mox, eel, go" anytime soon...

I liked raider in red for 888 drafts. 2 power for 2 with no drawback is always playable in aggro drafts and red in the basic set is very conducive to that.
I AM curious to see fi they address the rarity issue in the s-series cards. There wer mroe vizzerdrixes (2) than some of the uncommons (I forget which two only had 1, I'll edit when I get home) and I *think* one of the commons had only one appearance as well. But the issue is, if this *only* way to get them, then these rarities seem incorrect as you will have more of the rares than the uncommons.
Secondly, they really should consider making some of these cards foil, rather than insert a non-random foil card that's not even relevant to the starter set (elvish champion). I think newbs would like foil vizzerdrixes. Personally, I'm just a retentive ocllector and bought them just to round out my set and will do the same with 9th.
I actually have a friend that COLLECTS Vizzerdrix (he has around 80 of those godless sons of ...), so I guess there'll be at least 1 person that is disappointed by the message...:evillol:
I collect them too. Sadly, I've only found about 20 of them.

I'd have to disagree. Raider (and his black cousin Spineless Thug) are both quite playable in limited; they aren't first picks or anything, but good filler for an aggro slanted deck's mana curve. Generally speaking, when they come out on turn 2, they'll be too busy turning sideways to worry about blocking anyways.
Coral Eel looks pretty bad, but honestly, a 2/1 for 2 isn't that bad for colors that aren't white and green. Particularly blue, who really has the worst in terms of aggressive weenies.
Index is unplayable in any format, IMO.
