I've always been a fan of Fellwar Stone because I play a lot of multiplayer. Fellwar Stone is basically a 2 mana Darksteel Ingot that can be disenchanted or deeded in multiplayer. Having it come down one turn earlier can really be a big deal.
These are the kinds of cards that it would be great to have more of in the hands of newbies, as they can seriously help Timmy understand the basics of mana acceleration as well as not being utter jank, like Star Compass.
First, lots of good weenies and equipment in Mirrodin... And then more good stuff in Kamgiawa like Isamaru... With Glorious Anthem still in 9th... And then Soul Warden...
Is Wizards trying to make the game go faster again? Even black is getting its fine share of nice weenies...
I can just imagine a player sitting with three plains, a mountain, and a stone, while the opponent is playing black. Great. If you need to hit that double-R, you should really have taken a mirrodin talisman.
Well the stone is no longer a powerhouse nowadays with the sole reason of so many better replacements out there(invasion cameos, mirrodin talismans, darksteel ingot?) but back in the day, it was a major key card in a particular deck. Hmm lets see what was the name of that deck? Ah yes ErhnamGeddon. *sighs* How I miss the T2 back in in '96

Hang on, I need my gibber-to-english dictionary. Ah yes, here it is,
Felwar Stone: This isn't bad, and you can use it the turn it hits play, unlike Star Compass. Its significantly better going into a multicolor block. Moreover, though, having this makes it fairly unlikely they'd print the Talismans, which then increases the likelyhood of seeing the pain lands again.
WotC: White Weenie STILL isn't tier 1? AHH! Okay, for 9th, bring back Soul Warden, Empyrial Armor, and Soltari Monk and Priest. There, that should do it. Heh, seriously tho, pretty card, but I wonder if they'll errata the ability to be a 'may'?

Except that this fall Mirrodin rolls out, along with the Talismans and other colorless mana producers from the Mirrodin block, making this the best option again, unless they reprint some of them in 9th, which I doubt they'll do.
i don't think felwar stone is supposed to be played...i think it's meant to be a hinty-hint-hint like sage of lat-nam was. i mean, come on: the sage is sooo incredibly sucky, the only reason the printed it was a heads up for mirrodin (and to give noobs card drawing for their blue artifact deck). the stone could be a "sage" for Rav. and i hope they don't change the artwork...
I believe that wizards doesn't have the rights to all of the old artwork from sets before..... Urza block I think? In any case, the art will be changed, but it will probally be a homage much like Icy Manipulator.
Yeah, but we knew about Mirrodin being an artifact block before we knew about Sage. So that isn't really why. I think Sage got in because they needed a card from antiquities, and with most of the uncommons on the reserved list, had to go to a common that was still in flavor for the color wheel. Although you're right, they chose Sage because of Mirrodin.
The theme for 9th is old favorites, so they probably saw a chance to being Fellwar back in place of Star Compass. It could very well be a hint for Ravinca I guess.
They didn't choose Sage just because of Mirrodin. They needed a card out of Antiquities, and if you look at the set EVERY NONLAND CARD mentions artifacts somehow. The set was pretty sucky, actually. Mirrodin only helped the selection in that, if Sage was EVER going to be playable in the history of the GAME, it would be when Mirrodin block is needed. Instead, we got a 'card advantage' card that even Skullclamp couldn't make good.
I believe that wizards doesn't have the rights to all of the old artwork from sets before..... Urza block I think? In any case, the art will be changed, but it will probally be a homage much like Icy Manipulator.
I really love fellwar stone's artwork, but if they have to change it, I just hope that it wouldnt be a letdown:cool:

Hang on, I need my gibber-to-english dictionary. Ah yes, here it is,
What we're doing here is akin to taking the text of Moby Dick, locating specific words therein, rearranging them to create a passage from Fight Club, and concluding from this evidence that Tyler Durden is based on Ahab.

Let's just hope it looks as good as the original after having the entire card except the stone itself Sharpie-blacked out.

Hey all... I'm retired, not dead. Check out what I'm doing these days (and beg me to come back if you want):
Fellwar Stone is a great card, if you are playing a multicolor deck against a multicolor deck. Which is what Rav will be all about. Could be fun.

Nick: I lay a swamp, tap, dark ritual...
Me: If you cast a hypnotic specter I'll punch you in the face
Nick:...ahh I take 3 points of mana burn
The reason I play black according to CrovaxtheCursed:
Fellwar Stone is pretty damn good with Shifting Borders, incidentally. "Here, have my depleted Tendo Ice Bridge/Forbidden Orchard/City of Brass. I'll take your Blinkmoth Nexus and start tapping my Stone for any colour."
I have been inspired Jedit. Now all I need are some orchards... If the oath players havent baught them all first! Back in the olden days I liked Fellware Stone, but now days it is fairly meh. I am seriously getting a suspicion that empyrial armour will be reprinted to make absolutely sure that WW becomes tier 1, and as an omage to SOK's hand size theme.
BTW- I LOVE MY PITHING NEEDLE AND TWINCASTS!!!SOK ROX!!!

The stone is certainly better than the card it is no doubt replacing Star Compass. So that is actually nice. Soul Warden is such a wonderful weenie. The first time I ever saw the card was in an 8 person FFA multiplayer game.
Of course, it ruled.

I would much rather have Guardian Idol than Fellwar stone. Maybe it's just me, but fellwar stone might as well say tap for a colorless mana. I'm thinking a 2/2 beatsick is better. Oh, and the best way to use Tendo is with Meloku. Return it after you tap it to make a 1/1 flyer. Then play it again.

It will be better than the Compass in constructed, but I think it will be worse in limited. Star Compass helps you cast spells with double colored mana in their mana cost. I know core set limited doesn't matter much, but its pretty popular on MTGO. It will be nice to have a Fellwar Stone for my 300 card singleton deck though.
I just hope Soul Warden stays common or maybe get bumped to uncommon. I know so many newbies that could have their white multiplayer decks improved by a four-of of Soul Warden. It's just that good in big multiplayer games.
I agree with the camp that hopes it keeps the original art, as well, the original art is really good.

Agree 100%. The art on Soul Warden is one of my favorites. It'd be tough to come up with something as good (for that particular card).
