My question is, where does the card go if you don't pay life? If it's optional, the card should get removed from game if you don't pay life, and it should be optional, and it should take away your normal draw step, and should be an activated ability. I would tweak it to look something like this:
Dark Confidant
Human - Spy
Skip your draw step.
Reveal the top card of your library.
You may pay X life, and put that card into your hand,
where X is the card's converted casting cost.
Otherwise, remove that card from the game and you lose 1 life.
2/1
This would definitely be rare, and they would have to do something with the card other than put it back on top of your library, otherwise it'd be stupid. Making someone pay X life to get the top card of their library, which they would've gotten anyway on their draw step, would be horrible. Something similar to Yagmoth's Bargain or Necropotence would be the best way to go, but it'd have to be toned WAY down. My version of it would make it playable only in scuicide black. Cards like Consume Spirit and Death Cloud bould be cheap to get though.
Rosewater's article on MTG.com today talked some more about this card, its official name is "Dark Confidant" and the flavor text reads: "Greatness, at any cost". I hate to be a broken record, but in a black weenie or retooled Machine Head this card is flat out insane. INSANE. Your curve in such a deck probably tops out at three mana, you can put equipment on the guy to make him tougher, and oh yeah, its not like theres no black cards that let you suck some life out of your opponent to refill your own. Rosewater also mentioned that the only change R&D made to the card was very minor and also made it BETTER, not worse, BETTER.
EDIT: Ah crud, just read the Xteen posts that mention the above info already, i'll go back to the not quite as fast posting as I thought I was corner now.

Yes, I'm quite sure that the union of Future Sight and Yawgmoth's Bargain is just what we need...
As is the mechanic seems quite good, with stuff like Viscious Hunger and all to gain life back. Drawing an extra two cards per turn for an initial invesment of 2 mana puts the card, in terms of draw power and efficiency, with some really powerful stuff. Whether or not it will be playable we will see (I think so), but at least it is incredibly powerful.

At the beginning of any upkeep, reveal the top card of your library. You may pay X life to put it into your hand, where X is equal to its converted mana cost. [Otherwise, put it into your graveyard... or bottom of library... or leave on top.]

Is it possible that the 'guild mechanic' of Ravinca will be included on this card? Perhaps that's what they mean by a small adjustment to make the card better, i.e: more interaction with cards of the same guild maybe?...
Some really nice ideas for improvments to this card being put out here, hopfully R&d doesn't botch this one up...
Couldn't reanimator decks abuse it? Drop this, stack your deck, don't pay for huge fattie, then reanitmate and procede with some beatings
Although to be fair, any way you cut this ability there is bound to be someway to abuse it...
That'd be about as broken as running Think Tank in Reanimator. And that's not very broken.

It's not broken but it is the outlet we Reanimators have been looking for in Standard and if it really is graveyard rather than remove(even though typically it's remove with Black), this is pretty solid. Extended will always have better options...
Look at other cards with that abilities, like Phyrexian Arena or Seizan, Perverter of Truth and you will find that they don't have a great amount of life loss for drawing cards.
If you draw the card at each of your upkeep, well that makes more sense to me and even a more playable card; with all of those drainlife you got out there, it is a good card anyhow for the comming T2.

What does IMO stands for?
IMO = in my opinion.
And let's look at Phyrexian Arena. 3cc 1 life per "round" (from the beginning of your turn to the beginnin of your next turn) to draw 1 extra card.
Seizan. 5cc. 6/5 with 2 life per round to draw 2 cards, but your opponent does the same.
This? 2cc. (beets both). X life per round to draw 2 cards. Think 4 life, if you're running black agro. Non-symetrical, and a 2/1 package means he can deal damage early, and chump him when you need to get rid of him. You can't do that with Seizan or the Arena.
Actually, the minor addition is more likely to be Ravnica related than a "may" slipped in there, considering that putting in the may is more like a major addition. It would completely rework how the card functions and in what decks it fits (ie any deck with black in it vs. aggro black only). Chances are all they did was make the creature type relevent. Which is fine because the card is awesome as it is.
Remember the minor change they made to Jens's card from multi to artifact? What if they amde this one multi to fit in rav, like UB for casting cost?
-K-Dogg
I suppose that would depend upon the deck... and your personal opinion.
My bet is that the change will be the addition "may", as has already been stated. I'd bet that the "may" will be in the reveal, not in the choice after revealing, though.
Phyrexian Arena tends to work better with the Top because Top doesn't really go in the types of decks that Maher's card does. Aggro decks want to be using their mana to cast threats and disruption, and if the curve is tight then there will not really be time to use the top. Also, Maher's card is worse than Arena in a control deck because: a) you lose much more life; b) it is more easily removed by an opponent; c) it is affected by your own symmetrical removal spells.
i have no doubt that the card will remain basically the same but will say you MAY pay life = to conv mana cost. maybe they made it into a 2/2 also. that would make it just SICK. thats my 2 cents though.

not as broken as you think. depending on the "mandatoryness" of the ability and how often its use(your upkeep or others) you would be dead in 5 rounds of turns if you used the deck shown b4 w/ the avg. CC of 2.117 depending on the rules of the card. that doesn't even count damage the opponent deals. I play MUC and I'm not countering something that kills you in 5 rounds when I can counter the stuff you get w/ it.
However, I will agree with u if its optional to put in your hand and it goes to the graveyard. because right now there is no counter you can count on consistantly to counter something coming out turn 2. In that case I'll move over to reanimator come Ravnica:biggrin3: .

Returning to the issue, if it's going to be like that, it surely be a chase rare for ravnica.
I hope for Ravnica not to have that "Guild" mechanic. It fells tacky and stupid.

You'd always draw lands, but never draw reiver demon off of it? Yeah. So maybe if you could onyl draw non-land cards... then you could look.
