the lack of trample is quite disappointing.
however i suppose it'd be a little overpowered for an uncommon were that true.
i still think black > green > blue > red > white.
the evasion of the blue one is good, but the butt is easily taken care of.
and the 6 power of the red one is amazing, but that 1 butt is something i'm awfully worried about, though i'm sure there're decks that'll accomodate all five.
I think all of the cards in the cycle will be very good in limited. Now. . .if we only knew what the sixth card in the cycle does. . .

I really like the artwork for this card. Plus, actually seeing it in the card face, all pretty and printed, make me like it even more than before. Yeah, this guy *may* not see play in contructed, but in limited, I actually prefer the beefer 4/4 body over a 3/3 trampler.
As for everyone who keeps talking about how geddon would help affinity more than ww, I think it's time to look to the future. Yeah, affinity will still be around for, what, another six months, but what about after that? I don't think they'd want to add it to 10th, but I'm willing to bet they made a compromise that fits into your hopes and fears as well as the comments from the article: although it was originally planned for insertion in Betrayers, they moved it to Saviors.
If geddon was in Saviors, affinity would have minimum time to abuse it before it rotated out. WW would have a year to exploit it and justify to development whether it was a good idea. It rotates out faster than if it was in the core set. It makes the article's comments true because playtesters may have felt affinity used it more than WW but really wanted geddon back, so printing was pushed back to a later set in the block.
The biggest thing revealed today is not the genju but rather that there will be 6! Also the name of the black genju is up on mtg.com if you wanna check it.

Legendary Creature – Human Designer (MR)
Brian Tinsman, Set Designer can only be cast during the third set of a block.

The more I think about it, I wonder if they made it 4/4 w/o trample instead of a 3/3 w/ trample to help distinguish it from Pulse of the Tangle. Granted, the pulse doesn't create creatures with trample, but it does create 3/3 critters.
Pulse kinda rewards you for letting your opponent keep their critters. Yeah, it could get countered, but in a worse case scenario, you have the option of chumping all day and creating a new critter afterwards. It those regards, it's pretty defensive, reactionary.
The genju kinda rewards you for keeping your opponent from having any critters. As long as they have critters, your 4/4 monster is gonna trip over those chumps all day long. However, if it had trample, your could just roll over the chumps rather than having to remove before attacking. In that regard, the Genju could be aggressive or defensive.

I think they made it a 4/4 without trample to distinguish it from treetop village. Otherwise they would both be pay 2 to make it a 3/3 trampler
Yeah come to think of it, i think that a 4/4 trampler would have been too good. It is good enough as it is, rather big and hard to kill. Plus green has plenty of big creatures anyway. I like this guy anyway.

My guess is the 6th card in this cycle will be enchant legendary land since Kamigawa block has a heavy legendary theme. Maybe the genju will give untargetability or something. Not sure what color they would make the 6th card because there are legendary lands of all colors.
But if you guys compare this genju with Living Terrain, the genju wins hands down. But i have to agree with most of you, this card will see a lot more play in limited, as in constructed there's a tendency for people having anti-enchantment spells in their sideboards, as i do.
Heroism on command, senseless violence, and all the loathsome nonsense that goes by the name of patriotism -how passionately I hate them!

This can beat for 4 on second turn. First turn Forest, Genju of the Cedars; second turn land, activate Genju, swing.
Sure you can have the 4/4 on turn 2, but what good is it if it's tapped? You won't be able to either attack or block with it since the activated land will be tapped to pay for the activation.
For the last time: the genju can be activated turn two if, and only if, you play and imprint a chrome mox on turn one (or i suppose a mox diamond/vintage mox if you're not playing T2).

clearly green got the shaft here. we should have at least gotten a 4/4 trample..or 5/5 as RE has stated. THese will defenitely be interesting to see in action. enchantment removal going to be used a bit more with this set i think.

A 4/4 on turn 3 is no reason to think green got the shaft. Ravenous Baloth was a 4/4 for 4 with no trample ,and it saw play. It is going to be a solid card for green beatdown. With Sakura-Tribe Elder and Kodama's Reach green will have no trouble getting forests to fuel the Genju.
well ravenous baloth sees play because it can sac himself (or other beasts) to gain 4 life...
and also the interaction between the baloth and contested cliffs...
(pit the baloth and another creature, voila, green spot removal...)
and about the genju, well 4/4 is nothing to scoff at...
(don't tell me you're not scared to see it on the other side of the table, and with no enchantment removal in your deck...)
Well I play MBC so I wouldn't like to see this hit the board at all. :upset: Really though, not everyone is going to be playing 4 Naturalize in their deck , and if they do it doesn't mean that they are going to have it each time you try to play it.. What will MUC do about this card? They don't have any enchantment removal. Red decks don't have any either. I think these cards are going to surprise alot of people. Remember Disenchant and all the other enchantment removal had a hard time stopping Rancor. The Genju's all come pack just like Rancor if the land goes to the graveyard, so most creature removal is going to run out sooner then later also, and with Eternal Witness you can get back what ever you need. You need the Genju because it got naturalized, Witness. How about the land that jsut got destroyed, Witness.
What? no trample? That sucks. But you can't complain about a 4/4 creature for 3 mana.
however i suppose it'd be a little overpowered for an uncommon were that true.
