I am interested in checking out an MTG sim. I tried out MTGO but considered it 10 bucks down the drain - just didn't appeal.
I have played Apprentice before but am now concerned that it looks like on the official site it has been years since a new set patch has been released. Plus, apprentice seemed pretty janky over 5 years ago - what with the basic card sprites and rudimentary matchmaking multiplayer system.
I am really looking for a smooth play experience with simple multiplayer, timely updates and a healthy playerbase.
I am aware of Cockatrice and Octgn - which is more popular? It looks like the creator of Cockatrice had to stop supporting the website. Which sims should I check out?
Magic workstation has the largest population so if you like highly competitive play you'll find it, plus a smaller sampling of casual constructed. There is a draft client called netdraft they use but good luck finding 7 other people to get together and finish a draft, build decks and play even one full game, let alone an entire swiss draft.
Octagon has the best presentation but not a big following. Never played cockatrice. MWS is basically the go to option. Even with all it's flaws and hassles it has the most support, which you can find over at magic-league.com

I will always firmly stand by the belief that Magic is a game first and a collectable second.
