Starting today (May 13th, 2009), this thread is to be the one and only, official support thread for Magic Workstation (MWS) on MTGSalvation. All questions about its use should go here. If you know the answer to a question, please answer it and help out your fellow user.
Patches may be announced here, but can have their own threads as well.
Finally, if you have a commonly asked question and answer, type it out and ask, and I'll put it in this front post in an FAQ.

Q: Do I have to pay to use MWS? A: No. Q: Is MWS free? A: Short answer, yes. Long answer, you could buy MWS to disable the wait at the startup of the program I believe, amongst some other things. I wouldn't recommend this because as far as I know, the pay version exists solely as a cash cow for its developers, with no intent on being updated. Seeing as how there are a ton of bugs which warrant a FAQ this large, I suggest you just get the free version. Q: Where do I get MWS? A:Here is the free version. Q: Woah, there's not any Magic cards in here. Where do I get them? A: You have to download the Masterbase from here. To install it, you'll need WinRar or 7-Zip. Extract both of the files to the appropriate directories, and overwrite the existing ones (By default, these should be "C:\Program Files\Magic Workstation" for Master.mwBase, and "C:\Program Files\Magic Workstation\Data" for Sets.dat). Q: Wait, its rumor season, and the new Masterbase isn't up yet... How do I get cards from MTGS during rumor season? A: You must follow these steps exactly as listed:
Download the .txt file from the Magic Software forum. The topic should read similarly to "[WWK] Complete Magic Workstation Worldwake Patch (145/145)".
Open MWS.
Go to "View -> Library Mode".
Click a card in both the top and bottom grid.
Go to "Tools -> Analyze/Add/Remove Sets".
Type the full set name in the appropriate area (for example, "Worldwake").
Type the set code into the appropriate area (for Worldwake, the set code is "WWK").
Check off "get data from text spoiler".
Click the folder icon to the right of the spoiler location line, then navigate to where you downloaded the .txt file to.
Hit next.
Hit next again.
MWS should give you a notification telling you the number of cards that were added.
Go to "File -> Save Deck/Library" then restart MWS. This part is key.
Enjoy your cards.
Q: Why does MWS show cards using the old style? A: You haven't installed the new one yet. Download the new theme from slightlymagic.net. Close MWS if it is open. Extract this in similar fashion as the Masterbase (which by default should be "C:\Program Files\Magic Workstation\Themes"). Start MWS, then go to "Tools -> Preferences -> Interface" to change the theme to NewMagic. Q: Thanks, but there's still no images for any cards... Where can I get those? A: There's two flavors of images. Cropped and full. This process isn't fully documented as far as I know, so the best I can tell you is to go here for cropped images (which will leave the MWS frames on the cards, and just the black space will be replaced with the art), and here for full images (which will replace everything, even the MWS frames). Yes, you will have to download each file one by one, but it goes faster than you think. After you download each file, extract its contents to "C:\Program Files\Magic Workstation\Pics" (by default).
Q:I have a bug, when will it be fixed? A:Never. MWS is no longer undergoing development and the actual program will never be updated. The game definitions are maintained by various people - the Magic one is maintained by the good people at slightlymagic.net. But they can only do so much - most new and exciting features of Magic (such as planeswalkers and mythic rares) will not translate well to MWS. Q:I can't connect, what's wrong? A:Check the server status here. If the server is active, the problem is probably on your end. Q: My library keeps disappearing... The only cards in it are those featured in my deck... How do I get the entire library back? A: Press "Ctrl + M". This will reload the Masterbase. Q: I followed the instructions for pictures, but they still aren't showing up... What gives? A: You have to make sure the directory looks like this, with the example card as Abyssal Persecutor: "C:\Program Files\Magic Workstation\Pics\WWK\Abyssal Persecutor.full.jpg". Q: I just downloaded the newest masterbase and installed everything, but Mythic rares appear as commons... Why? A: As stated in the startup guide, MWS is not final software. There are numerous bugs, and there doesn't appear to be any update forthcoming to fix this problem. Q: How do I draft on MWS? A: You don't with MWS, for reasons stated above. Mythic rares are rarer than regular rares, which makes drafting impossible with the introduction of mythic rarity. Q: When I draft or use Sealed Deck on MWS, I get lots of mythic rares in place of commons. Can you help me? A: Yes, don't draft or use sealed deck on MWS. It doesn't support mythic rares, so any set from Shards of Alara on won't work properly. Q: People I play on MWS are jerks... is there a way to report them? A: No. Because users are allowed to change their names on MWS whenever they want, reporting them would do no good (not to mention there is no way to report them from MWS). Q: Where does token artwork go...? A: These go in a separate folder from the sets they belong to: The folder should be named "TK". Q: I made my own image for a specific card, but it wont show up in MWS... Why? A: You have to make sure the file type is ".jpg" (note this is not ".jpeg", which matters). Also, there are two types of MWS images, full images, and cropped images. Full images must have ".full" appended to the end of the card name. Cropped images don't need this. Additionally, if you have both a cropped image of a card, and a full image of a card, the cropped image will take precedent over the full image. Q: I followed the steps to install a set with a .txt spoiler, but the cards didn't show up when I opened MWS and/or I received an error saying that cards weren't found... How do I fix this? A: If you followed the steps EXACTLY as they were listed, this shouldn't have happened. What you need to do now is remove the previously installed set, and add it again. To remove the set, you go to "Tools -> Analyze/Add/Remove Sets -> Remove Edition". Check the set off that you just installed, and select "I Agree". Add the set again, with the directions in the Startup/Installation section. Q: I get an error saying "Invalid file format." when I try to load a deck... What do I do to fix my deck file? A: Make a new deck file. Another method which has apparently worked is to reinstall MWS to the root directory. Q: Some cards are appearing as Type 2 (Standard) when they aren't... How do I change this? A: Well, first of all, you could remember what sets are T2. Second, this is only fixed with the new release of the Masterbase from slightlymagic.net. Q: My opponents are cheating when I play! How do I enforce the rules? A: You don't. MWS doesn't have rules enforcement; You're on your honor. Q: When trying to add the .txt spoiler to MWS, I get an error saying "Current grid must be master-like type". What did I do wrong? A: It may not be your fault. First, make sure you followed the directions EXACTLY as stated. Second, just try restarting MWS. When I get this error, that's what usually works for me.
Q: Is MTGSalvation going to be renamed "Don't ever start a new thread because it will be locked before you can get any help"? A: The MWS thread is the comprehensive thread for all MWS problems and/or questions. Other threads discussing MWS problems/questions will be locked per the rules. Q: My question hasn't been answered... What gives? A: None of the developers of MWS are on MTGS. The people in this thread give these answers based on trial and error. If your question hasn't been answered, it's probably because your post wasn't noticed, your question is answered by the first post in the thread, or no one knows how to solve your problem.
Can someone explain step by step the proper way to download and install updated card databases using MTG Workstation? I always struggle with the commands and what to name sets, etc. Thanks.
When I import a deck I drafted from bestiaire it doesn't read my alara reborn cards even though I downloaded the new masterbase for reborn. I think the new acronym is REB? Anybody help?
Hello, im haveing trouble getting the Reborn cards into MWS. I downloaded the set or whatever i just need to know where to install it or unzip to. I would really like to be able to use all the sets before i start learning MWS. Detailed information or a link to detailed information would be great. Thank you.
Hello, welcome to the forums. There's an MWS tech support thread; I'm merging this thread with that one. I also recommend trying their actual support forum; find it near where you downloaded MWS. I recommend it because MWS questions rarely get answered around here, unless they're rants about shufflers and infuriating opponents.
Why won't Alara reborn work for me?
I have downloaded the master base, and can see what the cards do when I click on them in the master base window, but when I add one to a deck, I can't see what the card does, and I can't play with it.
How do I fix this?
Okay, so MWS has been bugging out on me for a while.
I uninstalled it multiple times and such, and have recently tried with the new ARB masterbase they posted on their site. Anyway, when I go to set it up and everything I get a message that says DEBUG: (Insufficient memory for this operation.) and then the masterbase does not load. What do I do?
Fixed it. For future reference, if you are having this problem, instead of double clicking on the desktop icon, instead right click and hit "Run as Administrator."
well there are two ways... first is you go to play a solitary game, and when the screen that allows you to set your starting life total, choose the deck list you are playing, and choose your starting hand size (and all that jaz) shows up, you will be prompted to enter the name you wish to be called in that game.
The second method is to start a game with an opponent, and go to the menu option titled "Options" click on the "Preferences" tool, and modify your name that way.

Any of you Linux fans out there try running MWS under WINE?
I'd like to hear your stories.
I normally use MWS on my Windows box, but I'm trying to get it working on my Linux machine (Ubuntu 9.04, GNOME, Intel x86 32-bit) as a side project.
I have it working, somewhat
I got (whatever the latest version of WINE is) from Applications | Add/Remove; that part worked fine.
Then, as WINE's appDB suggested, I downloaded http://www.kegel.com/wine/winetricks
and ran the following terminal command (after I did sudo apt-get install coreutils):
sh winetricks corefonts [Make sure that the 'winetricks' section of the command is refferring to the directory where the script as actually located]
Download the MWS executable like usual, just open it with WINE.
Then do the same thing with the executable that installs the card database.
Then run Magic Workstation. (Applications/WINE/Programs/Magic Workstation/Magic Workstation)
It works pretty much like native Windows until you actually get a game started (connect to server and join works like normal)
You can still play, but it's choppy/slow. Disconnections also seem more frequent. (Even though I'm only a few feet away from the router, that may be partially blame-able on the laptop's WiFi as opposed to the Windows desktop's hardwired Internet connection. Eventually, I may get the laptop on a hardwired connection, see if that helps.)
Also, the cards and card pictures are readable, but are upside down.
Sometimes, the game's keyboard shortcuts don't work; I haven't noticed any shortcuts that are *consistent* failures
The same thing is happening to me. justoocool, if you solve this problem eventually, please post the solution here. Here's an email I sent to support@magicworkstation.com, and I still haven't heard back from them.
When I am playing against someone online, MWS Play Module will randomly just crash. No specific error message, just the standard "MWS Play Module (or whatever it's called) has stopped working" Windows popup. It usually crashes within the first five minutes of a game. It can also crash if I wait too long in a lobby.
This started happening after I got home from college and installed the MWS master base with Alara Reborn from mwsgames.com. My home computer has a router; at college I did not have one. I have talked to many people about this issue and nobody else is having this problem. Since this problem started happening, it has occured in 100% of my attempted games.
This problem has happened under all of the following conditions:
Playing against different people
Playing on 2 or 3 different servers
Playing with different decks - including ones with ARB cards and ones without
After disabling the firewall on my router
After uninstalling and reinstalling the master base
After uninstalling and reinstalling both MWS and the master base
I'm trying to compete in an online MWS tournament right now, and this bug is making it impossible to play. A swift response will be highly appreciated. Thank you for your time.

Maybe it is where you got your masterbase update from? I got mine from slightlymagic.net's forums instead of MWSgames.com I don't know, perhaps that provides some sort of difference.
Another option... I have heard that MWS's server's have been having problems. Have you guys tried direct IP connecting with an opponent to see if you have the same problem under that situation?

The Master Base is being discussed in This thread here on Salvation, you can get the link to the masterbase from Slightlymagic.net on the first page of that thread. Hope that helps?

I had problems with that master base. It refused to load any decks that had ARB cards in it when playing in solo mode or online.

I'm not sure if I'm posting this in the right place if I'm not I'm sorry and could a mod please move it to the designated area. I'm graduating Highschool this weekend and as a present for graduating I got a laptop. I have MWS installed on my desktop and I'll install it on my laptop no probleem but I'm wondering if I can transfer and of the custom card arts I have on my desktops MWS to my laptop. Ideally I'd like to just transfer all of my desktops MWS files to my laptops.
Thanks in advance.

Thanks Mr.Stuff from High~Light Studios for the Sig
on my MWS account i cant find this card its called "Lorescale Coatl" If anyone else has this problem please let me know and if possible how to fix it. And also if anyone doesnt have the problem tell me where you got your ARB patch so i may have the right one. thank you all.
And, I, for one, don't use patches. I download the masterbase as a whole. Maybe you could try that. Google ''masterbase up to Alara Reborn'' and it should give you something

Some kind of witty comment should be here.
I'm sure you can think of something by yourself.
Bollocks. I was hoping for something better than that. maybe i will head to their forums and request they make a way to remove those lines. hopefully one at a time if wanted. like if you have situations that require multiple lines because of multiple responses to different things.

The WiFi'd laptop is, logically, going to yield different results from the hardwired desktop on which I normally play MWS without incident.

Anyone know how I can fix this?
I'm trying to remove all my anti-virus and spyware during a game just now, I'll let you know if it works.
Didn't help.
This is really annoying, I can't finish a game.
Double-post merged.
Could you give me a link plz?
I had problems with that master base. It refused to load any decks that had ARB cards in it when playing in solo mode or online.
Thanks in advance.

And, I, for one, don't use patches. I download the masterbase as a whole. Maybe you could try that. Google ''masterbase up to Alara Reborn'' and it should give you something
I'm sure you can think of something by yourself.
