While I know that the Arena Subforum is relatively inactive but I’m still kind of surprised that there hasn’t been a big thread about it.
For anyone who hasn’t been in the loop Regarding MTGA...
The Good:
1. it is now possible to draft with other human beings instead of bots (called a “Premier Draft”) if you want a more realistic drafting environment. It still isn’t a perfect reproduction of paper drafting (hate-drafting isn’t a thing, for example, as you aren’t playing other players in your pod) but it feels a bit better on the whole. The rewards for a perfect tournament (net 700 gems and 6 packs) is pretty decent as well.
2. Everyone was given a token for a free draft. If you have a profile you haven’t logged into for a while, fee free to try out the draft for yourself.
The Bad:
1. The price for participation in this draft is 10,000 gold or 1,500 gems... and plain old ranked draft is gone at the moment. While I have never really been interested in standard, I used to play Standard matches in arena every day just so I could round up the 5,000 gold I need to join a draft on Saturday. Having to wait two weeks per draft seems kind of overkill for someone with no real interest in meat-and-potato standard and the going rate for using money (just over 2 drafts instead of just over 4 for $20) doesn’t seem worthwhile for me, even if $10 is still pretty good for a draft in paper magic (esp with ability to recoup costs on top of pack prizes). I think that I’m back to lurking unless the prices go down or ranked drafts return.
If drafts have always cost this much and I’m losing my mind or if the price hike preceded the introduction of premier drafts, feel free to let me know. Otherwise, what thoughts do you have regarding Premeir Drafts.
The drafts cost more, but the rewards scale so it's not so bad. If you were rare drafting or only interested in drafting it's slightly worse in terms of value, but over all it's pretty much the same.
