Anyone else playing on MTGA and tired of facing mono red/blue. Wizards banned nexus of fate because it was the only deck being played, What are peoples thoughts on banning Curious Obsession for blue and Experimental Frenzy for red deck win
This'll probably be moved to the arena forum but the short answer to all this is no.
Mono-R and Mono-U are prevalent because they'e easy to build decks in Arena. Red is entirely possible to build without even using any rares (Blue it feels like you need Tempest Djinn.) So its pretty understandable to see them, as you can get them without much grinding/money. And yeah, it can be frustrating. I got paired against monored 3 times in a row tonight, which is virtually a walkover against my Temur Reclamation deck.
Nexus got banned for two reasons.
1. The Bant Turbo-Nexus deck fell outside the meta- meaning that it was impossible to gear your deck towards facing that while remaining relevant to the rest of the meta. That's not entirely a bad thing- but this is why sideboarding exists. You'll notice the Turbo-Nexus deck's success drops considerably in Bo3, and that's because its relatively easy to shut down when you get the right cards in. In best of one, there is no dealing with it, unless you bring a deck with facing it in mind at the expense of any other deck you'd face.
2. And here's the big one- the deck was completely unfun to play against. Not the normal salty "I can't figure out a way to beat this" unfun, but the legit kind of unfun that makes you quit playing. Nobody wants to stare at a computer screen for 20 minutes while their opponent takes 100 turns in a row, while at the end of the day you're lucky if they put a single Hydroid Krasis in to put you out of your misery. Cards like Curious Obsession and Experimental Frenzy might be frustrating to deal with, but at least they're pushing the game towards a conclusion.
