Hi, just asking, I started the game, was given the 5 monocolor decks. I played 2 games and LOST both of those games, and somehow I am now Bronze 1 and playing against top 8 decks (Jeskai, Golgari etc). I asked elsewhere, but the guy gave me an arrogant reply, and said that's not how it works and it's based on the cards in your deck....um well that is what happened with ME. Now, how does a STARTER deck get on the same level as a Top 8 deck (with Teferis, dueal lands, Lyras, sets of Rekindling etc)?
Basically - it's just weird.
I know it's not a helpful answer, but the match-making system used by Arena doesn't really follow much in the way of logic.
Based on what people have said:
Your Rank has some degree of influence, the cards in your deck have a degree of influence and your overall win-rate has a degree of influence.
So a deck that has lots of rare & powerful cards can be matched against a deck which doesn't, because the owner of the "power" deck has had a loosing streak, possibly with different decks.
Though this is only the case in the free / best of 1, ladder matches. Different when you play best of 3, apparently.
You can build a pretty strong black & red deck from your starting card pool.
Usually enough to win the odd game here and there.
That's enough to keep you going for the first week or two - which should let you get some additional, 2 colour, free / starting decks.
Which, in turn, give you more cards in your pool to build decks from.
General advice from there seems to be save up all the Gold you earn: Don't buy individual packs.
Instead use the Gold to enter Drafts: These give you a higher percentage of Rare / Mythics than purely opening packs does, even if you loose all of the draft games you play.
IMO the matchmaking makes Arena virtually unplayable. The way certain decks re paired off in Bo1 means you may spend all your WCs to build a deck, only to have it stuck in like an eternal limbo of very specific matches. Which means no matter how objectively "good" your deck is, you may find it doing badly because it doesnt play well against your limbo opponents. I built an experimental frenzy mono red deck and it is fun and strong, in the paid constructed it does really well, but playing Bo1 quick play it only matches up with other mono red decks, Boros aggro decks and Arclight Phoenix decks. None of which are really great to play against with it. So I don't use it much, even though I'd like to because I just dropped a ton of WCs (long, grindy, hard work to obtain) making it.
Christ, even the Bo3 mode is nothing but mirror matches now. I cant with this game. I'm done with it. Jesus only Wizards could **** up something as simple as putting Magic Online in 2018
I find the match making in the Constructed Leagues is FAR more diverse than Best of 1 'Quick Play' or whatever its called. I'm just grinding those now, till I get the Gold I need to draft, or buy packs.
