So I got into beta, built a deck, and went to play and it says I need to pay 95 crystals to play a game?
Isn't it enough that I have to pay for my cards, now I have to pay to even play with another player?
I have no crystals and I have no coins and I refuse to put money into this product in Beta, especially if I have to pay money just to get into a lobby to play with another person.
You know you can play ladder without any payments, right? Earning 500 coins for Quick Constructed is a matter of a few games. The prices of Competitive Constructed and Quick Draft are a bit off, but there should be some pricing update coming in July, I think.

standard: BUG The Baron (it doesn't work, but I try anyway)
By playing quick drafts (which you can buy-in to for 5000 gold coins or 750 gems), you can earn gems with which you can buy-in to competitive drafts (which cost 1500 gems but offer best of 3 matches and higher gem and pack prize pools per win).
The reason why drafts have entry fees is because you also get to keep all the cards you draft with which to build new or augment existing decks for constructed afterwards.
Personally, I love the interface, am enjoying standard for the first time since INN/RTR (because it actually feels powered up and diverse despite the current bans), look forward to additional content and performance improvements, and hope they eventually add additional formats for more experienced players such as cube, 4-player commander, modern, and legacy assuming the code for those larger card pools can be properly scripted and integrated into the existing framework.
I'm absolutely loving the quick constructed aspect myself, while yes there are quite a few regular standard decks being played, there are also a subset of decks that work really well in the 1 off formart. They can take some interesting risks because there's no worry about a sideboard coming into play at any point. So you see some decks that would never been good in a best of 3 constructed, come out way ahead on a best of 1 constructed format. I hope they keep that around, it's probably the most enjoyable aspect of Arena for me.
If you hit play and go to ladder constructed it's free. The interface does an awful job displaying the free ladder but I believe they're wokring on that.
