In Greek mythology, demigod heroes were often born from the union of a god and a mortal, most notably Heracles and Theseus, sons of Zeus. Now in Theros we have Heliod, God of the Sun to play the role of Zeus, in so far as arbitration and generally being head God (or so he would have the mortals think). Then we have Kytheon Iora, a seemingly ordinary human with an extraordinary ability to render himself indestructible, born to parents thus far undisclosed. We know that Heliod has chosen multiple champions before Elspeth, at least one of which was female.
Is it conceivable that Heliod got particularly close to one of his recent former champions and sired a demigod son with her? A demigod who might possess some inherent ability as a result of this union? A boy who has since grown into a man, a champion of justice, a reliable ally, a hero ready to face any trial? Like Gideon Jura?

Every time I read a comment about "Well if this card had card draw/trample/haste/indestructible/hexproof/life gain...", I think "You're missing the point." They're armchair developer comments that fail to take into account the card's role in the greater Limited and Standard environment. No, it may not be as good as whatever card you're comparing it to. There's a reason for that. Not every burn spell is Lightning Bolt, nor does it need to be or should be.
PSA to everyone who keeps forgetting about the Reserved List:
You're on a website dedicated to talking about MtG. You're only a few keystrokes away from finding out what cards are on the Reserved List. You're also only a few keystrokes away from finding out why some cards on the Reserved List got foil printings in FtV, as Judge promos, or whatnot, as well as why that won't happen again. Stop doing this.
Creative has said they didn't want to add the gods having many children aspect in Theros and the Nyxborn are seen as children of the gods instead. This for me, along with the true nature of the gods, personally makes me believe this is not the case.
However you are not the first person to believe this and I won't get into a rage to find out that yes Heliod is Gideons dad.

“There are no weak Jews. I am descended from those who wrestle angels and kill giants. We were chosen by God. You were chosen by a pathetic little man who can't seem to grow a full mustache"
"You can tell how dumb someone is by how they use Mary Sue"
I think it's only in a figurative way. Heliod and Gideon do bear some similarities in facial resemblance, but that can be attributed to both being Theran men.
But yes, Creative has said multiple times that the Gods of Theros are too transcendent to have relations with mortals.
Hmm...what about the Nyxborn? They're basically mortal creatures but with the touch of Nyx in them. Could Gideon have been conceived by a mortal/Nyxborn relationship?
The part about Gods being too transcendent ties into a theory I have about Xenagos and the former RG God: That long ago, there was a RG God who fell in love with a mortal but couldn't be with them because of their godhood, so they forsook it and "descended" to mortal status. That union happened to be with a satyr, and many generations later that satyr's lineage gave rise to one certain reveler who would seek to attain godhood. I mean, if mortal can become god, who's to say it can't work in reverse as well?

I think Gideon is Heliod's son and I found the idea of Theros gods not having Demigod children to be lame. Like we're not asking for explicit scenes on cards. It's not going to harm anyone's delicate sensibilities in a game showing people brutally getting killed all the time to have a story say the gods have kids. We're all someone's kids. Guess what, my parents had sex guys.
It'd be great to get an explanation for Gideon's indestructibility powers, whether it be being sired by divinity, being blessed by them, or something similar.
I believe so. At least in a figurative way (he granted young Gideon the indestructible aura).
But we know ('know') Heliod was once a man named Heliud, and the similarities between their stories are very interesting.
How do we know this? I haven't read "The Purifying Fire" but I know about the Order of Heliud and I thought that this was a mystery that hadn't been explained yet. Is there more info somewhere that hints Heliud was a man who ascended to godhood? If so would you mind putting it up here? I'm not doubting you I just didn't know that was out there and am curious :B
As to the main topic of the thread I'm hoping Heliod will turn out to Gid's dad. It would explain a lot and make for a cool storyline, I think it's worth a small retcon.

Cary gets most of the hints in that one, but on re-read there are even more hints that Heliod is a newer god, althought Kruphix's Insight cements it.
Think about it. Why was Purphoros coming after Heliod with a weapon that cuts things from Nyx? Because Heliod himself was a usurper like Xenagos, who eventually settled in with the rest. It makes sense given other hints that he's a newer god (like his shrine in Nyx being hinted at being newer).
I sincerely doubt that Gideon's going to die before he gets a chance to return to Theros and bring closure to his main story arc. This is assuming he's going to die at all, given his role as one of Magic's main five faces. It's like speculating on Superman or Batman dying. But if it does happen, it should be on Theros, in his greatest moment of heroism and sacrifice.
Who knows, perhaps Gideon ends up defying Heliod himself? His barrier can protect him even from the Sun God's Spear, so if anyone could stand up to Heliod, it'd be Gids. Maybe Gids, Ajani, and Elspeth all work together to defeat Heliod and replace him with a better god. I kinda pictured Elspeth ascending to godhood before Heliod's downfall, though I also see her separating her divinity from herself and turning it into a sort of clone to serve as a protector for the people of Theros while the original joins Gatewatch and helps them fight villains such as the Phyrexians.

If Bolas does kill Gideon, that might give Heliod a reason to mobilize against Bolas or his agents on Theros.
