THE ELDER DRAGON THEORY
The reason Nicol Bolas was drawn to Alara was because they had the perfect alignment with the elder dragons who were all planeswalkers who died/lost their spark during the mending (time spiral). The only place we've seen him since then is Tarkir, another three color plane. But due to the wrong alignment he was weak (not to mention for the first time in years we see another elder dragon cough cough ugin).
Why has he been doing this? What is the intricate scheme his been weaving since the original Zendikar? He's been trying to undo the mending.
Before the mending planeswalkers were immortal and nearly omnipotent. And the elder dragons strongest among them. They were godlike. And what has been revealed that Nicol Bolas has on Amonkhet? Gods. So, he is trying to or maybe already has resurrected his fellow elder dragons, but due to the mending they have no spark. Therefore, he is going to undo the mending and cause another time spiral. Hence, the name Hour of Devastation. Once he undoes the mending, thousands of planeswalkers will be brought back to life and/or regain their spark. Including the elder dragons.
Now, you may be asking, "then what does the planar bridge have to do with this?" To understand that you have to understand the mending.
The mending is what fixed the time spiral. And what caused the time spiral was massive tears through the blind eternities to other planes. These tears were fixed by planeswalkers sacrificing their spark and/or their life to mend these tears. Why were these tears so bad? The planes on the other side of the tears were at completely different times in history than Dominaria (ex dominaria was in the 3000s and kamigawa was in the 2000). This completely rekt the space-time continuum. That's why Tezzeret wanted the planar gate so badly. It was basically a small tear through the blind eternities that could be manipulated at will.
If you really want to get deep here is the Niv-Mizzet theory.
All throughout the story of Return to Ravnica, Niv-Mizzet is trying to study planeswalkers. No one is quite sure why. Ral Zarek believes he is trying to obtain the spark so that he may have untold knowledge of all things in the multiverse. Ral Zarek is very close.
Many people believe that Niv-Mizzet was also an elder-dragon from before the mending, but was not a planeswalkers like the others were(which would explain why he survived). Niv-mizzet, being ambitious, curious, and power hungry, was jealous of the other elder dragons. Which explains why he's so obsessed with Project Lightning Bug, and is why he's constantly trying to catch planeswalkers. He doesn't want to conduct experiments on them and study them. He wants to steal their spark.

This is... quite the theory.
