Which is the funny part about it, since Niv-Mizzet did leave them. Hopefully they'll explain his return.
Niz-Mizzet left for a short while (probably to sob about being beaten by the Nephilim) but never left the plane, so it isn't improbable that he returned to power once his wounds healed. Whereas Rakdos is basically brain-dead at the end of the novel. I guess people worship anything that looks big and scary in Ravinca.
It's still not colorless, and has no color. That's a paradox. So either you're a Zen master or an idiot, I'll assume the Zen master for sake of argument. This card will have no paradoxes because it has a clear paradox. Deep stuff man.
So how did Rakdos end up brain dead? Although I'm sure he's brought back to life at some point. I'm still curious about how the planeswalkers will affect the guilds since they can now planeswalk to Ravnica. Jace I imagine would probably try and manipulate situations and I'm also sure Niv would be able to see that due to his superior intellect.
Has any part of the story ever mention planeswalkers on Ravnica prior to the formation of the original guildpact?

Rakdos was mind melded to the Blood Witch Lyzolda and ended up going toe to toe with Experiment Kraj. While he could take the damage, Lyzolda couldn't and she ended up falling.... which is not advisable around the Rakdos.
When she faltered, the rest of the guild tore her apart. And ate her.
This divided up the link to Rakdos amongst dozens if not hundreds of people and effectively spread his mind too thin to think.
Planeswalkers were very very prevalent on Ravnica before the guildpact. It's why the plane has such a huge diversity of creatures.
The Angelic Headquarters, the Parhelion, was built with remnants of technology left by the planeswalkers as well. When they stopped showing up, the angels decided they wanted a flying ship to go search for why they might have gone. Hence, the Parhelion.
I think you're overestimating the guilds. They don't have agents on the side of every street watching every single person that passes by. Ravnica likely has a population in the BILLIONS which is legitimately impressive in Dominia.
As for Nicol Bolas, I honestly don't think they can match the original design. I won't rule out his appearance, but he's pretty much as good as he's going to get.
I ship Bolas x Tezzeret. I've written... something truly horrible for all of you. MWUHAHAHAHAHA!
For the record though, Tezzeret is actually fully asexual. He hates his flesh, so naturally he has no interest in satisfying it. He also doesn't really have any need for anybody else either, so romance is out of his interests.
It's far more likely for Tezzeret x Machines or Sharuum and Bolas x Bolas.
Has boros and izzet gotten along because I just don't see how Jace and Gideon could.
Technically none of the guilds really got along. That was the point of the guildpact in the first place.
Izzet and Boros are basically neutral to each other though.
Just for the record though, I don't think either walker is going to have a personality shift as much as they're going to align themselves to whichever guild is closest to their methodology.
There's some debate about which actually fits their mannerisms best, but that's for another thread...

I am curious as to how the guilds will treat the planeswalkers that (if?) they align with a guild that they (I would think) are more powerful than their leaders. Although if Jace aligns himself with izzet I think Niv-mizzet would be on par with Jace due to his superior intelligence.

Jace isn't a fiftieth as powerful or smart as Niv Mizzet.
Likewise, Gideon is a beast on the battlefield, but invariably, I will still give it to the angel.
And besides, The Izzet already actually have a resident planeswalker as well. I mean, I'm expecting Jace to steal Ral Zarek's spotlight, but... what you gonna do?
I don't think it is in the cards (pardon the pun). None of the female charcaters nor male characters seem interested in procreating. Elspeth has made it clear she distrusts men, liliana doesn't seem to be the kind of girl who answers to a man and neither does chandra. Tamiyo is moonfolk, a race known for being elitist, and nissa is racist. Planeswalkers seem individualistic enough to not care about other walkers.
Venser was the only walker that seemed remotely possible to have a functioning relationship and well he died.

we aren't really talking about having kids, just having a romantic relationship, and we actually HAVE had that happen between characters we already have.
Some are functionally asexual of course, so that removes them and some are emotionally damaged enough that it disqualifies them as well.
Garruk and Tezzeret are functionally asexual.
Elspeth and Nissa are both damaged enough that they can't enter a relationship. Some argument could be made for Ajani to be placed here too, but he's much much better adjusted comparitively than the other two.
Koth is otherwise occupied, but he was a hot catch amongst the Vulshok before.
Sorin is a sensation junky and hedonist... so yeah. I've said it before, he's probably omnisexual and given his age, even the normally kinky stuff is probably boring to him now. He has to break out the nightmarishly kinky stuff to keep entertained.
Neowalkers, except for Bolas and possibly Karn, are not even remotely a threat for guild leaders. It's not even pure power, which these guys and gals mostly don't have enough, it's how the guilds operate. With the exception of Rakdos and Gruul, you don't get to the top by smashing peoples heads in and you don't get there without years of plotting and manipulation.
Well, in fairness, Savra topped the Golgari by smashing her way to the top. She had political maneuvering too, but it boiled down to "Super zombies Svogthos go smash."
I think the Dimir would work similarly as well, in that if you're a bad enough dude to shank the master of the guild in the back, you probably earned your spot.

Garruk's social life reminds me of Uncle Istvan from back in the day. They look similar, minus garruks helmet.
So in essence the planeswalkers we have currently are dysfunctional, ego driven, hedonistic (Nissa and Sorin), bitter individuals who (I don't blame them for this as I would too) just travel the multiverse for whatever they desire.
There are three who seem to actually care about the fate of the multiverse: 1:Venser who sacrificed himself to save 2:Karn so he in turn can help prevent phyrexians from invading other planes, and 3:Gideon who seems to me the only one worried about the eldrazi. So, out of the full list of 17 current planeswalker, that actually have been printed in card form, only three, make that 2 that actually seem to care about the multiverse surviving and maintaining balance. Is this about right? For those planeswalkers who don't have cards I cannot speak of their temperament and views.
Sure makes me feel better for the future of the multiverse in the hands of these planeswalkers.:p

Not at all, just because you're emotionally damaged doesn't mean you don't have goals, dreams, or principles. It means that you're dysfunctional within normal society, not that you don't care about it.
I'll list out where each stands as far as they rest in relation to Dominia. Jace has no real drive. He's basically the quintessential representation of the male player in that, despite having a wonderfully developed story, he doesn't actually have much of a personality. This is in part because he doesn't have a lot of drive and he's severely unsure of what to do with his life. He's stepped up a little, but he's still pretty badly cast adrift. He's smack dab in a quarter life crisis. At the end of the day, more than worrying about morals, he wants to live comfortably. He doesn't want any hardship and he doesn't really want to go looking for causes to put himself behind. Chandra has drive, but she lacks focus. She wants to improve herself and her skills, but she doesn't have the resources to really know how to do that. Aside from that, she's also been running from traumatic events in her past and up until Gideon, she was terrified of slowing down for fear that those events would catch up to her. Mostly, she was haunted by what she'd done in recklessness. So yeah, she still has some issues, but a lot of her emotional turmoil has already been resolved. Ajani suffered from a very young age of being a total pariah amongst his own people. This has given him a serious inferiority complex that makes him feel like he's a burden to the people he surrounds himself with, and while this attitude has lead him to abandon confrontations, he's still someone with a very firmly seated belief in equality and a hope for a brighter future. He's someone that works for the good of the community while feeling like he doesn't belong because he's always been treated as an outcast by everyone except his brother. At the end of the day, he cares about the fate of others, much more so than his own happiness or dreams. Garruk is completely socially dysfunctional. There's not a lot of empathy here, but there isn't much antipathy either. Mostly, he does not care. Liliana cares about herself. First and foremost, no questions asked, and she'll put anybody on the chopping block if it means she can escape the same fate. But at the same time, this isn't a case of of apathy or antipathy towards everyone else. If she has to make someone close to her suffer, she will, but that doesn't mean she lives without regrets. She nearly tore herself apart when she got close to Jace. She legitimately did not want him to be hurt, but as much as it hurt her to, she decided to betray him. Desperate situations. Elspeth has this ideal set up in her head that there is a perfect utopia out there devoid of problems where everyone is nice. The fact that Dominia isn't overflowing with this sort of paradise has driven her to extreme ends of nihilism. She doesn't think anything matters because everything is ultimately a bleak place. There was a modicum of character growth, where she came to understand that it wasn't enough to look for a place, she had to fight to make it a reality, but she's honestly still blinded by her trauma and ideals. The world is totally black and white to Elspeth's eyes. The only difference now is she is intent on fighting the black, but she's still given up on finding a place WORTH fighting for. She's... still badly messed up from her childhood. Sarkhan had his own goals that were largely unconcerned with the welfare of others. Tezzeret is messed up. Seriously seriously messed up, but at the end of the day, what he wants most out of life is to be the most clever man in the room. He wants authority, but he doesn't want to rule. He wants to be so high that no issue can touch him and he will do ANYTHING to anybody to get a position where he is unassailable. To some degree, this is the opposite of Elspeth, in that Elspeth has given up her ideal because she couldn't find a happy place while Tezzeret is blinded by his own desires to make his happy place. Bolas. He's an elder dragon who is older than entire planes and every single civilization on them. From a totally subjective standpoint and keeping in mind human morality, he's evil. At the same time, he's a dragon. You cannot apply human morality to something like him, the scale is just too small to encompass what he is. Nissa has been hobbled and she actually has a pretty tragic backstory. As a child, her spark ignited and she showed a lot of individuality. This was simply not how things were done in the Joraga. She was exiled from her tribe, her own parents turned their backs on her for being different. Finally, she found another Joraga tribe willing to take her in, so the trauma of being torn from everything she knew made her agree to basically anything to fit in. It ended up destroying a lot of her empathy because she just was so desperate to be accepted, which meant she had to shun other things that were different, the same as everyone else. Sorin has a weird sense of morality born, it seems, more out of pragmatism and antipathy towards others than out of any sense of right or wrong. He has his own view of honor because he believes himself better than those who do not hold adhere to such. This is why he's willing to sacrifice entire planes or his own brethren to maintain balance and order. Because he doesn't care about anything other than maintaining himself and his own ideals. Gideon had a troubled past, but he's since become very well adjusted. He has firm ideals rooted in the belief that if you have the capability then you have the moral responsibility to help others. It isn't enough to respect others, you have to protect those that can't protect themselves. At the same time, he's a bit more worried about doing what's right for everyone rather than just what he sees as being right according to his own beliefs. It's why he helped Chandra. Koth is in a compromised position. We've only ever seen him when it was his own plane in peril, but at the same time, he's not just about stopping the Phyrexians on Mirrodin, he wants to make sure they don't harm any other plane. I don't know how much that speaks to his character though because we've only seen him when conflict is being pressed upon him. Tamiyo and Tibalt aren't well developed. They seem to mostly only be concerned about their own studies, each in their different fields.
Not at all, just because you're emotionally damaged doesn't mean you don't have goals, dreams, or principles. It means that you're dysfunctional within normal society, not that you don't care about it.
I'll list out where each stands as far as they rest in relation to Dominia.

That is the best psychoanalysis I've ever heard about planeswalkers. Lately I've been reading up on each current planeswalkers history but that summary is not the whole picture to these characters. Unfortunately I have not had the time to read the novels (that priority belongs to Stephen Kings The Dark Tower: The Wind Through the Keyhole). This is very informative. I will review this and try to make an educated assesment on future storylines particularly with RTR coming up. Thanks again Barinellos!:D
Hey, no problem.
As it is, I could have gone much further in depth with Garruk and Sarkhan than I did, but it didn't really have relevance to their current drive and character goals. Sarkhan had an issue of fulfillment early on and that's given him a desire to find something, anything really, to believe in.... which in fairness put him in front of Bolas which hasn't served him worth a damn. Ultimately, he wanted more out of his life than what he had been given and found that the alternatives were as unsatisfying as what he had. This would have been one of those situations commonly associated with people in the real world saying they were born to the wrong era. Of course now he's kookoo for cocoa puffs so... Garruk has a lot more to be said about him, but honestly I feel like the webcomic "The Wild Son" did as good a job as I could at laying out how he came to feel about the multiverse. What needs exploration is the sense of predation that he's adopted.
Well, officially we have the Jace/Lili and Chandra/Gideon pairing, but other than that it's all fan dreams
I myself can't shake off the feeling that Elsie should be dating Ajani. Come on, look at them after that fight in the colisseum and tell me they're not a couple
Most of the rest of the cast are rather lacking in romance, though, admittedly Sarkhan probably is a caveman when it comes to that, Tezz probably will leech of a wealthy girl, Sorin has spend millenia without a girlfriend, Garruk's probably on the same boat as Sarkhan, Nissa... eh, Tibalt.... better not think about it, Tamiyo could be fun if she ever has a family, and Koth... eh.
Discussion about shipping in Magic The Gathering?! Well, I'll be damned!
There's the material, but frankly Creative right now isn't really even interested in mandating "ships" that would sail the "shipping seas". When was the last time we had an amazing couple? Only Barrin x Rayne comes to mind, they're not even planeswalkers, and we know how well that ended.
It seems that planeswalkers would just be mostly for fighting and adventures and nothing more. A functional and working couple would be nice... but no expectations there.
p.s. I ship Me x Garruk, because beh... I'm a planeswalker too technically. I'll follow him to the ends of his wild hunts. /delusion

I really want to see a couple so we can get some sweet couple cards, every now and again people realize things like "Planeswalker - Liliana Chandra" is technically a viable type line and make paired planeswalker cards, well I want to see that. I think it'd be awesome.
Actually that would be interesting and unique. They've done it with creatures i.e. Tibor and Lumia (who I want to see reprinted or a new version) so why not with planeswalkers. It doesn't have to be romantic at all it just could be two joining forces to battle a common enemy. Either way it would be neat.
Yeah, we've designed cards like that at the CCC before.
Still, a lot of people here are just saying "what's the most possible couple" when the title explicitly talks about "what would be the best couple".
That being said, I think we can all agree on Avacyn + Elesh Norn hate-snogging.
I honestly can't help but seeing those two doing so while Avacyn is saying "I wish I could quit you."
The best couple is a tough question because for a large part we aren't sure what chemistry the pairs might have. I mean, I thought Lili and Jace were a very good couple in a Mrs. Robinson kind of way.
Well the "best" couple could be personal preference or it could be the one with the highest likelihood to happen in the first place and then continue on with stability. If it's just preference though, I like LilyxChandra thanks to Mr. Steve Argyle.

When people stopped talking about it he came back and incinerated anybody that asked.
Business went on as usual after that.

Yeah, for a while, but the most that happened because of that was that he stepped on a clown.

Tamiyo and Tibalt aren't well developed. They seem to mostly only be concerned about their own studies, each in their different fields.
I myself can't shake off the feeling that Elsie should be dating Ajani. Come on, look at them after that fight in the colisseum and tell me they're not a couple
Most of the rest of the cast are rather lacking in romance, though, admittedly Sarkhan probably is a caveman when it comes to that, Tezz probably will leech of a wealthy girl, Sorin has spend millenia without a girlfriend, Garruk's probably on the same boat as Sarkhan, Nissa... eh, Tibalt.... better not think about it, Tamiyo could be fun if she ever has a family, and Koth... eh.
/delusionSerra Stan - Angel Enthusiast - Garruk and Tyvar thirsty follower - Flavor and Art Enthusiast
