When I first heard of Duskmourn, I thought: Nice, an Horror Set, where the whole plane is some kind of wicked manor... awesome. And I still think, that Duskmourn could be an amazing set... but I absolutely hate the design choices.
Is this goddamn Prince? Are those some Ghostbuster-kind of devices? For real? Futuristic Kamigawa was already hard enough, but now this?
I know, this is absolutely personal and there will be enough people who like that kind of stuff. But for me this is just ridiculous.

They have said the set takes inspiration from the "modern horror genre" with 1970/80's time period being said*, so I think thats the best way to set expectation. IMO making it 70's/80's with ghost buster/stranger things like magic-tech helps make the plane stand out from Innistrad which will be the biggest hurdle this plane is gonna face. That said I'll be happy to see some slasher movie stuff used, love them.
*We might see more modern than that since it was vague if they meant all modern horror or modern compared to Innistrad.

they said dus ours is based on “Modern horror” 1970/1980
so the horror will be in line with
“Halloween”
“Friday the 13th”
“Nightmare on elm street”
“Poltergeist”
“Chucky”
Maybe even “it”
And probably other mythical horror too since clearly the first picture shown on duskmourn is easily based on “the Mothman”
back on topic safe bet the wanderer won’t be with kaito this time despite those two being best friends to each-other since she’s finally sparkless and is able to stay at her throne. And more importnatly finally return to Yoshimura, Ever Faithful
I know what they said - but its one thing to get inspirated from "modern" horror and another to have characters wear real world clothes and let them use strange tech devices. Its so out of place in MtG... I mean there always was some weird stuff going on (Phyrexia, the Weatherlight etc). But this time they didnt even try to make it feel fantasy-like. They give a damn... They just drop random stuff in the sets. Its a shame imo.
This set will be horrible in sense of MtG flavor and we should realy be worried about that strange racing car set -.-
(again: i know there are people who love all that)
Highly agree. The best good boy in the multiverse <3

Nope, still not agreeing with that point of view. Fantasy is an extremely wide reaching genre, and I don't quite get why people are getting regularly angry about more modern technologies or modern looking clothes as "not fantasy enough". Are medieval knight armors also not fantasy enough if they look like their real world counterparts? Aren't the depictions of farmers or any kind of job that also existed/exist in real life not equally dubious when it comes to "being fantasy"? Because if so, then medieval fantasy (which is what most people think of when it comes to fantasy) would have the very same problem as the more modern, even science fiction adjacent fantasy worlds, but strangely enough people don't see it that way.
As I said when Neon Dynasty came out, what makes Magic unique is the wildly divergent forms of fantasy worlds that are part of the multiverse. The one defining trait that needs to remain constant is that magic is present and used as a resource, which has been true even for the most industrious and sci-fi worlds like Kaladesh and Kamigawa.
Phyrexians, the Thrawn, the Brother's war tech, Kaladesh, Kamigawa, even Ravnica and similar worlds are not "weird", but part of the overall variety in MtG from the start. Taking that away would leave it more generic and in danger of actually dying out in my opinion.
That said, I don't even think Duskmourn will be THAT high tech. After all, it's basically just a mansion (the outside not being explored in the set, if there is one). I do hope it is not just slasher movies that it will take inspiration from. The Thing from Another World, Alien (maybe Fomori related or translated into some form of eldritch abomination?), body horror in general is something that has become way more popular in modern horror, and I would like to see that too.

well For modern horror from, the very first picture shown in “magic presents” safe to assume one modern horror is a magic equivalent of “the mothman”

Different people have different expectations. Don't get too hung up on words. Language is imperfect at transmitting complex ideas. Saying "Hah, but it is still technically fantasy so you're obligated by law to like it, if you say you like fantasy!" is not as much of a gotcha as you think it is.
As for the "it's the defining feature of Magic", that's just flat-out wrong. In the past of Magic, certain technologies, or rather, aesthetics, were seen as out of place for Magic, by the creators themselves. Mirrodin was seen as pushing the boundary towards sci-fi too much. Capenna and Neon Kamigawa would NOT have happened in the pre-Innistrad era (I believe Innistrad was a major shift in how creative approached designing worlds, mostly for the better). Magic is only recently experimenting with more out there aesthetics (including apparently proper sci-fi in Summer 2025, "Volleyball"). To claim it is a fundamental part of Magic when it was consciously excluded for most of its history is applying modern creative sensibilities to the past.

At no point did I say that people have to like these elements because they are (though not just on a technicality) fantasy. Hell, I don't like Zendikar's boring (in my opinion) "adventure world" design for example, always felt bland and uninspired to me. But I would never say "this is out of place" or "this isn't fantasy and that's the problem", which WAS what I was responding to. Here, let me quote what I did respond to again:
"But this time they didnt even try to make it feel fantasy-like. They give a damn... They just drop random stuff in the sets. Its a shame imo.
This set will be horrible in sense of MtG flavor and we should realy be worried about that strange racing car set "
And that's what I took issue with. It absolutely implies that these elements are somehow objectively "not fantasy" enough due to their (more) modern aesthetics, and therefore don't fit into MtG. And that's simply untrue. It's a taste issue, and that's understandable, but people tend to forget that their tastes are not the same thing as objective facts. All I wanted to say was that "real life" things have always been part of fantasy and no one bats an eye unless it is some more modern stuff, then suddenly it is a problem (and not just a taste issue, which again, would be fine).
The variety of worlds or cultures presented in MtG is definitely a defining feature since pretty much the very beginning. The more modern aesthetics are a new thing, sure, and yes, the creators did feel uncomfortable with it at first, but the multiverse and the variety it brings from set to set (even when the sets were mostly happening on Dominaria they kept bringing up more variety via different continents etc.) is THE big thing in Magic the Gathering, and that's what I meant overall. And yes, I think it is a defining feature. The modern stuff just expanded on that in the end (and in my opinion that was a positive change).
All I have to say is, they better make a return to Ulgrotha, because I can't see this not encroaching into what Innistrad does, since that plane's sets have dozens of references to modern horror

I remeber seeing on Maros blog awhile go (so sorry for no source but) that the more modern horror stuff on Innistrad was very mixed, with some of those who didn't like it saying it didn't feel like it belonged on Innistrad , so I can see them deciding to just make a new plane.
That said I agree in that Duskmourn will need to carve an identify for itself (and going back the more modern tech and fashion def helps with this), but I don't think it bee too hard as mordern horror and gothic horror are very different sub-genres, even more so since we don't know how modern they are going. And we have both Zendikar and Ixalan as "exploring planes" and lord knows the number of planes that have an artifact sub-theme.

forget zimone I’m more interested in knowing if this means Ajani is there.
we know ajani has a spark from the aftermath story so kaito might have lost his spark
Ajani is there because of Modern Horizons 3. Note that he's got both eyes.
They did the same thing last time where the poster showed Markov Manor Alquist and Kaya and Thunder Junction Oko.
Wait, someone's gotta explain how Ajani regained his eye this time. (Anti-Phyrexian healing that worked too well? How much should I bet that this is going to be Wizards's official explanation?)

...cuz this is showing Ajani before he lost his eye and before he ignited his spark. Like...did you really need that pointed out with his MH3 card officially shown and this topic even being talked on in the MH3 forum?

I mean, thats is kinda by point. Ixalan has the Mesoamerican and Age of Piracy/Exploring elements while Zenidkar is more DnD adventure themed, both are exploring/adventure planes that have their own feel and identity, so I think we can two horror planes if WOTC does it well to give each their own identity.

yea it’s true ajani had his eye scarred ever since lorwyn and that was before ajani's brother was killed
I think the planeswalkers in Lorwyn are supposed to be anachronistic. Ajani sparked when his brother died and at that point he already had lost his eye. His visit to Lorwyn was after Jazal's death.

This is genuinely a good point. I don't see any reason why that shouldn't be MH3 Ajani tbh, especially since you can see Naya in the background, but the timing is plenty odd. The follow-up set is the Death Race and I've said before that I think Alara isn't too unlikely to be featured. But on the other hand I don't see WotC getting rid of Ajani's scarred eye. It has less to do with there not being an explanation but more about keeping the character's key attributes intact. I'd expect a character returned from compleation being more scarred rather than less. Thematically you want to show that the character has suffered and what Phyrexia has done to them.

"You can tell how dumb someone is by how they use Mary Sue"
that looks like zimone in the background to me. Maybe she went inside the omenpaths to try to find quintorious
is ajani part of this?
Ajani is there because of Modern Horizons 3. Note that he's got both eyes.
They did the same thing last time where the poster showed Markov Manor Alquist and Kaya and Thunder Junction Oko.
I just realized when I saw the waterfall behind him.
anyway like I said maybe zimone is trying to find quintorious
"You can tell how dumb someone is by how they use Mary Sue"
or mtg variant of Velma (ah who am I kidding Sophia, Dogged Detective already nailed that spot)
Ixalan also has "Mesoamerican plane" going for it, fr representation matters.
Wait, someone's gotta explain how Ajani regained his eye this time. (Anti-Phyrexian healing that worked too well? How much should I bet that this is going to be Wizards's official explanation?)
your right that eye thing is unknown how he got it and it was during the very beginning
and it’s all the sudden healed
...cuz this is showing Ajani before he lost his eye and before he ignited his spark. Like...did you really need that pointed out with his MH3 card officially shown and this topic even being talked on in the MH3 forum?
"You can tell how dumb someone is by how they use Mary Sue"
I mean, thats is kinda by point. Ixalan has the Mesoamerican and Age of Piracy/Exploring elements while Zenidkar is more DnD adventure themed, both are exploring/adventure planes that have their own feel and identity, so I think we can two horror planes if WOTC does it well to give each their own identity.
"You can tell how dumb someone is by how they use Mary Sue"
Either MagicCon Las Vegas is going to talk the absolute snot out of MH3 despite being months after MH3 is released or Ajani got his eye back post-March of the Machines.
Note that I'm talking about the Ajani picture in this: https://twitter.com/Zaxzom1/status/1780693409424122068
yea it’s true ajani had his eye scarred ever since lorwyn and that was before ajani's brother was killed
Anyway, very strange. I guess we'll see.
